Florida’s Teacher of the Year Bluntly Writes WHY School
Violence Is Out of Control
Kelly Guthrie Raley has been teaching for 20 years and currently educates kids at
Eustis Middle School in Lake County, Florida. Just last month she was named the
2017-2018 Teacher of the Year. The day after the horrific shooting that took place at
Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, she posted a rant on
Facebook that has since gone viral. In the post, she talked about parental
responsibility, compassion, and respect … and more than 823,000 people have “liked”
the post and agreed with it, while more than 649,000 have shared it with others.
Here’s what Mrs. Raley had to say. Okay, I’ll be the bad guy and say what no one else
is brave enough to say, but wants to say. I’ll take all the criticism and attacks from
everyone because you know what? I’m a TEACHER. I live this life daily. And I
wouldn’t do anything else! But I also know daily I could end up in an active shooter
situation.
Until we, as a country, are willing to get serious and talk about lack of discipline in the
home, horrendous lack of parental support when the schools are trying to control
horrible behavior at school (oh no! Not MY KID. What did YOU do to cause my kid
to react that way?), mental health issues, lack of available care for the mental health
issues, lack of moral values, and yes, I’ll say it-violent TV, Movies, Internet, and Cell
phone video games that take away all sensitivity to ANY compassion for others’ lives,
as well as reality TV that makes it commonplace for people to constantly scream up in
each other’s faces and not value any other person but themselves, we will have a gun
problem in school. Our kids don’t understand the permanency of death anymore!!!
I grew up with guns. And so do a lot of families today just like yesteryear. Everyone
knows that. But you know what? My parents NEVER supported any bad behavior
from me. I was terrified of doing something bad at school, as I would have not had a
life until I corrected the problem and straightened my ass out. My parents invaded my
life. They knew where I was ALL the time. They made me have a curfew. They made
me wake them up when I got home. They made me respect their rules. They had full
control of their house, and at any time could and would go through every inch of my
bedroom, backpack, pockets, anything!
Parents: it’s time to STEP UP! Be the parent that actually gives a crap about
their children! Be the annoying mom that pries and knows what your kid is
doing. STOP being their friend. They have enough “friends” at school. Be their parent.
Being the “cool mom” means not a damn thing when either your kid is dead, or your
kid kills other people because they were allowed to have their space and privacy in
YOUR HOME. I’ll say it again. My home was filled with guns growing up. For God’s
sake, my daddy was an 82nd Airborne Ranger who lost half his face serving our coun-
try. But you know what? I never dreamed of shooting anyone with his guns. I never
dreamed of taking one! I was taught respect for human life, compassion, rules,
common decency, and most of all, I was taught that until I moved out, my life and
bedroom wasn’t mine… it was theirs. And they were going to know what was
happening because they loved me and wanted the best for me.
There! Say that I’m a horrible person. I didn’t bring up gun control, and I will refuse
to debate it with anyone. This post wasn’t about gun control. This was me, loving the
crap out of people and wanting the best for them. This was about my school babies and
knowing that God created each one for greatness, and just wanting them to reach their
futures. It’s about 20 years ago this year I started my teaching career. Violence was not
this bad 20 years ago. Lack of compassion wasn’t this bad 20 years ago. And God
knows 20 years ago that I wasn’t afraid daily to call a parent because I KNEW that 9
out of 10 would cuss me out, tell me to go to Hell, call the news on me, call the school
board on me, or post all over Facebook about me because I called to let them know
what their child chose to do at school…because they are a NORMAL kid!!!!!
Those 17 lives mattered!
When are we and parents going to take our own responsibility seriously?
Until we do, plan on seeing future school shootings.
Walton County Beach Driving Lottery Begins on
April 1st
Each year, 150 Beach Driving Permits are issued through a random lottery process.
Applications for the lottery will be available beginning April 1st and are accepted
through May 10th of each year.
Applications will not be accepted unless all eligibility requirements are met and all
documentation is provided at the time of application. Incomplete applications will
not be eligible for the lottery draw.
The following copies of documents must be submitted in the name of the applicant
at the time of application:
· Copy of proof of full-time residency (Driver’s License with Walton County
address or Walton County Voter’s Registration)
· Copy of Driver’s License (if using voter registration card as proof of
residency)
· Proof of real property ownership (if property owner)
· Proof that property taxes are current (if property owner)
· Current 4-wheel drive vehicle registration (registered in the State of Florida;
in applicants name; 4x4)
· Completed 2018 lottery application
The lottery takes place May 15th of each year. Those chosen by random drawing
will be notified by e-mail and will be able to purchase a permit from the County
Administration Office beginning June 1st.
The permits are valid for one year beginning June 1st and are non-renewable. The
annual fee for a beach driving permit is $135.00.
Selected applicants will have 30 calendar days, beginning June 1st, to purchase a
permit. After 30 days, the permit will be offered to the next person in line until all
150 permits have been purchased. Those selected in the lottery but fail to purchase
their permit within 30 calendar days will forfeit their chance to obtain the beach
driving permit.
The lottery is open only to full-time Walton County Residents who are Walton
County property owners and/or Walton County-registered voters.
Online and hardcopy applications will be available on the County’s Beach Driving
Permits page beginning April 1st.

