General information
WS Operations Integrity manager\\InTouch content ID# 3313701\1.7\Release Date:05-Aug-2016\EDMS UID: 1651848365\Produced: 05-Aug-2016 20:59:27

1.1

Minimum requirements:

• Each component in service, except FMC wings with forged-in datecodes,

must be identified with a unique serial number that will remain with the
equipment until it is removed from service.
• Each piece in service, except FMC wings with forged-in datecodes, must be
inspected and pressure tested as per this guideline, at least, once every
twelve (12) months unless otherwise required on a more frequent basis.
• The results of the inspection and pressure test must be documented. The
documentation (either a paper copy or electronic copy) must be kept on file
at the operating location for one year or until the next inspection.
• Any piece not meeting the requirements of this guideline must be taken out
of service and repaired or destroyed.

Note
FMC manufactures loose wings with a forged-in datecode. When used for
sensors or bullplugs before the expiry date, these wings are not required to have
serialization, thread check or pressure test according to Well Services QHSE
Standard 23, Table 23-5: FMC Datecoded Wings. However, the use of such a
datecoded wing only removes the annual testing requirement for the wing itself,
not for an annual test or inspection of all other parts of the assembly, such as
the bullplug, pressure transducer, etc.

1.2 Annual inspection requirements

Calibration of sensors is not covered by this standard.

1.2.1 Visual inspection

• Ensure that the component was manufactured by an approved supplier
according to the current version of Well Services QHSE Standard 05, or that
an exemption approved by Well Services headquarters is in place.
WS Operations Integrity manager\\InTouch content ID# 3313701\1.7\Release Date:05-Aug-2016\EDMS UID: 1651848365\Produced: 05-Aug-2016 20:59:27

• Ensure that the component has not been welded for any reason.
• Verify that the component has a serial number stamped on the item or on a
band; if the number is missing, perform the necessary research to identify the
component's serial number.
• Inspect the internal bore of the component for erosion or corrosion. If the
component shows any signs of erosion or corrosion, remove the component
from service and destroy it.
• Check for cracks in the root of the 1502/1002 (4-in) acme thread or any
other damages to this thread. If there are any concerns, perform an MPI
of the union.
• Inspect the outside of the component for surface damage such as dents,
gouges, or unusual flat spots. If there is external damage, remove the
component from service and destroy it.
• Check for cracks in the 90-degree angle on the back side of the male hub. If
there are any concerns, perform an MPI of the union.
• Remove the seal rubber and check its condition and the condition of the
sealing face. Replace any seal rings that show damage of any kind. If the
sealing face is pitted or otherwise damaged, this part of the component will
need to be replaced.
• Without grinding them, check to see if the hammer lugs on the wing nut can
be dressed and still remain within acceptable limits. See Figure 1-3, part A.

1.2.2 Union inspection

1. Verify that all go/no-go gauges are current on their calibrations.
2. Thoroughly clean all parts of the union.
3. Clearly identify that the wing is made by FMC or SPM. If not and no
exemption approved by Well Services HQ is in place, remove from service
and destroy the wing.
4. If the wing is 2-in and is marked “TEST” instead of “CWP,” remove the wing
and destroy it.

1-3 WS S23 G12: Bull Plugs, Sensors, Sensor Wings, and Other Unions / Inspection 1-3
and Test

5. Grind the hammer lugs on the wing to match Figure 1-3 (p. 1-6), part B, and
measure L; if any lug matches Figure 1-3, part C, or has L equal to or less
than Lm (see Table 1-1 (p. 1-6)), remove the wing and destroy it.
6. Newer FMC wings with a forged datecode must be checked for expiration.
Wings before the expiry date skip steps 7, 8, and 9.
After the expiry date, the wing must be:

Inspected per steps 7, 8, and 9

and
either be serialized and documented if used for loose unions or can be
returned for general use with treating equipment.
7. Screw gauge #1 into the wing until it is hand-tight.
8. Backing out gauge #1 while pulling on it, count the number of turns until it
releases from the wing; if gauge #1 turns more than 1 turn before releasing,
remove the wing and destroy it.
9. Slide gauge #2 into the wing; if it enters the wing completely, remove the
wing and destroy it.
10. Dismantle the wing completely.
11. If the wing is an FR design, ensure that the segments and male hub are also
the FR design. Do not use gauges #5 or 6 to inspect FR parts.
12. Using gauge #5, check in three places around the circumference of the
male hub that the hook does not fit; if the hook does fit with the gauge level
with the hub, remove the component from service and repair or replace the
section of the component with the male hub or destroy it.
13. Slide each of the segments through gauge #5 to ensure that there is no
visible clearance on surfaces A or B; if there is any clearance, destroy the
segment.

