MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

‘We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.’ Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.

My best wishes to all.

Dr. A. Sengupta

Louis de Broglie (1892-1987)

Louis de Broglie (In full:Louis-Victor-Pierre-Raymond, 7th duc de Broglie)
was an eminent French physicist. He gained worldwide acclaim for his
groundbreaking work on quantum theory. In his 1924 thesis, he discovered
the wave nature of electrons and suggested that all matter have wave
properties. He won the 1929 Nobel Prize for Physics.

Early Life and Education:

Born in Dieppe, France on 15 August in 1892, Louis de Broglie grew up in a
rich, aristocratic family. He chose to study history after passing his school-
leaving certificate in 1909 and he obtained a degree in history in 1910.

Broglie soon gained an interest in science and acquired a degree in physics in

1913. During the World War I, he was enlisted in the French Army. He was
posted in the Eiffel Tower, where he had plenty of time to carry out
experiments in radio communications and engineering. After the war, Broglie
started working with his brother, Maurice, in his lab.

Contributions and Achievements:

Most of the work in Maurice’s lab involved X-rays, which made Louis think
about the dual nature of light; more particularly the wave–particle duality.
Broglie soon suggested in his thesis for a doctorate degree that matter,
also, might behave in a similar manner. His thesis, “Recherches sur la théorie
des quanta” (Research on the Theory of the Quanta), centered on his
revolutionary theory of electron waves. When the French Academy became
aware of his theory of electron waves, it caught Albert Einstein’s attention,

3

who had high praise for Broglie’s bold ideas. That inspired the birth of wave
mechanics.

Broglie’s theory resolved and offered an explanation to a question that was

brought up by calculations of the motion of electrons within the atom. It was
later independently proved in 1927 by G.P. Thomson and Clinton Davisson and
Lester Germer that matter actually could show wave-like characteristics.
Louis de Broglie won the 1929 Nobel Prize in Physics for his amazing work.

Broglie stayed at the Sorbonne after earning his doctorate, being appointed
a professor of theoretical physics at the newly-established Henri Poincaré
Institute in 1928, where he remained until his retirement in 1962.

Later Life and Death:

Louis de Broglie acted as an adviser to the French Atomic Energy
Commissariat after 1945. He won the Kalinga Prize by UNESCO in 1952, and
became a foreign member of the British Royal Society, as well as the French
Academy of Sciences.

Broglie died on March 19, 1987 in Louveciennes, France. He was 94 years old.

NEWS UPDATE
 How common is food insecurity among older adults?:(8th March ,
2018)

Food insecurity occurs when people lack access to food or go hungry due to
poverty or other challenges. It remains a serious problem for many older adults.
Recently, a research team from the Institute for Health Research, Kaiser
Permanente, Colorado, designed a study to learn more about food insecurity and
older adults. Their study was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics
Society.

 Uncovering the genetics of skeletal muscle growth and

regeneration:(8th March , 2018)

4
09-03-2018

To investigate the mechanism behind skeletal muscle growth and regeneration,

researchers bombarded zebrafish with chemical mutagen and screened for larvae
with defective skeletal muscle structure. Using genetic mapping, they found that
zebrafish larvae with a mutation in DDX27 showed reduced muscle growth and
impaired regeneration.

 Researchers call for large-scale scientific investigation into fake

news:(8th March , 2018)

The indictment of 13 Russians in the operation of a "troll farm" that spread false
information related to the 2016 U.S. presidential election has renewed the
spotlight on the power of "fake news" to influence public opinion. Now, a
professor who studies the spread of misinformation online is joining prominent
legal scholars, social scientists and researchers in a global "call to action" in the
fight against it.

 MicroRNA predicts and protects against severe lung disease in

extremely premature infants:(8th March , 2018)

Researchers report discovery of a strong predictive biomarker for

bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and they show a role for the biomarker in the
pathogenesis of this neonatal lung disease. These results open the path to possible
future therapies to prevent or lessen BPD, which is marked by inflammation and
impaired lung development, and mortality or morbidity.

