Introduction

Students who are always late in class lose valuable instructions

for themselves, disturb classes, interfere with lessons in progress, and
interrupt other students’ concentration and even those busy teachers
because they have to do their school works such as grades of the students,
lesson plans, parents’ concerns, etc.

Educators agree that prompt and regular school attendance is an

important key to a student’s success. Students should be taught to
demonstrate respect for staff and for peers, and one way to do this is
to practice prompt and regular school attendance.

In 1999-2000 survey, student tardiness and absenteeism were

reported as problems by about 30 percent of public school principals,
at 32 percent and 29 percent, respectively much higher than vandalism,
theft, or student possession of weapons, at 6 percent, 4 percent, and 1
percent.

Punctuality is a trait parents should instill in their children.

Not only will this be valuable during the elementary and secondary school
years, but it will also serve your children well in college and beyond,
when punctuality is up to them alone.

Lateness to school started long ago, every where in a way that cannot
be controlled in recent time. The problem of lateness has eaten deep
into Nigeria children the problem of pupils lateness to school has now
turn to national problem. Lateness merely means arriving after expected
time.

Children commonly miss their school or coming lately because of their

usual habits, such as waking up late due to laziness: rushing of undone
assignment, unprepared bath, breakfast or meals, clothes, their pack
lunch etc. and waiting for companions or friends coming to school the
bus is late; and sometimes because of some problems in their parent that
affects them and interest in coming to school seeing their with
misunderstandings. A financial support is another too. Kids like having
many delightful possessions. They would be and seeing their class mates
with something they don’t have or sometimes they are ashamed of coming
to school.

Oxford advanced learners dictionary defined lateness as arriving after

the expected arrange or usual time. It is after the right, fixed, usual
or expected time; therefore lateness is the opposite of early. The
question now is what are the factors responsible for pupil’s lateness
to school.

Authorities have wonder why scholars come late to school. But they have
not been able to make deep research into this problem in a bid of
providing solutions and recommendation, which would help to cure the
problem.

This study will focus attention on the factors responsible for the
pupil’s lateness and an attempt to finding solution to this problem.

Tardiness and absenteeism are habitually done by most of the students

nowadays. In our school, any students shall be considered habitually
tardy if he/she incurs tardiness, three (3) times a month during the
school year, as well as he/she shall be considered habitually absent if
he/she incurs unauthorized absences not exceeding the allowable three
(3) days in a month without submitting an excuse letter. He/she is
considered excuse if he/she submitted the same on time. Most of the
students incur tardiness if they were not able to wake up early because
they were not able to sleep on time; some were doing a lot of things at
night, especially household chores. Some were having their review late
but mostly keeping themselves busy wasting time in the internet, chatting
with friends, and texting.

There may, on occasion, be an illness or emergency that cause your child

to be late or absent from school. Consequently, they will just take an
absence, so every time they wake up late, they will just take another
absence, and soon to be a habit. Sometimes students absent because they
are afraid of something in school like strict teachers, they do not have
something to be passed on that day, sometimes they absent because they
are tired or do not want to go to school because of nothing.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Lateness among school pupils is increasing and spreading. Everywhere

is a way that cannot be controlled in our societies. A close look at the
factors that are responsible for it, it’s the purpose of the study.
The importance of this can never be over liked in the process of
learning experience had shown that children who are habitual late comer
never do well in their academics, this is true because before their
arrival it is very likely for them missing some steps in the
teaching/learning process. This will affect their learning adversely.
Inspite of the efforts made by the teachers and the school authorities
to solve this problem. The children where still found indulging in late
coming in an attempt to know the factors responsible the teachers
attributed it to the parents while the parents hold the teacher to
ransom. To some others, the children themselves and the peers group
influence are responsible.
With the result of this study, it is believed that solutions to this
problem will be provided as the factors responsible for the lateness are
identified and recommendations are made. The children will be better
guided and ways of overcoming their problems and like up to expectation
as good children are know.
In addition, this study will also help the nation as the children
will now develop the spirit of punctuality at school and becomes good
citizen in their future life.
METHODOLOGY

This chapter illustrates the methods and procedures made by the

researchers.

