GRID FAULT INCIDENT ON 10/05/2016

1641 hrs – GRID Fault alarm came. Unit load shoot up to 566 MW from 522 MW (as shown in DCS while
in ABB CRT, Change in MW shows from 522MW to 586 MW in one trend (CE302 XQ50) and 522MW to
384MW in other trend (CE301 XQ50) and frequency change from 50.04 to 50.05 Hz

TG Side occurrences

Frequency influence and Dead band got off.

Turbine initial pressure controller got off.

Main TG Bearing – 4/5/6 vibration high alarm came and got reset immediately.

TDBFP – B AOP – 2 to 1 change over took place in auto and Also DC EOP took auto start.

CLCW pump – B tripped while CLCW pump – C not came i/s on auto which was on LEAD selection

MOT centrifuge got trip

220V DCDB trouble alarm came

BOILER Side occurrences

Mill – A both feeders, Mill – B DE feeder and Mill – D NDE feeder tripped.

Mill – E which was standby, its barring motor tripped.

AC Scanner air fan tripped and DC scanner air fan came i/s on Auto.

Burner Seal Air fan – B tripped and BSAF – A came i/s on Auto.

PAPH – A EM – A tripped and EM – B took auto start.

OFFSITE Side Occurrences

All Raw Water pumps (RW pump – 3/4/6/7/8/9) tripped.

IAC – 1 tripped.

CT fans – 1A – 1/6, 1B – 7/8/11, 2A - 2/5/6 and 2B1 tripped.

UCR AC Condenser water pump – 1 and Chiller pump – 1 tripped

AWRPH Battery charger – 1/2 earth fault and under voltage alarm came.
Action Taken.
The Unit Load came to normal value of 522 MW just after the fault. Frequency was stable at 50.04 Hz.

Frequency influence made on and Deadband made on. Immediately Turbine initial pressure controller
mode made ON through Auto.

Informed to SWGR operator to check all the SWGR (Both LT and HT) including DCDB and UPS and to
inform us. All found OK

All tripped Mill feeder made reset and taken back i/s one after another.

RWPH both SWGR sections of Stage – I and II checked. Voltage level was Ok. All I/C bkrs status OK. Then
RW pumps (Previously running) taken i/s one after another as CW channel level was low at 89.08M.

All tripped CT fans taken i/s and Current noted. Also checked at local. OK

IAC – 1 taken i/s as instrument air pressure started falling to 5.6 Ksc.

AWRPH Both battery charger earth fault and Under voltage alarm made reset. Its Charger input/output
voltage and current noted. All found ok.

Boiler and Turbine operators informed to Check the local status of Equipments got tripped and the
equipments came into service in addition to other running equipment.

Following tripped equipments in the Unit taken back i/s after EMD clearances and found
running OK.

PAPH – A EM – A, TDBFP – B AOP – A, AC Scanner air Fan, Burner Seal Air Fan, Mill – E Barring Motor,
MOT centrifuge, UCR AC Chiller pump – 1 and Condenser water pump – 1, CLCW Pump – B.

Problems found:

CLCW pump – B dish valve jamming. Not opening on command. Manually opened.

CLCW pump – C which was standby on Lead Selection should took start on Auto on Header pressure low.
Pump – C didn’t auto start.
