The important of sex education for adolescent

Sex education for adolescent is often debated among people, especially in Indonesia.

Indonesian culture influenced the view of the people that sexissomething that inappropriateto

discuss inyoung people. Even among adults there is boundary about discussing sex

(Koentjaraningrat, 1985; Husny, 1986:83; Singarimbun, 1975:48). However, we

mustknowthat sex educationdoes not always leadstosexual activitybetween husband and wife,

but concernsaboutreproductive health. There is no clear government policy even though the

awareness of the importance of adolescent reproductive health (ARH) increased, so the role

of parents is need to fulfill the knowledge of their children about sexuality. Consider the

teenager’s behavior and their life style nowadays, it is important to give them sex education.

Give based knowledge to teenager about sex will help them know about their part of

body specially their natural body function. They wouldknow and understand

abouthowtheyrespond the changes of their body, so they will notfeel strange, shocked,

confused, and even scared. For example when a girl get mestruasion for the first time she

must be feeling shocked and confused even though she has already knew that every girl will

experience it. In this period the roleof mother is do necessary to give her daughter advice

about menstruation and how to deal with it.

Moreover, adolescence is a period in which they began to try new things and have a

great curiosity about many things including about sexuality. Providing sex education early by

parents will reduce unhealthy curiosity and prevent them to find out the information by their

friend, internet, or other untrusted sources, that will bring negative impact for them (Feldman

2004; Shelov& Baron 1995).

In additon, give them knowledge about the dangerous of become sexually active in

young age or before marriage will effective to make them aware of the negative effect of its

and itwill prevent them to do sexual activities. Situmorang argue that many teenager engage

in risky sexual behavior because lack of knowledge about human reproduction. It can be

proved by healthresearch from University of Indonesia which estimated abortion cases per

year in indonesia about 2 million abortion cases, 30 percent were from adolescent. (utomo.et

al.,2001).

In conclution, I do agree that give knowledge regardinghuman reproduction health

to adolescent is do necessary because it could be a provision for them in controlling their

behavior prudently and make them smarter in determining the attitude not to be involved in

free sex.
