Overview of the Button Module
The button module, also referred to as a “sidecar,” allows for 24 additional call appearances
(only 12 displayed per page), which can be used as team buttons or speed dials. Here is a layout
of the button module (with unprogrammed speeddials shown on the screen).

Installing the Button Module
To set up your button module, you need to perform two steps: set your Avaya phone’s power
to high and connect the button module to your phone.

Setting the Phone’s Power to High

To prepare your Avaya 9600 series deskphone to use the button module, you need to
disconnect the phone from power, flip the phone’s power to H/high by flipping the IEEE switch
to H on the back of your phone, and then reconnect power to the phone. If the switch is already
on H/High, then you should reboot the phone by disconnecting and reconnecting the cord in
step 2 and then skip to connecting the button module.

1. Turn your phone around so you’re viewing the back.

2. Power the phone off by removing the Ethernet cord from the uppermost connection port as
shown below. It is the connector labeled with an Ethernet port icon.

3. If your phone stand is blocking the IEEE switch, take note of the way cables are connected
and disconnect them, then remove the stand. If the stand isn’t in the way, skip to the next
step. To remove the stand, grip the phone so that your thumbs are on the part of the stand
that is flush against the phone. Apply pressure with your thumbs while sliding the stand to
the left.

4. At the top back of the phone is a switch labelled IEEE, flip it to the side labelled “H”.

Connecting Your Button Module to Your Phone

1. Plug the connection cord that came with your button module into the port labelled
“MOD” on the back of your Avaya phone.

6|Page
2. Take the opposite end of the cord you just connected and plug it into the back of
your button module in the port labelled with a phone icon.

Note: The remaining MOD port on the back of the button module is used for connecting
additional button modules. To do so, run a cord from the “MOD” port of the button
module you just connected into the port labelled with a phone icon of the next button
module to be connected.

3. If you unplugged other cables, then reconnect them to their original ports. Upon
reconnecting the cords, your Avaya phone and the button module should both
power on. If you aren’t sure how the cords were connected, see What cables go into
the back of my Avaya 9600 series IP phone?

Programming a Speed Dial on Your Button Module
1. Before any speed dials are programmed or call appearances are labeled, your sidecar
will look as follows (note that you may have some team buttons if you requested them).
The “SD” stands for “speed dial”:

2. On your Avaya phone, press the Phone button to view your first page of call
appearances.

3. Scroll down to the third page of call appearances by pressing the Down Arrow of the
navigation wheel twice.

4. Press the Abr Program call appearance button.

5. On the button module, press an SD call appearance button on your button module (you
can choose any of the 24 available to you, unless they are team buttons—remember
that you can press the left or right arrows at the bottom of the button module to see
the other page of 12 call appearances).

Note: If you take too long to select a speed dial, then the speed dial programming mode will time
out, and you will need to start again from step 2.

6. On your Avaya phone, use the dial pad to enter the number for the speed dial.

7. Press the # button to save the speed dial.

8. After about 10 seconds, the speed dial will appear on your button module. You may
repeat steps 5-7 if you want to continue programming speed dials. If you are finished,
press the illuminated Speaker button.

9. To use the speed dial, press the adjacent call appearance button for the speed dial you
want to use.

Adding a Personalized Label to a Speed Dial

The speed dial you added previously will display on your button module as “SD 1XXXX”. If you
want to change the call appearance text into something more meaningful (e.g., the person’s
name for the extension you set as a speed dial), then you will want to add a personalized label.

1. Press the Quick Edit button.

2. On the button module, press the call appearance button for the speed dial you
programmed earlier.

3. On your Avaya phone, use the dial pad to enter a new label. For example, to insert a “c”
you would press the 2 dial pad button three times (notice the scrolling through letters
at the top of your phone screen). To insert a space, you can press 0, and you can also
insert numbers if you’d like to have a person’s name and extension on the label.

4. Press the Save softkey.

5. On your button module, you should see the label applied to the speed dial.

6. Repeat steps 2-4 for each call appearance that you want to relabel. When you are
done, press the Phone button.

7. To use the speed dial with a label, press the adjacent call appearance button.

Team Buttons on the Button Module
Team buttons allow you to speed dial, monitor, or take incoming calls for other lines.

Here is an example of a phone populated with team buttons along with explanations of team
button usage:

To add a team button to your sidecar, your Communications Liaison will submit an ICR
(Interdepartmental Communications Request) identifying your extension as well as the
extension(s) you want to monitor. In the request, be sure to clarify that you want the team
buttons added to a sidecar. If you are not sure of your Communications Liaison, then call 1-
6780.
