When you spend your time thinking about other people’s

milestones, it can make your own road feel much, much

longer. Like what you’ve accomplished isn’t actually worth a
damn.
Never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.

When you see someone more successful than you, say this
phrase to yourself:
“Wow, that’s impressive. I’m excited to get there myself.
How can I learn from their success?”

It might feel weird the first couple of times that you do it. But if you follow through and turn
this into a habit when you see growth envy setting in, you’ll actually change the way you
think.

This exercise accomplishes three very important things:

1. It makes you happy for other people’s success. I can’t quantify this, and I can’t
prove that it does anything. But it does. Learning to be genuinely happy for other
people’s success will make you happier yourself.
2. If reframes the comparison. Rather than focusing on where the other person might
be, it focuses you on looking at their success as an inevitability for yourself if you
keep working hard.
3. It sets you up to learn and get better. Most of the valuable lessons I’ve learned in
business have been from people in their “middle” helping me out in my relative
beginning.

And because you’re happy for them and excited to learn, most people will be more than
happy to answer questions about how they got there.

What we all need to realize is that there is plenty of love and wonder
and joy and success to go around.

Remind Yourself Of All The Things You Already Have That You've Wanted In
The Past
Often, when we actually attain what we want, we forget that we ever
wanted it in the first place. This is the root of greed, and where a lack
of gratitude takes root. It's very easy to remain focused on the next
"goal," the next thing to achieve, earn, or fix — but if you do that, your
life will be spent perpetually in a state of not being good enough,
rather than being grateful for what you have (while still working for
more).

Come Up With A Plan For Achieving What You Don't Have

You'll have a lot less time to be jealous of other people if you're too busy working toward actually getting
the things you think they can have and you can't.

Seek Out The Best In Others, Then Verbally Or Otherwise Support And Affirm
Them

For whatever reason, this is an almost instant cure for envy.

Stay Humble

Being jealous means you desire a sense of superiority (and feel

threatened that you perceive someone else to have that superiority).
This is not a great quality to have. Remember that even when you are
successful, or in the position that the person you envy is in, it's not
good to let it go to your head. Learn to be humble now.

Stop Thinking Everyone Else Is Thinking About You, Or Evaluating Your Life

Want to feel really super free? Consider this: nobody actually cares as
much about your life as you do, and nobody is thinking of you other
than in random, passing thoughts now and again. That spotlight you
think is on you constantly? It's all in your head.

Run Your Own Race

Flowers don't think of competing with the flowers next to them, they
just bloom — you know how the saying goes. The goal isn't to be
better than other people, it's to be better than you were before.
Feeling jealous of other people's accomplishments is a pretty solid
sign you're not focused on the right thing.

Ask Yourself If You're Honestly Working Hard Enough On Your Life

Most people who experience a lot of jealousy are not, in all honesty,
doing what they know they should and need to be doing. They are
focused on how angry they are that someone else seems to have
already arrived at the end-goal, all while not prepping to do the work to
get there themselves.

Focus On Connecting With People, Not Being Superior To Them

If you enter social situations with the intention of speaking with people
to understand them better, or learning something you didn't know, or
simply enjoying another person's company, you will focus on
connecting – which you are not doing when you are feeling jealous
and envious.
Stop Hating: Five Reasons It Pays to Get Happy About Other People’s
Success

By Tai Goodwin

According to the Urban Dictionary, a “hater” can be defined by:

 A person who feels anger and/or jealousy for someone who has succeeded in
something they have worked hard for.
 A being that speaks badly, and/or takes negative actions in attempt to create
problems for a successful person.
Clearly, being a “hater” is not a good thing. And how we handle other people’s
success, especially when things may not be going so well for us, is an
indicator of our maturity and belief in ourselves.
So what do you do when you see someone thriving with the opportunities,
recognition, clients and wins that you want for your life or business? You learn
to celebrate other people’s success.