Figure 1-1: Inspecting the segment using gauge #5.

14. Measure the surface B of all three segments, ensuring that they are the
same height; any differences in heights must be investigated to ensure that
FMC or SPM segments are being used in the respective unions.
15. Screw gauge #3 onto the thread until it is hand-tight.
16. Backing out gauge #3 while pulling on it, count the number of turns until it
releases from the thread; if gauge #3 turns more than 1 turn before releasing,
remove the section of the component with the thread and destroy it.
17. Slide gauge #4 onto the thread; if it slides over the thread to the mark on the
gauge, remove the section of the component with the thread and destroy it.

1.2.3 Sensor inspection

Inline pressure transducers, sensors, or transmitters must be considered as
part of the treating equipment.

Perform the following inspection:

WS Operations Integrity manager\\InTouch content ID# 3313701\1.7\Release Date:05-Aug-2016\EDMS UID: 1651848365\Produced: 05-Aug-2016 20:59:27

• Perform a visual inspection. Identify erosion, corrosion, pitting, or buildup that

may lead to a failure of the component or its seals. If cracks are suspected or
present, remove the component from service and destroy it.
• Verify the tightness of the bolts securing the electronic portion of the sensor
and check for any indication of damage.
• Use gauge 6 per S23P01, InTouch content ID# 3313701, to inspect the male
portion of the union.
• Band and serialize the transducer.

Figure 1-4: Band on pressure transducer housing.

1.2.4 Pressure test

Bull plugs, sensors and sensor wings, and other loose wings must be pressure
tested to the component's rated working pressure. Connections directly attached
to a pump must be pressure tested to the pump's maximum rated working
pressure. Loose union thread halves and male hub halves are not required to
be pressured tested.

Note
FMC manufactures loose wings with a forged-in datecode. When used for
sensors or bullplugs before the expiry date, these wings are not required to have
pressure test according to Well Services QHSE Standard 23, Table 23–5: FMC
Datecoded Wings. However, the use of such a datecoded wing only removes the
annual testing requirement for the wing itself, not for an annual pressure test of
all other parts of the assembly, such as the bullplug, pressure transducer, etc.

1-8 WS S23 G12: Bull Plugs, Sensors, Sensor Wings, and Other Unions / Inspection 1-8
and Test

1. In a pressure test bay or other protected environment, fill the component or

test fixture with water and pressure test it to +/-2.5% of its rated working
pressure for at least 3 minutes.
2. If there are no leaks and the pressure drops off no more than 2.5% of its
rated working pressure within the 3 minutes, the component has passed
the inspection.
WS Operations Integrity manager\\InTouch content ID# 3313701\1.7\Release Date:05-Aug-2016\EDMS UID: 1651848365\Produced: 05-Aug-2016 20:59:27

3. If the pressure decreases from the initial test pressure and stabilizes, the
pressure can be increased one time to reach the rated working pressure.
4. If there are visible leaks or the pressure drops off more than 2.5% of its rated
working pressure within the 3 minutes, release the pressure and return the
component for repair and retesting.

An annual inspection and verification of the calibration of sensors per S04G06,

InTouch content ID# 3313678, is required. The S23G12 pressure test and the
S04G06 annual verification can be performed at the same time at discretion of
the location. Ensure there is a record of the pressure test readings vs output
of the sensor.

1.2.5 Documentation
Documentation must conform to the requirements stated in section 23.8.6 of
Standard 23.

Potential Severity: Catastrophic

Potential Loss: Assets, Personnel, Process, Reputation
