Lesson  Plan  I  –  Receptive  Skills  Lesson  Plan  Format  


 
Level  of  Students:  Intermediate,  B-­‐1   Length  of  Class:  60  minutes  
Lesson  Objective:  Students  identify  main  ideas  and  details  from  recorded  interview  to  practice  listening  comprehension  and  strengthen  subskills.    
Materials  needed:  CD  player,  CD  from  Great  Ideas  (L.  Jones  and  V.  Kimbrough,  Cambridge  University  Press),  class  set  of  worksheet,  photo  of  a  
survey  taker  with  clipboard.

To  create   T>S   Discussion  about  surveys.  Show  photo  of  a  survey  taker  with  clipboard.  "What  is  a  survey?  Have  you  ever  
interest  and   S>T   participated  in  a  survey  or  interview?  What  kinds  of  questions  were  you  asked?  If  you  interviewed  someone,  
prepare     what  questions  did  you  ask?"  Elicit  questions  from  as  many  students  as  possible.  Note  target  questions  on  board.

To  pre-­‐teach   T>S   Review  the  questions:  What’s  your  name?  What  do  you  do  for  a  living?  What  do  you  want  to  be  doing  in  5  years?  
question   S>T   Who  do  you  admire  most?  Meaning,  phonology,  and  form.  Note  the  word  order.  Use  timeline  for  “want  to  be  
forms  before     doing  in  5  years.”

To  listen  for   T>S   1)  T  sets  Listening  Task  with  gist  questions:  "How  many  people  are  interviewed?  How  many  questions  are  asked?"

gist   S>T   3)  Ss  answer  gist  questions  on  handout;  they  verify  answers  with  a  partner.  
    4)  T  confirms  the  correct  answer.

To  listen  for   T>S   1)  T  tells  Ss  to  complete  the  chart  on  worksheet  with  info  they  hear  on  CD.  T  demos  and  asks  questions  to  verify  
details     S>S   understanding  
  S>T   2)  T  plays  CD.  During  second  listening,  Ss  complete  charts.  Ss  verify  answers  with  partner.  
    4)  T  uses  a  3rd  listening  to  resolve  disputed  items  and  reintegrate  material.
