EE661-Power System Analysis -2016

Integrated Assignment

Aim: to apply load flow and fault calculation knowledge to analyse and control a real power system.

Objective: 1. to model a power system for load flow and fault calculations using a commercial
software

2. perform load flow calculations and fault analysis under different system configurations

3. propose and verify suitable dispatch under various conditions.

Data: Figure 1 shows single line diagram of a simplified version of a real power system. Table 1 gives
basic information about busses. This power system is a 220 kV ring network with 7 busses. Three
radial lines are connected to the ring at Bus 1,6 and 7. This network is fed by: (a) two hydro power
plants connected at bus 1 and Bus 1_1, (b) two thermal power plants connected at bus 7 and Bus
6_1, (c) three coal plants connected at bus 3. In addition to that ring is supplied by another hydro
complex (via 132 kV) at bus 2 and 7_1. As shown in Fig. 1 this infeed is modelled as two generators.
Detail about loads at a particular time instant is given in Table 1.

Table 2, 3 and 4 gives line, generator and transformer data respectively. In case of line data, given
values are for an only one circuit. All the pu values are based on 100 MVA. P_Gen values given in
generator data is corresponds to loading condition specified in Table 1. Hydro 1 is taken as slack
bus. You may assume reasonable values for any missing parameters.

Task:

1. Model the given power system in PSS/E.

2. Run load flow for the loading condition given in Table 1 with generation specified in Table 3. Estimate
total power losses for that case.
3. Assuming reasonable prices for different generation options, suggest a more economical generation
alternative for this loading condition.
4. Discuss effect of followings on operation of this power system (load flow and cost of generation,
losses).
a. No hydro power during dry season
b. Coal plants are switched off
c. Both the circuits of the Line from Bus 1 and 7 is tripped due to a lightning strike.
d. Both the circuits of the Line from Bus 2 and 3 is tripped due to flashover of polluted
insulators.
5. At night peak, total demand may increase up to 2300 MW. With the help of load flow, propose a
suitable dispatch schedule.
6. If coal plant is not available, propose and verify a method to run the system at night peak.
7. If another coal plant of same size (3x275 MW) to be installed, propose most suitable place.
8. Calculate and discuss changes of fault levels due to the new coal power plant.

Final Presentation:

Each student should present the outcome of the assignment by means of a 10 minute power point
presentation. This presentation is the evaluation method of the assignment.
