1.Schema – Introduce the book “Shark Lady,” and ask Think, Pair, Share 5 minutes
students to think about what they know about sharks, if
they have ever seen a shark, or a movie about sharks,
where sharks live in the wild, and some words they
would use to describe sharks. Students will then turn
and talk with a partner and then partners will share out
with the whole group.

2. Introduce vocabulary words on the word wall. Match Whole Group Instruction & TPS 5 minutes
words with their definitions and briefly explain each
word. Introduce the word “challenge” last. After
explaining the definition give some examples of
challenges that they can relate to and have students
think, pair, share about challenges they have
experienced.

3. Go over the 6 big questions. Who, what, when, where, Whole group Instruction 5 minutes
why and how (write these on the whiteboard one below
the other and have students write them in their
notebooks). Explain to students that during the story you
want them to pay attention so that they can answer
these types of questions about who is in the story, what
they do etc. On the whiteboard, next to “who,” write,
“who is this story about?” and tell them that will be the
first question they have to answer.

4. Read aloud “Shark Lady” stopping at pre-marked Whole group while reading, 10
pages with questions for discussion. Pay special Partners when discussing minutes
attention to questions about the challenges Eugenie questions
faces and how she reacts to them.

5. As a class come up with multiple questions for each Whole Group Activity 5 minutes
starting word on the board to answer about the story.

6. Independently, students will choose one question to


answer from each category. In their notebooks students Independent 10
will write down the question they chose and then the minutes
answer. Students will also answer the prompt “Explain
one challenge Eugenie faces in the story and how she
responded” for a total of 7 answers.
Differentiation for ELL & SPED students can work in
partners with fluent speakers to come up with answers.
GT Enrichment: Students can come up with more
questions about the story that use other starting words
not listed on the boar

Closure : specific activity to review content


Students will complete their four square dictionary entries with the vocabulary words and write an exit
ticket about “One thing I learned today”
