Effect of Low Sugar Chewing Gum Toward Increased Secretion of Saliva
in Patients Undergoing Therapy of Hemodialysis at Deli Serdang Hospital Lubuk Pakam in 2016
ABSTRACT
Hemodialysis therapy refers to appropriate action to replace the kidneys work to be
done despite the fluid restriction intake result in most patients who complain the dry mouth. One way to treat dry mouth is low sugar chewing gum to stimulate salivary secretion. This research was conducted to see the effect of low sugar chewing gum to increase the saliva secretion in patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy at Deli Serdang Hospital Lubuk Pakam in 2016. This research was Pre-Eksperimental design with One Group Pre Test-Post Test Design by a sampling technique that is Quota Sampling. The sample of this research amounted to 59 peoples and it used univariate and bivariate analysis. The research showed that average of saliva before chewing gum (post test) were 0,46 mL/min and the average of saliva after chewing gum (post test) were 2,29 mL/min. And from the bivariate result the valus p = 0,000 < = 0,005, it can concluded that there were significant of low sugar chewing gum to increase saliva secretion in patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy at Deli Serdang Hospital Lubuk Pakam in 2016. It is expected to hemodialysis room attendant to be able to apply this result to prepare the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) management intervention thrist with low sugar chewing gum in patients with chronic renal failure undegoing hemodialysis therapy.
