Course Description This course will introduce specific concepts that are
integral to effective public speaking and presentations. By
learning appropriate preparation techniques, students will
learn to overcome their apprehensions towards speaking in
public and thus become more confident and effective
speakers/presenters.

Aims To ease students’ anxieties about using English as a mode

of oral communication.

To develop an understanding that communication is a

two-way process in which the listener evaluates the
effectiveness of the speaker.

To improve skills in listening, organizing, adapting to

audiences, and orally presenting messages.

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be

able to:

• define the concepts of ‘listener/audience needs’;

• speak extemporaneously using effective voice,
language and body language;
• locate appropriate materials (e.g. library, internet,
newspaper, journal, periodical, non-print media,

1
interviews) in order to prepare for public-speaking
occasions;
• organize ideas, opinions, facts, data requests into an
effective message that will produce the anticipated
response from the listeners;
• prepare and present a variety of presentation types e.g.
information, persuasion, etc
• integrate audio-visual aids to enhance the presentation;
• evaluate the effectiveness of peers’ speeches and
presentations;
• distinguish between effective and non-effective
speeches by implementing criteria of effectiveness.

An integral component of the course is that students will:

• give weekly/bi-weekly presentations (dependant of

class size) in which they will be evaluated by their
peers and subsequently to review, revamp and represent
their improved speech;
• have at least 2 speeches videotaped through which they
will have the opportunity to review and identify key
areas for improvement. Students’ original and
reworked presentations will be reviewed by their peer.
This process is a crucial element of the course, as
self-awareness is a powerful learning tool.

Indicative Content Topics will range from personal experiences to local and
international social & political issues. Computers and IT
will be used in the course where appropriate to facilitate
learning, however, the emphasis of this course is based on
speaking, not technology. (Ex. PowerPoint)

Teaching Method Classroom material is presented in the form of lectures,

group and pair work as well as practical activities and
exercises through which students will learn to understand
the fundamentals of public speaking & presentations.

call upon their real life experiences.
