Thinking about what to speak on for such a diverse group.

That
one of the reasons that I love the bible and God so much. He goes
on forever and created everything, so as long as I speak about
Him. It will apply to everyone. So then I thought, how do I
explain God? Well the answer to that was obvious, look in
John 14:9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long
time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?.

Juan 14:9
9
—¡Pero, Felipe! ¿Tanto tiempo llevo ya entre ustedes, y
todavía no me conoces? El que me ha visto a mí, ha visto al
Padre. ¿Cómo puedes decirme: “Muéstranos al Padre”?

Well Jesus said right there, in order to get to God, we got to go

through Him. I believe the same principle applies not only
spiritually but mentally. So now we have to look and see who
Jesus is/or you may even say who he was. But nobody in this
room can deny that he did exist.
Jesus from Nazareth was a real person on this earth two thousand
years ago.

Look in the 1st century, Josephus who was a Roman-Jewish

historian in his 20th book of 'Antiquities of the Jews' a totally non
religious book speaks of Jesus' and the execution of James who
was Jesus’ brother.

Tacitus a Roman historian who's work as all be accepted as fact;

wrote about the crucifixion of Jesus in the first century

Finally it may seem a bit redundant but its kind of obvious that he
existed because of religion. Think of how many religions are
surrounded or at the very least speak of Jesus. Just look at these
statues. Statues
Columbia, East Timor, Portugal, Indonesia, Poland Vietnam,
Nicaragua, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, France, Bolivia

No one else in the whole of history has had such an impact.

So its pretty obvious that Jesus was a real guy. But who was he?
Now I'm not going to the generic Liar, Lunatic or Lord. Because I
think we've all heard that. Although it is true, He had to be one of
them and lunatics don’t normally inspire billions. And Liars don’t
generally allow themselves to be tortured to death if he didn’t
think it was true. So there is only one real option. BUT that being
said. My question is who is Jesus?

Jesus is ______

I believe it is SO important how we finish that sentence. because

it will determine the rest of your life.

Is Jesus, all-powerful? Loving? Generous? Forgiving? Real?

A fake Just a man? Boring
Fun? Caring? Hateful? Dead? Alive?

PRAY

Now I could stand up here and tell you who I was taught Jesus is.
I could tell you who I think he is. I could even tell you what you
should think about who Jesus is. I can tell you who most
Christians think Jesus is. Or you know, I could maybe just let
Jesus tell you who he is
Luke 15:11-24
11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father,
give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13 “Not long after that, the
younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild
living.

14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in
need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed
pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him
anything.

17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my fathers hired servants have food to spare,
and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have
sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one
of your hired servants.’

20 So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was
filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21 “The son
said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called
your son.
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his
finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24
For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

Lucas 15:11-24

encontrado.” Así que empezaron a hacer fiesta.

To fill in that little blank, I would say Jesus is Grace

Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from
yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
Efesios 2:8-9
8Porque por gracia ustedes han sido salvados mediante la fe;

Acts 15:10-11 10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke
that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our
Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”
Hechos 15:10-11

Romans 11:6 6 And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer
be grace.
Romanos 11:6

Picture of prodigal son

Now the trouble arises not in Jesus' grace, but our lack of
understanding it. We are in a dog eat dog world where nothing is
free. In order to feel love, we must give it. in order to receive a
salary, we must work for it. In order to eat we must purchase
food. nothing is ever free and the few times that something is
'free' its really not. We have to pay it back somehow.

This is why legalism exists. its because people feel a need to work
for salvation. Because that’s the way everything we know
operates. But Jesus is so far above how we operate.

One of my favorite parts about the parable is often very

overlooked. is the relationship. Its in the name of the parable, but
we still seem to miss it! the prodigal 'Son'. The father loved his
son when he was born, as he grew up, when he started to rebel,
when he took that rebellion into action, when he was gone and
when he came back! The father always loved his son. Jesus has
always and will always love us.