Research Design

This study is an informative analysis of the performance of

students. The study focuses on the factors affecting the habitual
tardiness of Grade 10 Students of Dumalag Central National High
School.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study are Grade 10 Students from

Dumalag Central National High School.

Research Instruments

One of the most important components of a research design is

the research instrument because it is used to gather and collect
both data and information. These instruments are useful ways of
gathering data. Without them, data would be impossible to put in
hand.

The questionnaire method was used as the primary instrument

in gathering the data that would support the factors affecting the
habitual tardiness and absenteeism of high school study
Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

This chapter presents the summary of the findings of this research,

the conclusions derived from these findings and the researchers’
recommendations for future researches of similar concern.

Summary

This research studied the tardiness of UP Cebu students, the

reasons and factors behind and correlations between course and year
level.

Tardiness

Out of the 40 respondents, 24 of them are tardy. This implies that

60% of the sample is tardy. Furthermore, without considering margin of
errors yet, 60% of the students in UP Cebu are more likely tardy than
punctual.

Reasons

The most common reason ranked by the respondents is “woke up late”,

second is “traffic”, followed by “preoccupied with other works”, then
“no sanction even if late”, next is “boring subject” and lastly, “kind
of teacher".

Respondents who indicated “woke up late” in their reasons answered

additional reasons why. They said they were just too tired and lazy to
go to school early that they end up being late. Others said that they
wake up late in the morning because they slept late the night before.
Some respondents added that they become too complacent with their early
class schedule. Additionally, from the respondents that included
“preoccupied with other works” as one of their reasons for tardiness,
majority of them described these works as academic. Moreover, those who
indicated “boring subject” as one of their reasons for tardiness were
mostly referring to major subjects and subjects inclined to science and
technology. Furthermore, those who chose the “kind of teacher” as a
reason of their tardiness majorly described their teacher as boring. The
study also showed that both the course and year level are not
statistically significant to the tardiness of UP Cebu students. The
course and year level of a student are not significant bases to predict
whether a UP Cebu student will be more or less likely to be
tardy.

Conclusions

The most common reason on why UP students are tardy is that they
wake up late every morning. When UP students are tardy and they find the
subject as an influence, it is more likely that the subject is a major
subject and/or a subject inclined to science and technology.
Additionally, when UP students are tardy and they find the teacher as
the influence, it is more likely that the teacher is boring. Also, when
UP students are tardy because of works and activities, more often that
these works are related to school and academics. Lastly, there
is no correlation between the course of the UP students and their
tardiness. Likewise, there is no correlation between the year level of
UP students and their tardiness. The course and year level of a UP
student are not enough basis to predict whether that student will be
more or less likely to be tardy.

The results demonstrated Watson’s concept of Behaviorism,

which states that any human behavior is a response to external stimuli.
The study showed that the tardiness of UP Cebu students is but a response
to reasons/factors. Moreover, the most common reason that arose, which
showed to be waking up late, coincides with Oghuvbu’s study on Nigerian
students. Lastly, the percentage of tardiness among UP Cebu students was
quite high considering that more than half of the respondents showed
tardiness.

Recommendations

In general, the researchers were confident that the problems

were correspondingly answered with the accuracy and reliability it can
utmost achieve; however, there are still aspects in the research study
that will improve the research and yield more accurate and strong data
and conclusions. The researchers have the following recommendations:

1. The sample respondents were relatively small compared to the whole

population of UP Cebu. Stronger data and conclusions can be derived if
a larger sample will be studied and the margin of error will be at
minimum.

2. It will also be helpful if more reasons are served to the

respondents. This will expose more areas of concern and even reveal more
interesting correlations.

3. The effects of the subject, teacher and untimely works were related
only to the whole sample of respondents. More correlations and findings
can arise if we study these factors per course or year level.

4. A better and well-organized questionnaire will be needed to derive

more accurate answers and responses from the respondents. Some of the
respondents simply put a check mark on the reasons/factors instead of
putting numbers indicating the rank of these reasons/factors. The
researchers selected other respondents to replace the respondents that
answered the questionnaire wrongly.
