Pinay Student hailed winner in Global Science Competition

Mariel Delos Santos 7-Santan

A Filipina student from Leyte once again proved that Filipino millennials still live up to Rizal’s
belief that the youth is the hope of our fatherland.

Hillary Andales, a student of Philippine Science High School-Eastern Visayas Campus bested
11,000 student-competitors coming from 178 countries in the 2017 Breakthrough Junior Challenge
(BJC).

The BJC is an annual global competition that calls on teenagers across the world to submit
explainer videos no longer than three minutes that simplify big ideas in science and math. Andales’
winning video entitled Relativity and Equivalence of Reference Frames made understandable the
complex modern Physics concepts with the use of a pick-up truck, a few cell phones, and Usain Bolt.

As a winner, Andales received a US250,000 post-secondary scholarship as well as US50,000 prize

for her science teacher and a US100,000 Breakthrough Science Laboratory for her school

‘May this inspire young people, especially my dear Filipinos, to look up and become scientists
themselves – the stars that we should all look up to,’ Andales said in her acknowledgement speech
when she received the award on December 3, 2017 at the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration’s Ames Research Center in California, USA.

With her achievement, she also became a recipient of Mga Bagong Rizal 2017: Pag-asa ng Bayan
last December 30, 2017.

Ang 5G ay akronim para sa fifth generation at

Ang teknolohiyang 5G ay inaasahang magbibigay ng mas malawak na frequency band kasabay ng mas
malawak na ‘spectral bandwidth’ sa bawat frequency channel.

5G simply stands for fifth generation and refers to the next and newest mobile wireless
standard based on the IEEE 802.11ac standard of broadband technology, although a
formal standard for 5G is yet to be set.
According to the Next Generation Mobile Network's 5G white paper, 5G connections
must be based on 'user experience, system performance, enhanced services, business
models and management & operations'.
And according to the Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA) to qualify for a 5G a
connection should meet most of these eight criteria:
1. One to 10Gbps connections to end points in the field
2. One millisecond end-to-end round trip delay
3. 1000x bandwidth per unit area
4. 10 to 100x number of connected devices
5. (Perception of) 99.999 percent availability
6. (Perception of) 100 percent coverage
7. 90 percent reduction in network energy usage
Up to ten-year battery life for low power, machine-type devices
If we look back, we will find that every next decade, one generation is advancing in the field of
mobile technology. Starting from the First Generation 1G in 1980s, Second Generation 2G in 1990s,
Third Generation 3G in 2000s, Fourth Generation 4G in 2010s, and now Fifth Generation 5G, we
are advancing towards more and more sophisticated and smarter technology.
What is 5G Technology?
The 5G technology is expected to provide a new muchwiderthanthepreviousone frequency bands
along with the wider spectral bandwidth per frequency channel. As of now, the predecessors
generations mobile technologies have evidenced substantial increase in peak bitrate. Then — how is
5G different from the previous one especially4G? The answer is — it is not only the increase in
bitrate
made 5G distinct from the 4G, but rather 5G is also advanced in terms of −
High increased peak bit rate
Larger data volume per unit area i. e. highsystemspectralefficiency
High capacity to allow more devices connectivity concurrently and instantaneously
Lower battery consumption
Better connectivity irrespective of the geographic region, in which you are
Larger number of supporting devices
Lower cost of infrastructural development
Higher reliability of the communications
As researchers say, with the wide range of bandwidth radio channels, it is able to support the
speed up to 10 Gbps, the 5G WiFi technology will offer contiguous and consistent coverage −