'Uncontrolled party' in rented West Vancouver home leaves heralds the rise of another

A 14-year-old girl and her family are on the hook for thousands of dollars
after a party the teen held at a rented house got out of control. The girl had acre homesites, and a rural
rented the house online using her parents' card without their authorization.
West Vancouver police said they were called to deal with reports of an
"uncontrolled party" happening at a house in the 2400-block of Ottawa
Avenue on March 9.
Police said their officers found approximately 200 teenagers flooding out of
the residence when they arrived. "We were receiving multiple calls ...
reporting a large scale disturbance," said Const. Jeff Palmer of West
Vancouver police. "Officers attending had basically swarms of teenagers
leaving the house." Palmer said the party had quickly grown beyond its
intended size and the home was left with extensive damage. "Among all the

Beyond Opioids: The Future
of Pain Management
Cindi Scheib wanted to die.
A three-day weekend spent jumping
and dancing on Labor Day 2014 had
left her with a neck injury – specifi-
cally the cervical spine – that was possibly an exacerbation of an unrecognized
mountain biking injury earlier that year. To make matters worse, her doctor
performed the surgery to fix the injury on the wrong part of her spine.
Now 54, Scheib has lived with constant neck pain and other unusual sensations
throughout her body ever since. These sensations, including electrical shocks
down her spine, buzzing, vibrating, burning sensations, ringing in her ears and
sensitivity to normal noises, had gotten so bad, she said, that “I wanted to go to
bed and not wake up tomorrow. This life was so bad, so horrible, that I could-
n’t imagine how I was going to live the rest of whatever life I had,” says the
Harrisburg, PA, nurse.
Today, the pain may be worse than it was in 2014, but Scheib is better. She
says that’s because she stepped off the well-trodden path of lifelong prescrip-
tion painkillers and took the less traveled road of pain management -- a combi-
nation of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatments that gave Scheib
her life back.
Like Scheib, an estimated 100 million Americans live with long-term pain.
Since the 1990s, physicians’ go-to treatment for constant pain has been pre-
scription opioids, such as oxycodone or hydrocodone. Though the evidence
that opioids work for long-term pain is lacking, Americans get more prescrip-
tions for them than the citizens of any other
country in the world. The prescribing epi-
demic has led to a national crisis of opioid
misuse, overdose, and death. Now, as policy-
makers and health care providers work to
stem the tide of addiction and abuse, patients
and some prescribers worry that the changes
will take pain medications out of the hands of
people who truly need them.
Drugmakers may have zeroed in on a target for chronic back pain and os-
teoarthritis pain. The FDA recently fast-tracked the drug tanezumab for ap-
proval. Federal regulators had previously halted work on tanezumab and other
drugs like it over concerns about side effects. The non-opioid blocks the pro-
duction of nerve growth factor, a substance that’s needed for certain types of
pain to happen. Several other anti-nerve growth factor drugs are in clinical
trials.

