Script

Allison: Today we will be discussing the hebrew traditions and how they reflected on

the moral traditions of the Western Civilizations with my partner, Galit.

Galit: The parts that we will talk about that are in the Western Civilizations are the

Americas and Europe.

Allison: So does that include Canada?

Galit: Yes it sure does Allison.

Allison:Accounting for more than three-fourths of the world’s Jewish population, Israel

and the United States represent the two major Jewish population regions.

Galit: To the American Puritans, England was Egypt, there king was Pharaoh, the

Atlantic ocean was the Red Sea, and the Indians were the Canaanites.

Allison: What are the American Puritans?

Galit: Great question Allison! They are a member of a group of protestants that arose in

the 16th century within the Church of England. Thanks for asking and you could always

ask more questions!

Allison: Also, the Europeans had a day that had Jewish activities and was related to

the Jewish Culture. Many countries in Europe celebrated this day. This day was

celebrated on September 3.
Galit: This might seem a little bit weird but Jesus and the first leaders of the first

Christian Church were all Jewish.

Allison: The people back in England, strongly identified with both the historical

traditions and ethical customs of the Hebrews of the Old Testament.

Galit: Not surprisingly, many principles and teachings that are important in Judaism are

also important in Christianity. These common ideas are known as the Judeo-Christian

tradition.

Allison: Although Jews comprise less than three percent of the American population,

Jews have generally had a disproportionately larger representation in American

government, business, academics, and entertainment.

Galit: Thanksgiving was first celebrated in 1621, a year after the Mayflower

landed—was initially conceived as a day parallel to the Jewish Day of Atonement, Yom

Kippur.

Allison: The Hebrew Bible and Christian bible had a lot of similarities but there were still

differences between both of them.

Galit: You may have not known this but the ten commandments have had a big role in

other religions not just Judaism.

Allison: Not all Jews consider Israel being their homeland. Some consider the United

States their homeland, with 5.4 million Jews living.

Galit: The New Haven legislators had a legal code that contained 79 laws which a lot of

them came from Hebrew traditions.

Allison: The first illustrations of the United States Seal was designed with the Jews

crossing the red sea.

Galit: As a result the moral and ethical ideas developed by Judaism helped shape

Western ideas about law, morality, and social justice.

All: Thank you for wathcing!