I believe it is important to understand the father son relationship

behind this story that the father was here when his wife found out
she was pregnant, he loved the child in the womb, at birth he
found out it was another son and he loved him. Growing up the
father saw the son as a toddler and loved him, he saw as rebellion
started in his son. He watched that rebellion take actions, and he
still loved him. When the son took his greatest act of rebellion
and said 'screw you I'm gone' the father loving gave him his
money and let him go...it's important to understand this not only
to see gods love for his children but because children understand
gifts way better than adults.

Now kids understand the idea behind a free gift. You would
never see a four year old ask how much his birthday present was
and offer to reimburse. Or wash dishes for the next week to pay
back.
It’s the 'wise' adults that have been impacted by a sinful world
that don't get it.

After years of drilling ourselves on the right answers we know

that grace is free. and we can kind of accept that we are lost sons
that Jesus lets back into the house. But as long as we work for it.
as long as we read our bible, pray, go to church and get others to
read their bibles, pray and go to church.

Jesus saved me when I was a sinner, but now if I sin. Well, he

only died once, so I better not mess up again.

let me ask you a question about the parable. do you think that
after the huge feast and party. the next morning if the prodigal son
slept in, would the father be upset? would he disown him for not
getting up and getting to work? Of course not! but for some
reason we act that way!

Picture of Boat
We act like grace is the shove off from the shore in a boat. it gets
us off the land and into the water, but then we got to row like
maniacs to get anywhere. When in reality grace is the boat. and
without it we're in a middle of the ocean sinking like rocks.
Look at Romans 5:20 "Where sin increased, grace increased all the more"
Romanos 5:20

Now's the part where people are sort of uneasy. 'uh-oh is he

saying we can do whatever we want and Jesus still loves us?' so
people can just go commit rape and Jesus is ok with that? No.
Jesus hates sin, but he forgives it. You see, where you're sitting.
No matter where you are spiritually. It doesn’t matter if you hate
God or not. Jesus loves you, the beauty behind that, is that he
loves you TOO much to let you stay where you're at. He loves
you so much he can’t stand to see you turn down something as
amazing as his grace.

So is his grace dangerous because it allows us to sin? No, not

nearly as dangerous as amazing. Because Grace isn’t about what
we can get away with. It's about a person. Its about a relationship
with Jesus that doesn’t depend on how well I behaved today. And
when we see Jesus for how he really is, we won't abuse his gift;
We’ll embrace it, and Him.

Its almost like if someone were to give you a really nice car, say a
68 Chevy impala. Would you treat it like garbage, leave it
overnight in la cancha with the windows down? Of course not!
Now times that by infinity plus your soul. When we understand
how great of a gift grace is, we’ll never abuse it.

The beauty behind Jesus being grace is that no matter how much
we try and when we feel like we're down and out. we never are
Jesus’ grace still reaches us.
2 Timothy 1:9 For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we
deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time- to show us grace through
Christ Jesus.
2 Timoteo 1:9
comienzo del tiempo;

What?? from the beginning of time? How amazing is this Jesus.

before time was; he concocted this masterful plan to give us an
amazing gift totally free! no strings attached. just so that we can
be with him? Look at the prodigal son. did the father ever stop
loving his son? That’s the great part about unconditional love, it’s
based on God, he loves just because he does. and I don’t know
why But i know we don’t deserve it.

But look God didn’t just save us from our sin so we can keep on
sinning. look, "called us to live a holy life". But now Ben, is that a
work? I thought you were preaching on grace. NO! that’s not a
work. that’s a fact. because when you see God for who he is.
When you understand this plan that has been since before time.
And when you see Jesus for who he truly is. then I promise you
will say "Wow, I want to be like that when I grow up," and you'll
chase it with everything. You will want to be holy, because
you've seen holy and seen how great it is.

And even if you don’t understand his grace, or if you refuse it,
Jesus in all his Glory still loves you, he will seek you out.
Because the second word I’m going to fill that blank in with is
that

Jesus is a friend of sinners.

The sun
Now sin is against the very nature of God. Its impossible to have
a glass of water on the surface of the sun. It will not work. no
matter how hard you try. you will never be able to put a
swimming pool on the sun. because its against the very nature of
the sun. the same is true with God and sin. But even though we
can't have water on the sun, we can have fire on earth. Knowing
that, Jesus came, not only to cover our sin with his amazing grace,
but also to become our friend.

