19 such partner universities in 8 EU member states, all of which are academic leaders in the delivery of
technical and I&E education at Masters level.

Summer Schools
A key component in students’ innovation and entrepreneurship education is compulsory attendance at a two-
week long summer school during the interval between the two academic years. The summer schools are also
open to external participants, including professionals from our industrial partners.
This summer, ten summer schools will be held at locations throughout Europe, during which students
immerse themselves in real business case studies originating from EIT Digital’s accelerators, startups and
network of industrial partners.
The summer schools are linked to the EIT Digital Action Lines, themed around the five areas were we see
major societal and industrial challenges and that are also opportunities for Europe to take a leadership
position in the global digital economy: Digital Industry, Digital Cities, Digital Wellbeing, Digital Infrastructure,
and Digital Finance.

Predictive analytics, big data,
mobility and open platforms for an
efficient and participative city
Rennes, July 1 – July 14

The Digital Cities Action Line leverages digital transformation through centralised, participative and
collaborative interactions between city actors: government, city service providers, industry, and citizens. This
transformation enables the deployment of disruptive information, mobility and safety services in the cities.
Moreover, citizens are also active actors of the digital transformation of cities. Their empowerment through
ideas and participation in local life helps create new programs and tools which can be helpful to the whole
community. Digital transformation in cities is truly driven by the collaboration between the different actors:
governments, citizens, companies and entrepreneurs. A multidisciplinary approach including service design,
urbanism, and social sciences is used to provide an accurate understanding of the concrete problems that
cities are facing, and the means to overcome these, in particular by developing sustainable business models.

Predictive analytics have a large role in the digital transformation of cities. Within cities, predictive analytics
play a role in many different domains such a citizen participation, city resilience, prevention of pollution,
managing risks, public transportation and private mobility, telecommunication infrastructure, security, urban
logistics, social WiFi, tourism, traffic management, etc. Predictive analytics are one way to shape data into
meaningful decisions. It uses data analytics to make predictions and generate strategic, operational assets.
Public authorities and private companies can benefit from these insights and provide better services to
citizens. The Summer School program will focus on the opportunities which data analytics can create for
cities, citizens, and entrepreneurs in a wide range of user applications.

The Summer School will take place in Rennes. It is a vibrant city and a world-class technological hotspot in
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Located in the western part of France (Brittany), the city
is a major education and high-tech R&D centre of global renown. The Summer School will be hosted by the
University Rennes 1 in the same building as the EIT Digital Satellite CLC. This building is equipped with the
latest educational technologies. We will also have the opportunity to visit the coast in the context of a social
event activity, in particular Saint Malo and the Mont Saint Michel, a beautiful historical city close to the
beach.

Integrating personalized
mobility solutions for Digital
Cities
Tallinn, July 22 – Aug 4

Mobility, information and safety are the anchor points for innovations driven by the Action Line Digital Cities.
A multidisciplinary approach including service design, urbanism, and social sciences is used to provide an
accurate understanding of the problems cities are facing, and the means to overcome these, in particular by
developing sustainable business models.
The demographic, geographical and financial limitations to deploy efficient and cost effective public transport
will drive the emergence of solutions for a clean, quiet, stress-free and cost effective mobility. Mobility as a
service integrates public, private, peer-to-peer, conventional, decarbonized, or autonomous transport means
seamless door-to-door mobility services. It will benefit from the increasing openness of citizens to participate
in a sharing economy and recent developments in autonomous transport.
Most current digital public services are local and by large, most of them are developed in isolation from
neighbouring governments, either local, national or international. Independently developed digital services
tend to be locked into specific standards, making future cross-border services improbable.
The cities of Helsinki and Tallinn are working together with Tallinn
University of Technology, Forum Virium Helsinki, Aalto University
on developing smart city concepts within the FinEst (Finland-
Estonia) project. This project will focus on designing truly
ubiquitous urban services and effectively testing them on cities all
around Europe and also globally. The summer school will explore
several applications for seamless mobility using public open
dataconcepts.
The summer school will be organised by Tallinn University of Technology.

