Exhibition

the concept

If the stage is the blank slate

on which you can create, then
what is your exhibition?

E
xhibition extends beyond the
traditional notions of movement to
celebrate the fusion of dance and
other art forms. The show’s three
themes, The Written, The Visual and The
Object show how dance can be inspired by
different creative mediums, such as literature,
visual art, or the physical form. Exhibition seeks
to explore the versatility of movement and use it
to represent all aspects of these artistic mediums,
including design, aesthetics, meaning, and nar-
rative. The ebb and flow of words, the curvature
and edges of an object, the colours and depth of
a picture: these are all notions that the dancers
have considered throughout the development of
the show. The process of taking inspiration from
outside sources has resulted in the creation of new
and original works of art. It is the combination of
adding our own touch to others’ existing work, that
enables the creation of a performance synergy.

Back in November we presented our idea to
the choreographers and challenged them to
think outside the box and push their creative
boundaries. We encouraged them to be bold
and imaginative in constructing their concepts.
We could not have fathomed the diversity of
visions that they would come up with. From
translating sign language into movement,
to reenacting Picasso’s Guernica through
tap, Exhibition is a show diverse in culture,
history, and dance styles.

We are so excited to present a collection

of twenty two distinctive pieces. What you
see on stage represents the culmination of
what has been an amazing journey, from
the initial inspirations to the development
of choreography, it has been amazing to
watch our vision for Exhibition expand and
come alive.

To the choreographers, thank you for your

commitment, this show is beholden to your
imagination and artistry. To the cast, thank
you for capturing the essence of the show
so beautifully. We hope you, the audience,
enjoys Exhibition both inside and outside the
theatre, and feel as inspired by the range of
performances as we do.

part one

by Doris Tao (hip hop fusion)
Inspiration: ‘Dance’ in four styles of Chinese
calligraphy
“Calligraphy is sheer life experienced through energy in
motion that is registered as traces on silk or paper, with
time and rhythm in shifting space its main ingredients.”
- Joan Stanley Baker

This piece explores the flow of movement and energy

in dance, as inspired by the evolving styles of Chinese
calligraphy.

In the beginning was the Word,

For words await another voice.
To thine own self be true and it must follow…
The classics can console but not enough

A Language in Which to Exist

by Izzy Inkpen (contemporary/physical theatre)
Inspiration: Jean Toomer, Elizabeth Alexander
This poem is made up almost entirely of quotes from works of literature. The dance
explores how we express ourselves within these frameworks; are these words saying
what we really want to say? Can our bodies offer a new form of communication?
How has dance influenced who we are?

Guernica
by Giselle Farrer (tap)
Inspiration: Guernica, Pablo Ruiz Picasso, 1937
Picasso’s Guernica depicting the Spanish Civil War emphasises how the petty discrepancies
of tyrannous world leaders should never cost the lives of innocent people. This dance unites
the painting with dance, highlighting the importance of mutual understanding in everyday
life.

4
Partitura
by Zuzana Mihalcinova (hip hop fusion)
Inspiration: Musical notation
This piece is music, literally and figuratively. Mu-
sical notation involves many interplaying elements
that together create an intricate composition.
Each of these elements can be taken from the
sheet and enlarged into a story experienced in
everyday life. Through these narratives one can
see how intertwined music is with the human
experience.

Dismantled sanity red
Rife in its rawness
Ignored, declared weak
Like the 5 he had to wait to be seen
Obsolete before the steam run out of the engine
Murdered intuition
Wasted intellect

Wasted
by Esme Miller (contemporary)
Inspiration: Wasted, Haseeb Iqbal, 2017
My friend Tom Clifford took his own life on 10th December 2017. He was one of many
students at UCL waiting to receive psychological support. I choreographed this dance in
memory of Tom and to highlight a growing mental health crisis in UK universities who refuse
to prioritise their psychological services.

Kaleidoscope
by Jackie Wu (ballet)
Inspiration: Kaleidoscope toy
Turning a kaleidoscope reveals a marve-
lous display of colour, geometry and light.
It is the power of reflection that enables the
creation of patterns that flow seamlessly in
and out of each other. This ballet piece is
an exploration of kaleidoscopic imagery
through movement; the dancers transform
themselves to create a real life kaleido-
scope.

Want You Back

by Isabella Tjalve (tap)
Inspiration: Winter Landscape with
Danube River, Norbert Rosing
The photo is simple but powerful. The dance
is based on this idea of simplicity, by letting
the choreography breathe and by empha-
sising silences and pauses because they are
just as important as the noise.

Still Movement
by Denise Lee (lyrical jazz)
Inspiration: Sculptures, Nora Fok
Nora Fok’s wearable sculpture is inspired by
movements found in daily life; this dance
aims to reflect the geometric and cyclical
pattern of the artwork by using the human
body to move in a way that mimics the
shapes and lines of these sculptures.

“How could one person possibly live with
all of this life?”