California Appoints Illegal Alien to State Office
California has its first illegal alien in state office, after Senate President pro Tem Kevin de
León (D-Los Angeles) appointed Lizbeth Mateo to the California Student Opportunity and
Access Program Project Grant Advisory Committee.
Mateo, an attorney, was born in Mexico and came to the U.S. illegally at the age of 14 with
her parents, who are also illegal aliens, according to the Sacramento Bee.
She complained that illegal aliens are not adequately represented in state government, and
described her appointment as a step towards correcting that alleged injustice.
“While undocumented students have become more visible in our state, they remain
underrepresented in places where decisions that affect them are being made,” Mateo said, as
quoted by Fox News.
De León, who is running for U.S. Senate against incumbent Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA),
described Mateo as: “a courageous, determined and intelligent young woman who at great
personal risk has dedicated herself to fight for those seeking their rightful place in this
country,” according to Fox News.
Mateo, however, seems somewhat confused about which country she prefers.
In a Facebook post in 2016, apparently celebrating her graduation from Santa Clara
University School of Law, Mateo declared, in Spanish: “[E]verything is dedicated to
Oaxaca, Mexico!! to that land that I miss so much.”
While she is the first illegal alien to hold a state office, she is not the first elevated to public
office in California. In 2015, the city council of Huntington Park, California, appointed two
illegal aliens to city commissions, sparking a public backlash.
De León and other state officials are stoking an ongoing confrontation with the federal
government over federal immigration laws.

Junior Lifeguard Program Registration Opens
WALTON COUNTY, Fla.—March 5, 2018— It’s time to start planning summer activities
for the kids, and the South Walton Fire District has the perfect opportunity for them to learn
better beach safety, develop a skill set for the future and develop new friendships.
Participants will learn a range of beach safety skills including: surf lifesaving, personal
safety, sun safety, surf conditions, resuscitation and first aid. In order to sign up for the class,
participants must meet swimming qualifications with proper freestyle form. Ages 9-11 must
be able to swim 100 yards in 4 minutes or less, 12-13 must swim 150 yards in 5 minutes or
less and 14-15 year olds must swim 200 yards in 6 minutes or less. All ages must be able to
tread water for a minimum of 1 minute. A swim test will be conducted on Saturday May 19
and 26 at Ed Walline Beach Access. Parents must attend the tryouts, and a payment of $185
per child will be collected after the swim tryouts are complete.
Hogs for dogs
More than 100 animal-loving bikers traveled around the Emerald Coast as part of the Paws
on the Throttle Poker Run on Sunday. This year’s theme was “Hair of the Dog,” a play on
2018 being the Year of the Dog in the Chinese zodiac calendar.
Bikers started at the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society shelter. The poker run continued at a
handful of stops in Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Santa Rosa Beach, Freeport and Niceville
where the run ended at Cafe Edge with a live band, beer and massages for bikers. At each
stop, bikers collected one playing card, and the one with the best poker hand at the end of the
run won. “This fundraising helps the shelter massively,” said Manda Moore, community
development coordinator at PAWS. “It helps fund programs and will go toward our new
shelter. And we love the bikers. They tend to be some of the most generous people. It’s kind
of like some our animals ... you don’t want to judge them from the outside.” This is the 11th
year of the poker run. Sherman Pyle said he’s participated nearly every year. “We gotta take
care of the animals,” said Pyle who has a miniature dachshund at home. “We’re out here for
the cause.” Father and daughter team Rick and Krystal Helms are both animal lovers. Rick
has two cats and a bird, and Krystal has four rescue cats of her own. They were both excited
to hit the road.“We’re ready to have a good time,” said Rick as he hopped on his motorcycle.
“We’ve done this for years.” While Patsy Henson was registering she gushed to volunteers
about her rescued pets from PAWS. “We love PAWS,” she said. “The people here are so
good with the animals. As soon as we heard about this event, we were in.
I love the camaraderie. “They’ll all good people who care about animals. ”
