SINCE 1898
KA-BAR traces its roots to the Brown Family in the 1890s. Wallace and
Emerson Brown were cutlery salesmen who saw an opportunity to enter
the knife making business. Their first venture, Brown Brothers Razor, failed,
and they returned to cutlery sales. With help from their father, John Brown,
the Brown brothers soon had another opportunity to return to the knife
making business.
The Browns acquired the Tidioute Cutlery Company in Tidioute, PA. They
would begin to use the name Union Razor, and eventually, Union Cutlery
Company. In the 1910s the company was moved to Olean, NY, where it
continues to operate today.

Logos and imagery are an important part of

the KA-BAR® story. From the Dog’s Head
COMMEMORATIVE Fighting/Utility Knives
– which has been used since the early 20th
Century, though for unknown reasons – to
the iconic North American “The Union”
shield, KA-BAR® has always had a strong
visual presence. The most famous is the “Kill
A Bear” logo, which illustrates an important
part of how KA-BAR® got its name.
This year marks KA-BARs 120th anniversary.

We’re celebrating by offering this laser
engraved commemorative knife that features
our world famous brand name, “KA-BAR®”,

OUR MOST FAMOUS KNIFE

On December 9, 1942, Union Cutlery submitted the 1219C2, USMC KA-BAR
knife pattern to the United States Marine Corps in hopes that it would
become general issue to that branch of the military.
After some refinements to the original design, the USMC KA-BAR knife
became so well recognized for its quality that “Kabar” became the name by
which many referred to this knife pattern.
Today, the original USMC Fighting and Utility Knife remains the first choice
for many men and women of service who carry it as their personal knife
option.

World War II, John Ek employed disabled
Americans and produced six models of knives
beginning in 1941.
The “Ek Commando Knives”, as he referred to

them, were designed for close quarters and

DESIGN EVOLUTION
It’s tough to argue with the success of the world’s most
recognizable, time-tested fixed blade knife so we did
what any smart company would do, we didn’t change
the original design, we expanded upon it.
The high carbon, non-reflective black blade is epoxy

powder-coated and tests prove the finish is more
durable than ever. The classic oval shape of the original
KA-BAR® remains and has been modernized with Kraton
G®, a material nearly impervious to sweat, chemicals, C
water and wear.

THE LEGEND
“K’d A Bar” were the words of an Alaskan hunter who was mauled by a Kodiak bear and
wrote the company to share his story. As he explained it, his gun jammed and the hunter
used his Union Cutlery knife to successfully defend himself against a wounded bear. In the
process, he killed the bear, or “K’d A Bar”.
The leadership of Union Cutlery – the predecessor to KA-BAR® - was so impressed and
honored by the hunter’s letter, they adopted KA-BAR as a trademark to be used on a
variety of Union Cutlery hunting knives.
At the beginning of World War II, the United States Marine Corps fighting/utility knife was
also marked with this trademark. Then, in 1952, the company name was officially changed
from Union Cutlery to KA-BAR®.

understand what makes a knife effective for close-
quarters defense. Benner set out to design a low profile
fixed blade knife for law enforcement, military and
security personnel that could be drawn quickly and
