Introduction (Approx. 10 minutes)

** Attention getter: When the teacher says, “Time to…” The students say, “Fire Up!” **
Before the students arrive:
 On the front white board write the Agenda.

Agenda
1.Bell Work (APK)
2. Maps
3. New Brunswick Box
4. Me and My Province
5. Exit Ticket

 On the white board next to the door, write the GCO and SCOs.
GCO: People Place, and Environment
SCO: 3.1.1 I can place New Brunswick on the map.
3.1.2 I can explain the many physical features, climate, and vegetation of New Brunswick.

 On the four tables there are going to be four colored pylons with four matching buckets. The pylons and the buckets
should be the same color. In the buckets will be the needed materials (Bell Work (APK) worksheet, a package of Crayons,
the Me and My Province circle cutouts, markers, pencils, and the Exit Ticket worksheet.
 Use blue USB to open the PowerPoint presentation labeled “New Brunswick”
As the students arrive:
 Stand outside the door, greeting the students as they come in. Hand the students the Bell Work (New Brunswick Flag
worksheet). On each page the students will notice a colored star on the top right corner (pink, yellow, green or blue).
These stars correlate to the matching pylon and bucket on the tables.
** For example: If the student has a pink star on the top right corner of their Bell Work, they go to the pink table (pink pylon/pink
bucket).
 When it is time to start the lesson use the attention getter to bring focus to the front.
Introduction:
 “Good afternoon everyone! How is everyone doing today? Today we’re going to be learning about our province. I know
that everyone must know something about New Brunswick, but we are going to dig a little deeper today!”
 Move to the whiteboard at the front of the classroom and go over the agenda.
 Now, proceed to the board next to the door and go over today’s GCO and SCO.
APK
 “When you came into class today, you worked on your Bell Work (New Brunswick Flag worksheet). This was to see if you
knew the colors of the flag.”
 “Who can tell me what colors they used to color in their flag?”
** Do this for a couple different parts of the flag randomly calling on students to answer.

Develop the Instruction (Approx. 20 minutes)

New Brunswick (Slide 2-5)
 Use attention getter to bring focus to the front.
 Change to slide 2
 Mention to the students that we are going to be going over the colors of the flag
“Let’s see if you got the right colors in the right spots!”
 Change to slide 3. Talk about where New Brunswick falls on the Provincial map
“Here is the Provincial map of New Brunswick, we can see that New Brunswick boarders Quebec and Nova Scotia – which are also
provinces in Canada. New Brunswick also touches the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Fundy”
 Change to slide 4 - Talk about where New Brunswick falls on the map of Canada.
“As you can see, there is a little arrow pointing to New Brunswick! However, New Brunswick is much smaller than a lot of the
surrounding provinces. We are a very lucky province because we border on the ocean!”
 Change to slide 5. Talk about where New Brunswick falls on the map of the world.
“When looking at the world map, you can barely see New Brunswick! We might think that we are pretty big, but in comparison to
the whole world, we are pretty small.”
New Brunswick Box
 Use attention getter to bring focus to the front.
 Tell the students that we will now be switching gears and talking about the things that define our province (physical
features, climate, and vegetation)
 Tell the students that as a class they will be pulling items/pictures out of our New Brunswick Box.
 Ask one student to pull something out of the box and try to explain how that item/picture is important to New
Brunswick.
Teacher: “Can I please I have someone pull an item out of the box?”
Student: “Sure!” – pulls an image of Parlee Beach Provincial Park
Teacher: “Why do you think Parlee Beach Provincial Park is an important aspect of our province?”
Student: “Parlee Beach Provincial Park is a huge tourist attraction for our Province”
Teacher: “Right! Parlee Beach Provincial Park is one of North America’s finest beaches, this park boasts the warmest salt
water in Canada. There is a variety of activities offered and the seaside campground boasts over 190 campsites on a
beautifully-groomed property!”
 Continue this process until all the items are picked out of the box
See attached sheet labelled “NEW BRUNSWICK BOX” for reference/answers
Me and My Province
 Use attention getter to bring focus to the front.
 Tell the students that we are now going to look at not only how we fit into our province, but also our homes, our street,
our city, our province, our country, our continent, and our planet.
“Please reach into your buckets and get out the circles. There should be one for every person.”
 Use attention getter to bring focus to the front
 Explain to the students that they are going to draw a picture on each of the circles to best describe the title. For
example: On the circle that says, “Me”, the student will draw a picture of themselves, on the circle that says, “My
Country”, the student could draw a picture of the Canadian flag, on the circle that says “My Continent”, the student can
draw a picture of North America.
“We are going to use these circles to see how our little selves fit into a much bigger picture (our planet). You are going to
draw pictures of what defines you in regard to your home, your street, your country, your planet, etc.”
Move to Closure (Exit Ticket)

Closure (Approx. 10 minutes)

Exit Ticket:
 Explain to the students that they will now be doing an Exit Ticket that will summarize what they learnt in today’s lesson.
 Explain that in the buckets on their tables there are worksheets (NEW BRUNSWICK) and pencils.
See attached worksheet labelled “NEW BRUNSWICK” for reference/answers
 When instructed, get the students to take out a worksheet and pencil.
 Use attention getter to bring focus back to the front
 Explain that they will use the lines at the bottom to explain what they learnt through the lesson
 Give the students 5 minutes to complete this task
 Use attention getter to bring focus back to the front
 Select a random student to share what they reflected on
** Continue this same pattern for a couple students