If you master generating genuine happiness for other people, not only will you
find a cure for the envy, which can sabotage your success, but there are
additional benefits as well. Here’s what you open the door to as you welcome
and express joy for others:

 Freedom from frustration and worry. When you see another person’s win
as a loss for you, you pave the way for discouragement and resentment to set
in. Instead allow other people’s success to ignite hope for the success coming
in your time of harvest.
 More opportunities to be happy! Rejoicing with others creates an
opportunity to multiply the good times you get to celebrate. By seizing every
chance to sincerely congratulate other’s on their success, you are creating an
atmosphere for others to be willing to celebrate your successes.
 Improved relationships with others. Healthy relationships involve sharing
both ups and downs. People are more likely to respond positively to you if
they sense that you’re truly happy for them.
 Good karma. You reap what you sow. Giving unselfishly creates a win for
everybody.
I know, it all sounds good, but how do you actually pull it off — and do it
sincerely? Here are seven ideas:

1. Proactively look for opportunities to shine a spotlight on someone

else. Keep in touch with what’s going on in the lives of the people around you.
Others may be bashful about mentioning their own victories but still appreciate
having their efforts recognized.
2. Create a daily gratitude list. It’s difficult to be happy for other people when
you are dissatisfied with your life. Remind yourself of all the wonderful things
you have to be grateful for. Go one step better and share one thing a day with
someone.
3. Be aware of your jealousy. Weigh the consequences of jealousy and envy.
Be honest with yourself when you notice your thoughts and feelings heading
down a negative path.
4. “Fake it till you make it.” Or as Karen Salmansohn says — “Faith it till you
make it.” It’s okay to use some artificial gestures to get started. Even if you’re
not purely happy that your ex-husband got an award, you can say something
gracious.
5. Start with the people you love. Charity starts at home and so should the
celebration. It might be difficult to get instantly excited about the lives of
strangers. However, you can start by focusing on the people closest to you.
For example, cheer with enthusiasm when your cousin wins an award, your
brother gets a promotion, or a friend successfully closes a deal.
6. Work your way up to dealing with the hard stuff. For example, celebrating
with someone that got something you wanted for yourself or being happy for
someone you believe is undeserving.
7. With practice, you’ll be able to tackle the more sensitive issues. When
you find the techniques that work with the people you love, you can use those
same strategies with more challenging opportunities.
So the next time someone you know gets great news, don’t hate — celebrate
with them. Remember, you reap what you sow: You can look forward to
welcoming more joy into your own life as you celebrate other people’s
success.

Jealousy is a powerful force, that we often need God's words to
help us overcome it. These Bible verses lead us back to the path of
patience, faith, and self control.

1 Corinthians 3:3

Chapter Parallel Compare

3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among

you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?

1 Corinthians 10:13

Chapter Parallel Compare

13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.

And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can

bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you

can endure it.

1 Corinthians 13:4

proud.

Ecclesiastes 4:4

Chapter Parallel Compare

4 And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy

of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

James 4:11

Chapter Parallel Compare

11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks

against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and

judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in

judgment on it.

Proverbs 14:30

Chapter Parallel Compare

30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

Proverbs 27:4

Chapter Parallel Compare

4 Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before

jealousy?

Psalm 143:8-9

Chapter Parallel Compare

8 Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my

trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my

life.9 Rescue me from my enemies, LORD, for I hide myself in you.

Romans 12:21

Chapter Parallel Compare

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

James 4:2-3

Chapter Parallel Compare

2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get

what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do

not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with

wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

Galatians 5:22-23

Chapter Parallel Compare

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness,

goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things

there is no law.

1 Peter 2:9

Chapter Parallel Compare

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s

special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called

you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Corinthians 1:27-29

Chapter Parallel Compare

27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God

chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the

lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are

not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.

Philippians 2:3

Chapter Parallel Compare

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility

value others above yourselves,

Psalm 37:1-3

Chapter Parallel Compare

1 Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do

wrong; 2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will

soon die away. 3 Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and

enjoy safe pasture.

James 3:14-16

Chapter Parallel Compare

14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not

boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down

from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have

envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

Song of Songs 8:6-7

Chapter Parallel Compare

6 Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is

as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like

blazing fire, like a mighty flame. 7 Many waters cannot quench love; rivers

cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for

love, it would be utterly scorned.

James 4:7-8

Chapter Parallel Compare

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from

you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands,

you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Galatians 5:14-15

neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or

you will be destroyed by each other.
