nīḍiddēne. When I heard these words come out of the little boys mouth coupled with the food that

he was handing me, I was as confused as you are right now. If only I could understand Kannada

(The local language of Karnataka, a state in India) well enough to talk to him, but alas, I could

only comprehend as little of it as he could understand English. The boy quickly shuffled away,

leaving me puzzled, and all of a sudden his class teacher walked up to me and asked “Did you

understand what Lakshman just told you?”.

Through my essay, I hope to assertively bring out the importance of food security and

especially in lesser economically developed zones, through self-sufficient methods of cultivation.

In addition, I will be relating this to how it affects sociopolitical conditions in a country. “Food

security, as defined by the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, is the condition

in which all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient safe and

nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy

life.”1 And from my own personal experience, I can say that there are millions of people in this

world who are not food secure, and are not able to provide for themselves. And this occurs due to

poverty, immobility, and other factors that hinder one's ability to access fresh and clean food.

While this can probably be combatted by the governing bodies of countries, alongside

organizations in the United Nations, a simpler and faster way to counter this issue could be self-

provisioning or self-sufficiency. If each person can grow their own food, then we would not have

food-security problems. Understandably however, those with jobs find it difficult to also grow

their own food at the same time.

- as a general trend, we see that countries with a greater unemployment rate have a greater

proportion of informal food production as well.

- There are 2 reasons that informal food production occurs, as a hobby, and as a coping strategy.
- a.If informal food production is a coping strategy, it will be more widespread among poor
people than among rich people.
- b.If informal food production is a recreational activity, it will be more or less equally
distributed among social strata.2
- I created my own organization, to make people consider the importance and the ease of
cultivating your own food.
- The famous proverb - Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and
you feed him for a lifetime.
- This is why I argue that feeding people, and just giving them food is not the solution to our
hunger problem. We need to teach them how to provide for themselves, we need to educate
them.

the seeds that they themselves save.