All of this Life

by Marie Sion (acro)
Inspiration: Lay Your Head Down, Mary Lambert, 2017
The choreography draws from a spoken word poem about the richness of life. It can be
overwhelming to live in a world with so much happening that demands to be felt. The
dance is about the struggle of feeling the good and the bad, the big and the small, and
accepting the importance of feeling life fully and all at once.

10
“Cleave not to faith when faith brings blood.”

Hysteria
by Mel John (contemporary)
Inspiration: The Crucible, Arthur Miller, 1953
The Crucible was written as an allegory of the second red scare in the mid 1900s, when
people were ostracised for being believed communists. This dance depicts the hysteria and
chaos that can result from mob mentality, and the absurdity and darkness this produces.

The Power of Musicals

by Javier Sanchez Bautista (jazz)
Inspiration: Compilation of musical
theatre posters
Musical theatre is an art which immerses
us into a variety of time periods, moods
and stories. This dance is inspired by the
musicals depicted in the posters, and
aims to capture the joy and excitement
associated with broadway musicals.

Campbell’s Soup Cans
by Windie Hoefs (stomp)
Inspiration: Campbell’s Soup Cans, Andy
Warhol, 1962
Through painting soup cans on canvas in his
artwork, Andy Warhol reflects his philosophy
that “everything is beautiful but not everyone
sees it”. This stomp piece aims to depict this
idea, by incorporating daily objects to create
rhythm and dance.

13
Word of Body
by Ada Liebenau (contemporary)
Inspiration: British Sign Language
This dance displays the extent to which move-
ment can manifest language and the signing
utilises only the song lyrics. The dancers evoke
a sense of unease as their hands become alien.
Gradually they learn to utilise signing to explore
the visual representation of words and incor-
porate their entire body into the language.

14
Blue Pill or Red?
by Xue Chen (hip hop)
Inspiration: Cell phone shackles
The title of this dance comes from the fa-
mous Matrix trilogy where Neo had to choose
between the blue pill representing blissful ig-
norance of illusion, and the red pill represent-
ing freedom and the truth. This piece portrays
a similar choice in relation to our cell phone:
although it brings people far from you closer,
it also takes you away from the ones right next
to you.

we rose up from the falling waters
the fallen rain’s own sons and daughters
and none of this, none of this matters.

Waves
by Georgia Gee (contemporary)
Inspiration: Rain, Don Patterson, 2009

This piece uses the motif of water to show the transience of life. It explores the ebb
and flow of movement to reflect the movement qualities of water, as well as it’s
metaphorical ability to be a blinding but also cleansing force. The piece aims to
show people coming together and uniting in their struggles.

Little blue picks a daisy chain - gay
Little blue climbs a tree - Strong boy
Little pink climbs a tree - Tomboy
Blue is told this makes a man.
Pink is told this makes a girl.
Welcome to the world.

Pink or Blue
by Noemi Cassin (hip hop/contemporary)
Inspiration: Pink or Blue, Holly McNish, 2017
Biologically, we have a 50/50 chance of being born a girl or a boy. Yet the sec-
ond we are born, society traps us in hermetic gender stereotypes, dictating how
we should behave. This dance emphasises how meaningless these stereotypes are
and the need to disregard them.

You tell me burn yourself white it will make me happy
To call me black is one of the most beautiful incredible
compliments you could ever give me

bleached.
by Jasmine Botchey (lyrical jazz)
Inspiration: Salt, Nayyirah Waheed, 2013
This piece explores the complexity of self-love and acceptance through the gaze of
a black woman. It looks at ‘colourism’ and the idea that ‘lighter is better’ and the effects
this view has on black women. It looks into a journey of self-hatred to self-acceptance
and self-love.

18
Shoes of Expectations
by Haylee Wong (latin)
Inspiration: Latin Shoes
“Let your dreams outgrow the shoes of your
expectations”- Ryunosuke Satoro

Sometimes the expectations we feel subjected to

can weigh us down. This piece is about breaking
free of those thoughts, believing in yourself to ex-
ceed expectations and to achieve your greatest
ambitions.

“This is our honour, this is our pride.”

SHAAN
by Sukhveer Bhamra & Simranpal Dhanoa (bhangra)
Inspiration: Folk saying

pride in our dance, and our culture.

by Adie Thomas & Li Ann Chew
There is joy in blending families, (tap & ballet)
Inspiration: Blended Families, Scott
but sometimes tears, too. Edward Anderson, 2017
You don’t deny the one for
the other, you are more Bringing together families can be a bitter-
sweet process. There is cause for celebration,
together, yet equal apart. but tensions may rise as each family learns
You are “and” rather than “or.” to become part of the other. This dance

This Girl Can

by Emma Grace Lee (street)
Inspiration: Collection of This Girl Can
campaign posters
Far too often, we girls are taught to sit still and
look pretty, so we steer clear of anything that
makes us break a sweat. This piece aims to
inspire freedom and confidence, and empow-
er girls to overcome all self-doubt; after all,
every girl can.