IoT Platforms for Industry

4.0
Munich, July 1 – July 14

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical devices with embedded software, sensors, actuators, and
network connectivity. This technology enables novel use cases where companies can sense or control physical
objects remotely across existing network infrastructure. The expected improvements are increased efficiency
and accuracy of current solutions and the generation of both economic and societal benefits. According to
market estimations, there will be more than 1 trillion IoT devices by 2025, creating a market of 4 trillion EUR.
IoT devices and applications will spread into nearly all domains of our lives, from smart homes and connected
vehicles to infrastructure and logistics as well as into healthcare. Further, the technology is one of the pillars
of Industry 4.0, which strives for self-organizing smart factories that are capable of (mass-) producing highly
customized products. Besides the integration of IoT devices into existing production lines and products, one
of the major challenges is to identify valuable use cases and sustainable business models within the field of
IoT. The exploration of concrete and tangible use cases could demonstrate how companies can connect their
products, manufacturing processes, and product development to obtain more customer-centric products and
services.
During this summer school, students will understand the foundations of the Internet of Things and Industry
4.0. They will learn how companies make use of IoT platforms for enhanced value creation in the fields of
product design, manufacturing, and customer integration. Further, the companies offer insights into state-of-
the-art challenges when implementing IoT technology. The students gain hands-on experience in prototyping
with IoT technology and will be able to evaluate the economic benefits of IoT applications and their
opportunities for new business models. In the summer school, the students will learn how to apply state of
the art techniques for concept development (Design Thinking and Lean Service Design) to come up with
innovative solutions and pitch their ideas. Furthermore, they will be able to develop and evaluate business
models, perform an ecosystem analysis, and calculate a business case for real cases of our industry partners.

Longer Independent Living

Business opportunities and implications
of primary prevention

Lisbon, July 1 – July 14

The increase of life expectancy worldwide brings to society new challenges related to older age. Funding
healthcare for the older has become a major concern. Public budgets in the healthcare systems are under
unprecedented pressure to maintain quality of care to an aged society. Policy makers need to prioritise
elderly assistance among a long list of areas from psychological and neurological diseases to conditions of
frailty and loneliness if they wish to promote a comfortable living through later stages of life. ICT-based
solutions are sought that reduce the demand for expensive healthcare by detecting still relatively small
(mental & physical) problems early and avoiding larger health events by suitable lifestyle interventions.
In the summer school the Longer Independent Living theme will be introduced through interactive lectures
and workshops on topics in the health value chain like the variety of stakeholder involved to deliver services
that support independent living (at home and in urban areas). The lectures are designed to guide students to
understand and critically debate the full implications of this topic, as well as its idiosyncrasies that make
assisted living challenging but at the same promising.
Through the two weeks you will work in teams of 5 to 6 students on applied startup projects. Startup
ventures like Kinetikos and projects from the research centres like Fraunhofer Portugal and Champalimaud
Foundation, will bring us the state of the art of the Digital Assisted living. Your task is to develop a compelling
value proposition for investors for the cases assigned, by building a sound and realistic marketing strategy &
business plan.
During the weekend we will pay a visit to the emblematic beaches of Portugal where you will experience
several sports (surfing, kiting, sailing, scuba diving) amongst other outdoor activities.

Healthy Lifestyle and
Behavioural Change
Business opportunities and
societal challenges
Eindhoven, August 5 – August 18
The ageing population, increasing healthcare costs, fast moving society and growing consumer empowerment
causes large societal challenges but also creates business opportunities. This demands for new, innovative
and entrepreneurial approaches to health and wellbeing. The action line Digital Wellbeing focuses on ICT-
based solutions that enable good physical and mental wellbeing for citizens in private life as well at work
while reducing the demand for expensive healthcare. Prevention is key in this approach and some ICT-based
solutions enable already today the detection of mental & physical problems in a very early stage, enable
behavioral change through lifestyle interventions and will avoid larger health problems.
During the two weeks, wellbeing topics will be introduced through lectures and workshops on life style and
wellbeing trends, latest privacy legislation, new business models and on digital solutions to assess, measure
(“quantified self”), change behavior and promote a healthy lifestyle. You will explore the topics that form a
hazard for our health and wellbeing at home, at work and in cities, and what it will take to reverse these
trends. You will also learn on the usability and social aspects that have impact on a healthy lifestyle. You will
work in small teams on cases provided by start-ups, scale-ups and/or large companies like Philips.
Under the guidance of experienced business tutors and coaches you will act like a start-up needing finance,
developing a value-and product proposition, marketing strategy and a business plan. Business development,
teambuilding techniques and pitch crafting will enable to develop your personal skills and to build and sell
your business case in a competitive final in front of a professional jury. So this summer you could come up
with a great solution for an urgent wellbeing problem never thought of by the case owners or jury.
The summer school will take place at the CLC at the Eindhoven High Tech Campus. Accommodation will be
provided in a nearby hotel in Eindhoven, on a short but “healthy” biking distance from the city centre and the
High Tech Campus. During the weekend, we will offer an attractive program in one of the major Dutch cities,
where we will discover the culture and participate in several activities.

