LESSON: Time Word Problem

LEARNING INTENTIONS:
Curricular: MATERIALS:

BIG IDEAS: - I can add intervals of time White boards, markers

Development of computational fluency in - I can work in a team to problem solve

addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
Successful Learner Traits: ASSESSMENT:
division of whole numbers requires flexible
composing and decomposing - I am strategic Share answers and group discussion at end of
activity

ACCOMODATIONS:
CURRICULAR COMPENTENCIES:
Grade: 3 Word problem may be adjusted for higher/lower level
Develop, demonstrate, and apply mathematical thinking
understanding through play inquiry, and problem
solving

CONTENT:

How to tell time with analog and digital clocks,

using 12- and 24-hour clocks

Rationale:

Working together in teams to solve a

word problem allows them to practice
their addition, problem solving, and
teamwork
Teaching sequence:

Hook:
Step 1. Ask students if anyone can define time management
Step 2. Ask relevant life questions (eg. Have you ever wanted to take a nap but had homework? Have you ever wanted to grab a coffee but were borderline
late? Have you ever wondered how many friends episodes you can watch and still have time to shower before class?)
Introduce concept:
Step 1: Ask students ‘Does anyone know how many seconds are in a minute’?
Possible adaptation: if no one knows, time the minute hand going around the clock
Step 2. Have students name different number combinations that add up to 60 (eg. 30 and 30, 40 and 20)
Step 3. Talk about doubling/tripling. Ask students how many seconds are in 2 mins/3 mins? What are some number combinations that add up to these?
You will be working in groups of three to solve a time-management problem
Step 4. Co-create group work expectations as a class.
Activity:
Step 1. Explain the activity. If you have the pen you cannot write your own ideas, you must write your partner's ideas. Therefore if you have an idea you must
pass off the pen.
Step 2. Demo writing down partner ideas using a simple addition question (eg. 2 + 2)
Step 3: Write the problem on the board and read
Debrief:
Each group shares results and explains reasoning
