PROBLEM

Health care standards has increased significantly in the Indian subcontinent in last few
decades but people living in rural areas and slums are still living with substandard health
provisions.

Considering Oral Health as one of the important part of healthy living Swades Foundation
took the initiative to educate families and create awareness about oral health care. As bad oral
health leads to respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis, chronic sinus
infections, postnasal drip, diabetes, chronic acid reflux, and liver or kidney problems it is
very important to create the Awareness about the best oral health care practices and
enlightens the various aspects of oral health.

“Oral Health Care Awareness Program” was directed mainly for the children’s of rural area
as they suffer a lot due to lack of awareness, uneducated parents and expensive oral health
and dentistry services in India. Hardly parents care to educate children to brush regularly and
use tooth paste and other healthy practices to stay orally healthy.

OBJECTIVES

1. Create awareness and educate families in rural area regarding oral health awareness.

2. Develop dental programs to reduce vertical transmission of disease.

3. Distribution of toothbrushes and tooth paste to the children of rural area.

SCOPE
1. This report is cover only one rural village in mangaon taluka.

2. It is restricted to children only.


METHODOLOGY

1. Conducted small open seminars in rural area


The seminar was conducted by the team educating children and peoples about
Oral Health. Various tools were used in the process:

a) Dental Chart: A dental chart was displayed and children’s were taught basics of
dentistry. A proper decapitation of knowledge about various kinds of teeth’s and
count was give
b) Brushing Techniques: A proper demonstration of various brushing techniques was
given to all attendees.

2. Group Activities:
a) Quiz on Health and nutrition
There was a list of common nursery level quiz prepared along with general knowledge
question that was being asked to children’s regularly in intervals.

b) Antakshri
To actively engage and amalgamate with the children and connect to them we initiated some
fun loving games like Antakshri

c) Children Games: Rhymes, Counting etc.


Various others games were conducted. This all games were held simultaneously while
helping children’s brush their teeth.
COORDINATION

The whole event was coordinated with the help of elderly members form local families,
Doctors and volunteers from various levels of society. Students from dental colleges were
actively involved in the conduction of the program.

Primary Survey:
Prior to the indulgence our management and team conducted the primary survey checking the
viability of the project. In a period to one week, we got to learn a lot about the oral habits,
Primary survey and reporting was one of the main tool on which the whole project was
architecture.

Event Planning:
Followed by the Primary survey and with the amalgamation of secondary data we started
planning the event and started sketching the layout. Event dates, venue were de999cided and
tools were collected. Event involves oral heath check-up, seminar regarding oral health,
group activities like games, antakshari etc.

Team Management:
The team was constituted on the basis of the response from our social media pages and direct
contacts. Most of the team members were students and doctors from that region. We also
consulted dentists, academicians and our mentors. Two teams were made one doctor team for
oral heath check-up and another one for group activity.
Execution: The event started with seminar, regarding oral health. Guest speaker explain the
importance of oral health. Later we conduct oral heath check-up with the help of our doctor
team. Our doctor team exam people and suggest them required treatment. In order to attract
more number of people we conduct one street play related to importance of oral health. More
we took group activities to involve more children. Later with the help of charts and diagrams
we thought these children how to brush their teeth what will be the benefits of oral health etc.
the program was conclude with distributing tooth brush and tooth pest. The whole project
report defines the whole project in details. From methodology adapted to evaluation, finances
and feedback.

EVALUATION

Response: We received full support with enthusiasm from the society. 35-40children
attended this event along with their family member.

Effective, efficient and equitable use of financial and other resources: As the whole
project was conducted within the range of INR 1000-1200. (as shown in table)

Recognition of actual changes and progress was appreciable

Success factors: Huge no of citizens inhabiting rural area and their willingness to learn and
participate in event.

Need for improvement or where expected outcomes are unrealistic: connectivity to rural
area is big issue. If there adequate connectivity in rural area, Oral Health care Awareness
Program conducted by Swades Foundation will be able to reach all the rural inhabitants and
increase the standards of oral health care to desired level in developing countries like India.

Validation for project staff and partners that desired outcomes are being achieved: Till
date we meet all our desired results with our team.

FEEDBACKS

Oral Health Care Awareness Program-Mangaon conducted by Swades Foundation involved a


core team of 8 individual and other volunteers from various backgrounds and experience.
Doctor member of Foundations formed the most active part as volunteering their hours at
weekend.

Program was a howling success with productive and exciting experience with 40 children
form 20 Families in rural area of Mangaon Taluka.

Further we are plans to conduct similar programs in various other rural areas and if we are
able to generate adequate support we will be conducting it throughout the country.