Look at what the Pharisees or people who hated Jesus accused

him of. they said he was a friend of sinners. When they couldn’t
find any fault in Him, they had to go to people he surrounded
himself with; sinners. which is great news for us, because we are
just that; sinners.

Seth asked last week can we honestly say "if you want to follow
God, do what I do." I know I cant say that. no, because we all
mess up and we all will mess up. Now Im not trying to excuse sin
or encourage complacency. I'm putting the emphasis on Jesus.
I'm saying, His grace covers us, now he wants to be our friend.
Look in the Bible at who he hung out with, prostitutes,
adulteresses, tax collectors, liars, cheaters. Why was he their
friend? because he approved of their lifestyle? No. because he
loved them and when they felt his love they returned it.
Luke 19:1-10
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a
chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could
not see over the crowd.

4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When
Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at
your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus
stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and
if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Lucas 19:1-10
Jesús llegó a Jericó y comenzó a cruzar la ciudad. 2 Resulta

Jesus is a true friend, he seeks us out. Has anyone here lost

something really important? a wedding ring, or a kid? Especially
for a child you stop everything and start looking like mad. That’s
the image God gives us. He’s seeking people TO save them.

Sure Zaccheaeus was curious about Jesus, but he was just chilling
in a tree. He wasn't yelling or trying to get attention. More than
likly he was hiding, because 90% of the people that were with
Jesus hated him. But Jesus still called out.

That why I almost find it humorus when people speak of finding

God. No you didn’t find Him. Jesus left Heaven on a search and
rescue mission and he found you!
Romans 5:6-8
6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely
will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person
someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were
still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romanos 5:6-8
6

Jesus came for us on a search and rescue mission when there was
nothing we could give back to him, nothing we could do, and we
often not only deny his help, but his existence.

Look again in Mark at who Jesus surrounded himself with;

Sinners.
Mark 2:16-17 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners
and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 On
hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to
call the righteous, but sinners.”
Marcos 2:16-17Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI)
16
Y yo no he venido a llamar a justos sino a pecadores.

Jesus seeks out the sick in order to heal them. Even those who
choose to be sick. Do you think that they accidently cheated
people? Or that the prostitutes that Jesus ministered to accidently
became prostitutes. No. but he loved them all the same. How
many times have you seen a drug addict on the street and thought
“well it was his choices that got him there”? Its sick, but I have.
And I’m very happy Jesus never thought that about me. Because I
choose to sin so many times yet he still desires to be my friend.

Let’s look at another story about Jesus reaching out to sinners

This is when the people brought to Jesus a woman who was in the
act of committing adultery, she was haveing sex with someone
not her husband and somebody walked in on them. He called out
for others and before you knew . The brought her all the way to
Jesus to see what he had to say. And he told them, whoever has
never sin may begin the excutuion. Then bent over and started
writing in the sand.
John 8:9-11 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only
Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman,
where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn
you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
Juan 8:9-11
9
11 —Nadie,
Señor. —Tampoco yo te condeno. Ahora vete, y no vuelvas a
pecar.

This story goes back to the grace part of Jesus, where he

completely forgives us, and then sends us on our way to become
like him. That last phrase "Go now and leave your life of sin" is
exactly the purpose of grace, to get us out and allow us to pursue
God. Jesus forgave her and he forgives you. and just as he has
commanded her, he commands you. Go now and leave your life
of sin. Jesus does not want to punish us, He wants to forgive us
and have a profound friendship with us.

