Athens in numbers throughout the years
Athens has been at the centre of the International Media Office’s planning from 2014 to 2017. In particular, focus has
been given to restoring the image of the Greek capital, which was negatively affected by the riots, financial instability,
referendum, protests and refugees crisis that took place during this time.

A major priority of this “Athens Case” has been to position the Greek capital as a top European city break destination.
As the image of the city evolved, attention was given to showcasing the city’s cultural aspect, from the classic to
modern, through opening of new cultural hotspots, revealing new hip neighbourhoods, and the emergence of the
gastronomy scene. The Athens Classic Marathon also constituted a significant promotional opportunity.

The city caught the interest of international media through the media and digital influencers programme of Marketing
Greece, resulting in more than 300 print and online publications, including destination features, photoshoots, special
reports, broadcast opportunities and blog posts.

“The Athens Case” produced in total 269 print and 116 online publications and 72 blogposts,
mainly from the key markets of Germany, France and UK, but also from Spain, Italy, Brazil, US,
Canada, China, Mexico and Argentina.
