Motivation in Life and Work.

Those are the questions why we need to be motivated in our lives, in our way of living, in our
business and in our work.

What is Motivation?

Motivation has been defined in numerous ways.

Did you know what your motivation is?

How can you stay motivated?
What makes you motivated?

Those are the things that can make you happy and help you to achieve your dreams

NATURE OF MOTIVATION

Motivation may be meaningfully discussed from two angles.

Inner Motivation
(a state of needs, wants or desires, or desires, a state in which bodily energy is mobilized, a state
of a drive which the organism is impelled to relieve)

Outer Motivation
(a state of drive and by the direction of behavior toward some goal selected in preference to other
possible goals)

There are five different levels and every level has a certain need.

Physiological Needs – this needs fall in the very first level of pyramid, this are biological needs
required for survival like food, air , water etc. this are also called basic survival needs, necessary
to sustain life.

Safety and Security Needs –look for protection from physical dangerous and economic security
all this needs fall under safety and security needs.

Social Needs – people needs for love and affection, an organization can influence human
behaviour thru supervisions, its communication system,

Esteem needs – can be sub- divided into two parts (1) self-esteem – needs cover self – respect,
self-confidence, knowledge and independence (2) esteem of other means reputation and
recognition

Self-actualization needs – this needs arise when one person desire to bring out his or her full
potential,
Maslow’s Theory seems to be very simple when giving description about complex process of
motivation.
Some additional features of Maslow’s hierarchy are as follows:

1. The lower level needs (physiological, security) have to be satisfied before the next level
or higher level can operate.
2. The higher the need, the less imperative it is for survival; the longer gratification can be
postponed, and the easier it is for the need to disappear permanently.
3. Maslow said that self-actualization is never completely satisfied. Even if a person reaches
self-actualization, he is still strongly motivated to do more or to do better.
4. Higher needs require better outside conditions (economic, education, etc) to make them
possible. For instance, if an employee’s esteem needs are satisfied through a promotion in
his job, he will perhaps need to pursue an MBA or Ph.D. to get aspired promotion.
5. It is possible to slide back in the hierarchy. A broken marriage or a loss of a job can make
one lose the higher need of self-esteem. The lower level security need replaces self-
esteem as the greatest motive force again.

What is the advantage of McClelland’s three needs Theory?

Provide a clear picture for the organization and managers
Provides an understanding to deal with employees
More empirical evidence

The disadvantage of McClelland three needs theory.

Someone who need for power will do something unmoral to get the power
The need for affiliation manager will became lazy and irresponsible
Without any order, the need for achievement cannot do work by themselves

There are advantage and disadvantage of this theory, hence it is important to use it at the right
time and situation
