First World War
The First World War or Great War was a conflict that involved most of the European nations along with Russia, United States, Middle East and other regions. It was mentioned that it started in 1914 and was fought by the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Turkey) against the Allies (France, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, Japan and, from 1917, United States). Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, who was heir to the throne, was assassinated by a Yugoslav nationalist, Gavrilo Princip on 28 June 1914. This made Austria give an ultimatum to Serbia and a month later, Austria declared war to the Kingdom of Serbia. Around that time, the war on France was declared by Germany because their border was heavily fortified on both sides and according to the Schlieffen Plan, Germany invaded Luxembourg and Belgium. These two are the main reasons of why did the First World War started. In 1915, Italy joined the Allies and Bulgaria their enemies; Romania joined the Allies in 1916, as United States did in 1917. The Russian government is known to collapse in March 1917 and to start a revolution in November. The military defeat of Russia led to the Treaty of Brest Litovsk, which said that Germans had won a significant victory. On 4 November 1918, Austria-Hungary accepted a truce with Germany. Few days later, the war was won by the Allies.
