LOCALLY MADE INDIGENOUS SUPPLEMENTARY MIXTURE (INSUMIX) AS AN INTERVENTION FOR THE

NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF CHILDREN 6 TO 24 MONTHS OLD OF BARANGAYS SAN JOSE AND DANAO,
SERGIO OSMEŃA, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE.

Background
In The Philippines currently malnutrition rate among less than 2 years Objective
old children is 26.2%. FNRI says lack of access to highly nutritious To determine the effect of
foods is the leading cause. Municipality of Sergio Osmeńa ranks 1st in locally made INSUMIX on the
incidence of malnutrition in Zamboanga del Norte. Survey done on nutritional status of children
November 2016 shows, in barangay San Jose among 42 children aging 6 aged 6 -24 months in Barangay
- 24 month 40% are underweight, 14% are severely underweight, 29% San Jose and Danao, Sergio
are stunted, 50% severely stunted. In barangay Danao among 18 Osmeńa, Zamboanga del
children aging 6 -24 months, 39% are underweight, 4% are severely Norte.

programme from the local government level to address the malnutrition
among 6-24 months old children during the study time.

Methodology
This is a pre and post interventional experimental study. The study was conducted in Barangay San Jose and
Danao, Sergio Osmeńa. The reaponsenta of the study were 6-24 molths old children classified as underweight,
severely underweight, stunted and severely stunted according to WHO standards. Purposive sampling method
with intention to recruit total count of all underweight and stunted children was used.

Conclusion
After daily consumption of INSUMIX for 3 months there was a significant mean weight increase by 1.1 kg and
height by 8.2 cm. 19 out of 27 respondents attained normal weight and 24 out of 44 respondents gained normal
height within the span of 3 months. Given these results it can be concluded that locally made INSUMIX is
effective in improving the nutritional status of children 6 to 24 months old.