Internet of Things and Business

Transformation
Stockholm, July 29 - Aug 11

The topic of the summer school is internet of things (IoT), as a main driver for future digital infrastructures.
With the advances of ICT, milliards of “things” will learn and collaborate through a reliable, efficient and
secure network, using distributed storage and computing resources. Therefore, one of the key challenges at
an infrastructure level is the better integration of IoT in the current networking and computational solutions.
The vision of IoT requires new technical solutions in three large technology areas, such as embedded systems,
for energy efficient sensing and actuation, communication and networked system for connecting the huge
amount of devices, as well as computing, data analytics and visualization for the IoT based applications.
IoT also challenges the business ecosystems of the traditional telecommunication sector, and provides new
opportunities for traditional as well as emerging industries.
The summer school will train students in analysing the implication that a new technology area might have on
society, individuals and businesses and to identify emerging business roles and opportunities. It will give the
students an understanding for how digital infrastructure technology areas may impact and enlarge the market
and industry for communication systems and services.
Building on the development of practical IoT business cases, the school will help the students to recognize
values and opportunities that emanate from the enabling properties of emerging technology, inspire them to
consider technology and business together, and to be curious about future IoT applications and solutions.
The school will be case and project oriented, where students will be supported by introductory and
supplementary lectures, invited talks from small and large IoT enterprises, as well as by continuous coaching
by technical and I&E experts.

EIT Digital Finance Summer School
Machine Learning for Financial Data
Budapest, July 22nd – August 4th
Financial data analytics are in the focus of interest due to a number of reasons. For example, predictions of
vector time series underwent a huge progress due to the deep learning technologies. This is the direction of
the stock market. Another direction is to consider the underlying networks. The diverse trees of production
lines form such networks; packaging industry depends on miniaturization, the price of steel depends on the
price of a number of components, such as oil, iron, chemicals as well as many others. The web of prices and
products influences prices in diverse ways and it would be interesting to look at such dependencies. Pattern
mining (item sets, association rules, frequent graphs, etc.) or recommendation techniques represent other
interesting directions. In turn, financial data analytics have several challenges, such as traditional and deep
learning technologies on financial data, data and pattern mining on the web of dependencies, and data
visualization for the sake of human-AI interaction and enhanced user experience.
The school will provide an introduction to the basic underlying, both supervised and unsupervised, machine
learning principles. Data and pattern mining on the web of special transactions-like data as well as
visualization techniques will also be presented. We will finally discuss how to join these technologies in order
to combine machine computational capabilities and human insight.
Students will work on business assignments for innovative use of machine learning in cooperation with
companies and start-ups in the Budapest region.
The social event will be held at Balaton lake, which is 100km from Budapest and is the largest fresh water lake
in Central Europe. It is one of the region's foremost tourist destinations, for relaxing, swimming, fishing and
other sports. We propose to spend the Summer School weekend at the lake and offer the participants an
optional introductory sailing course and Hungarian cuisine cooking lessons.
The Summer School at Budapest is organized just before the famous Sziget Festival, enabling the participants
of the Summer School to prolong their stay in Hungary and take part in the Festival starting on 8 August,
2018. The week-long festival has grown from a relatively low-profile student event in 1993 to become one of
the prominent European rock festivals.
Organisers: Tomas Horváth, András Lőrincz, Zsuzsa Várhalmi, Andrea Boródi, Barbara Hegyi, Zoltán Istenes