 No progress seen in reducing antibiotics among outpatients:(8th

March , 2018)

Despite public health campaigns aimed at reducing unnecessary prescriptions for

antibiotics, the drugs continue to be prescribed at startlingly high rates in
outpatient settings, according to a new study. The researchers found that 98
million outpatient antibiotic prescriptions were filled by 39 million people from
2013 to 2015. Moreover, the researchers found no decline in the overall antibiotic
prescription rate during that time.

 Inherited mutation leads to overproduction of erythropoietin in

blood:(8th March , 2018)

5
09-03-2018

A newly-discovered hereditary mutation is responsible for an increased production

of erythropoietin (EPO) in the blood. This mutation causes a messenger RNA
(mRNA) that is not normally involved in the formation of proteins to be
reprogrammed so that it produces EPO, thus abnormally increasing the number of
red blood cells.

 Cueing newly learned information in sleep improves memory, and

here's how:(8th March , 2018)

Scientists have long known that sleep is important to the formation and retention of
new memories. Memory consolidation is associated with sudden bursts of oscillatory
brain activity, called sleep spindles, which can be visualized and measured on an
electroencephalogram (EEG). Now researchers have found that sleep spindles also
play a role in strengthening new memories when newly learned information is played
back to a person during sleep.

 Scientists discover a key function of ALS-linked protein:(8th

March , 2018)

The protein FUS, whose mutation or disruption causes many cases of amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), works as a central
component of one of the most important regulatory systems in cells, according to a
new study.

 Exposure to childhood violence linked to psychiatric disorders:(8th

March , 2018)

Investing in diminishing socioeconomic status inequalities and in preventing violent

events during childhood may improve the mental health of youths from low
socioeconomic status backgrounds. The results showed that having experienced any
traumatic event and low socioeconomic status were associated with an internalizing
disorder such as depression and anxiety and an externalizing disorder including attention-
deficit hyperactivity.

KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE

Pharmacovigilance- The need of the hour

In the 1960s, several children were born with Phocomelia because their

mothers used the drug Thalidomide while pregnant. This large scale tragedy

lead to a worldwide crisis and the immediate establishment of a regulatory

body that monitored adverse drug reactions(ADRs) became a necessity. In

1968, WHO established a pharmacovigilance system and the Uppsala

Monitoring Centre in Sweden was made the international collaborating body.

WHO defines Pharmacovigilance as the “science and activities relating to

the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects

or any other possible drug related problems”. The Government of India in

collaboration with the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ghaziabad,

has initiated a nationwide program the Pharmacovigilance Program of India

(PvPI) in 2010. Across the country PvPI holds 150 functional ADR monitoring

centers (AMCs). The National Pharmacovigilance system is the main way to

collect information about ADR occurrences in both hospital and community

settings.

Pre-marketing clinical studies prove disadvantageous as these are limited to

a smaller number of individuals using the drug. Post-marketing evaluation has

become increasingly important to ensure proper use of a drug and to

understand the safety and efficacy of the drug on a larger population. This

is achieved by Pharmacovigilance.

7
09-03-2018

Healthcare workers are expected to report back to pharmaceutical

companies regarding ADRs and this data is recorded on a database.

Regulatory agencies then compile this data and they publish it in newsletters

and drug alerts. This leads to widespread awareness and warnings are issued

before prescribing a particular drug showing a large number of ADRs. The

drug may even be withdrawn from the market. Changes in the label are also

made so as to make the patient aware of the risks associated with the

consumption of that particular drug.

All in all, the monitoring of adverse reactions caused by each and every drug

available today has become a necessity. We, as pharmacists, are the only

ones who can evaluate and disseminate this data responsibly. So

pharmacovigilance is our responsibility and we must step up and be constantly

up to date with the effects shown by a drug we have produced.
