In 1830, a man by the name of John Forster , later known as Don Juan (really), left Liverpool
England’s wretched weather for a better life in Mexico. He eventually made his way overland to
Los Angeles, California in 1833 and courted / married Ysidora Picoin in 1837, the sister of the
soon to be Mexican governor of California, Pio Pico. Don Juan—because of his familial
“connections” to the governor, the Mexican government appointed him captain of the port of San
Pedro in March 1843 and as the brother-in-law of the Governor Pico, he was granted Rancho
Trabuco and Rancho Mission Viejo (both in present day Orange County) and Rancho de la
Nacion (located in present day San Diego County). Rancho Trabuco was a 22,184 acre Mexican
land grant that extended along Trabuco Creek and Trabuco Canyon and included the subject
property and present day Coto de Caza. All in all, Don Juan ruled over a 212,000 acre empire.
Today Trabuco Canyon is still known and appreciated for its natural beauty and incredible sense
of place. Outdoor nature enthusiast flock to the area to hike, ride mountain bikes and drive Live
Oak Canyon road where in some places, Oak trees are so thick they create a canopy, envelop-
ing the road below. The Oaks Steak House is one of the best known steak houses in Orange
County and was a favorite of President Nixon’s.