Now I could really spend all day and all week on this stage filling
in the blank Jesus is _____ But I'm only hitting the ones I find
most applicable to us, Jesus is graceful, Jesus is a friend of
sinners, and Jesus is Power

Jesus is power

First please note how I filled in the blank. I said that Jesus is
power, not that he is powerful. Jesus is not filled with power that
he can then use, he is pure raw power. He is a force in and of
himself.
From the very beginning of Jesus’ life at the incarnation of God
look at how John opens up his 21 chapter book about Jesus
John 1:3-4
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was
life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
Juan 1:3-4
3
Por medio de él todas las cosas fueron creadas;

When John sat down after spending three of his years walking
alongside Jesus, he said. ‘How do I describe him?’ and this is
what he decided on. Jesus is not powerful he is power, he is force.
So much so That in order for something to exist it has to go
through Him first. If it doesn’t: then it doesn't exist. Jesus is the
force of life, life for all mankind physically and spiritually.

Look at what Jesus went around doing...

Luke 7:20-22
20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the
Coming One, or do we look for another?’” 21 And that very hour He cured many of infirmities,
afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.

22 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind
see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, thedead are raised, the poor have the gospel
preached to them.
Lucas 7:20-22
20
buenas *nuevas.

, when John’s disciples come to Jesus and are asking what’s going
on. They’re asking when is Jesus going to make his grand
entrance and show that he is king. And WHILE they are asking
Jesus is healing people. ‘That very hour’ and Jesus is like ‘I just
healed a leaper twenty minutes ago, that guy over there was blind
half an hour ago...what do you mean look for another? Go tell
John what you just saw me do.’

Jesus was healing people, bringing window’s sons back to life,

centurions daughter to health, withering trees with his words,
stopping powerful storms, catching fish by the hundreds and
feeding people by the thousands. He had plenty of power

Legion

Another quick example is Legion in Luke 8:26-39 when Jesus

lands on shore and a man with demons runs up begging for
mercy. The demons knew Jesus was coming for them. They had
no out, so in their desperate act they went to Jesus begging not to
be sent into the abyss. So Jesus asked their name and their
response? “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
Understand a legion in the roman army generally consisted of
about 5,280 soldiers. There were 10 lines of 480 soldiers plus all
the cohorts which were generally about 6 centuries of about 80
men.

A legion of roman soldiers was bad news. And these demons

adopted that name. Now the bible doesn’t say exactly how many
there were, but Jesus sent them out they possessed of 2,000 pigs.
So I would guess somewhere around there. With the flick of his
fingers they were gone.

The final example that I’m going to use about Jesus’ power is the
most extreme and this just blows me away!
Mark 16:4-7
4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As
they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they
were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was
crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and
Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”
Marcos 16:4-7
4
No
Galilea. Allí lo verán, tal como les dijo.”

After being tortured to death and put in a tomb for three days, he
gets up and walks away! Not only to continue on teaching and
healing for 40 days, but then he flies to heaven! How cool is that?
He just takes off from a mountain into heaven where he currently
is!

Understanding this power does absolutely NOTHING for you if

you don’t react to this power. Jesus is power but that means
nothing to you if Jesus means nothing to you. let me ask you this,
if Jesus is relevant in your life right now, the all powerful being
that came to earth and defeated death for us both, who forgives
you with his grace, and then befriends you. To this all powerful
God, do you think he can’t answer prayer? Do you think he can’t
save? Do you think he can’t help your marriage problems? Or
help you pay that light bill? Jesus wants to be your friend and he
wants to answer our prayers with his unending power.

But before you start thinking I’m speaking of a genie let me say
this. If you come to Jesus for greatness, you will be disappointed.
But if you come to Jesus because he is great; that’s the best thing
you can do with your life.

Now as I said before I could take any one of these words I’ve
filled in that blank with and talk about it forever. And I can fill
that blank with almost any word. Because the greatest part about
an infinite God, is he goes on forever. You can fill that blank with
almost any adjective and then spend centuries talking about each
one.

My goal today is to challenge you to think about, deep in your

heart. How would you finish that sentence? And then do your
actions line up with that?

The last word that I’m going to put in there is this…

Jesus is Love
1 John 4:19 We love because he first loved us.
He came to us in our sinful state, and saved us. He continues to
save us as we continue to sin. He desires to be our friend and the
moment we understand just how much love and grace he has I
have no doubt you'll accept his friendship. and pursue his
righteousness simply because it is right. And Love this all-
powerful awe inspiring Jesus not to get to heaven but because he
is love.
