Spell Restaurant Group Announces New Executive Chef and
Sous Chef at La Cocina Mexican Grill and Bar
The Spell Restaurant Group recently went on a search for an Executive Chef to take the
reigns at La Cocina Mexican Grill & Bar in Seacrest Beach, FL. They were looking for
someone with great leadership skills and experience in Latin fare that could take it to
another level. They came across Eric Bartholomew from Denver, CO and knew he was the
perfect fit. Eric, his wife Hillary and their three kids, packed their bags and headed to
South Walton. At the same time, they asked John "J.R." McKinny, who was working at
their sister restaurant, Saltwater Grill, to step up as the Sous Chef at La Cocina and he was
thrilled. The Spell Restaurant Group has big plans for La Cocina going forward.
This is the first time this restaurant has had an official chef and sous chef.
They are looking forward to Eric and J.R. working together to put an authentic Latin
inspired spin on the already delicious menu. Special features and more great things to

‘Happenings’ in DeFuniak Springs
Plans Set for Marvel of Flight April 7

for the 7th annual Marvel of
Flight aviation expo scheduled
for Saturday, April 7, 8:30 am
until 4pm at the DeFuniak
Springs Airport, 1931 US
Highway 90 West, DeFuniak
Springs.
Organizers say that families
will see over 100 vintage and modern plane displays, exhibits,
food vendors, crafts and merchandise. A car show, flight and
skydiving demonstrations and live entertainment will
complement the annual event.
Huey helicopter rides and special flight tours will be also
available for a fee.
“We enjoy watching children and their parents marvel at the
unique aircraft on display,” says Airport Director Ryan
Adams. “Our mission is to introduce the world of aviation to
young people and to inspire them to consider a career in
aviation. We also want to introduce pilots to our services and to
let those who want to learn to fly know about the training
opportunities they have available to them at the airport,” says
Adams. “This is a wonderful event for all who share a common
interest in aviation to come together in an enjoyable, family-
friendly environment and to experience a great outing
together.”
Parking and admission is free. Canned goods accepted at the
gate as a contribution to the Matrix Food Bank.

Parish Hall (150 Circle Drive, DeFuniak Springs) you can

Saturday Breakfast. From 7 -11 am food is cooked

scrambled; grits or home fries; sausage or bacon; sausage

When life is a pain in the back
Heavy lifting, repetitive movements and sitting at a desk all
day can take a toll on a person’s back.
Whether it is dull and achy or sharp and stabbing, back pain
can make it hard to concentrate on the job. Unfortunately,
many occupations — such as nursing, construction and
manufacturing work — can place significant demands on a
person’s back. Even routine office work can cause or worsen
back pain.
Many factors can contribute to back pain at work. Exerting
too much force on the back by lifting or moving heavy objects
can cause injury. Repeating certain movements can lead to
muscle fatigue or injury. One’s posture is very important.
Slouching exaggerates the back's natural curves, which can
lead to muscle fatigue and injury.
To help avoid back pain at work, include physical activity
away from the office, maintain a healthy weight to minimize
back strain. For most healthy adults, researchers at the Mayo
Clinic recommend moderate aerobic activity and strength
training exercises two to three times a week. Walking and
swimming also strengthens and stretches back muscles.
At the office, choose a chair that allows both feet to rest flat
on the floor while keeping the knees level with the hips. When
lifting and carrying a heavy object, lift with the knees and
tighten the core muscles. Hold the object close to the body
while maintaining the natural curve of the back. If an object is
too heavy to lift safely, find someone to help.
Avoid unnecessary bending, twisting and reaching and if you
must sit for a prolonged period, change your position
occasionally. Stand up or stretch whenever tired.
Back pain can plague a person’s workdays and keep them
from enjoying life.

kind of person. So, you’d
rather conquer a
problem than cry about it.
After all, crying’s not
going to change anything –
so why do it?
While it’s true that crying isn’t a solution to most
problems, it does have an effect on you and your
relationships. And these changes can help you to
actually make things better. With this in mind, three
significant benefits of crying are:
Crying connects you with your true self: Crying is not
just a by-product of being upset, it’s actually an
expression of your experience. You might be feeling any
number of emotions, such as sadness, hurt, frustration,
anger, or loneliness.
So, if you are unconsciously working to deny or ignore
powerful experiences, sometimes tears can surface some
issues that need addressing. Shedding tears can
reconnect you with your experience of life, with your
true self.
Crying prompts empathy: When you cry in front of
people who care about you, it tends to soften their
feelings toward you and open them to your experience.
They are more likely to respond compassionately, which
can help you by offering validation and support; and that
reaction can strengthen the bond that connects you.
Crying releases tension: Crying is not exactly a
feel-good experience, but it can relieve emotional
tension. So, afterward, you may feel calmer and your
body may feel more relaxed. This change not only feels
good, but it can then free you up to think more clearly
about your situation.
Overall, crying can open you to the above benefits that
being strong had previously kept you from experiencing.
And after you’ve had a “good cry,” you just feel better.

boyfriend’s phone that he was cheating on her. Enraged,
she exploded at him. Then she was angry with herself
because she had been ignoring her suspicions about this

suppressing many negative feelings, such as anger
toward her boyfriend for demeaning her and a sense of

While crying may not change the situation itself, it can
change your experience of it – and that can give you a

What to Do When You
Get Angry - 5 Tips
We’ve all had those moments when we are
so angry that we can barely contain it.
Whether it’s a daily, weekly, or every once in
a while problem, it can help to have a plan at
that very moment. Given that anger turns off
the thinking part of your brain, the plan has
to be simple. So, here it is: Do what you can
to calm down.
Of course, that’s much easier said than done.
So before actually trying to do this, commit
to not making the situation worse. That
means, at the very least, pause before you
speak or act on your anger. As for actually
calming your anger, there are many ways you
can do this. Decide your top one or two go-to
plans before you have the need to use them.
Some ways you might calm your anger are:
Take slow, deep breaths: Breathe in slowly
through your nose until your lungs are at
their full capacity. Then exhale through your
mouth slowly enough that your exhale is
longer than your inhale. Do this five to ten
times.
Walk away: Sometimes the situation is so
triggering that it’s all you can do not to
explode. Then you will likely do best by
walking away. Simply remove yourself from
the situation. You might also put effort into
engaging your mind in something else.
Exercise: This can be extremely helpful in
exerting the energy that comes with rage.
You might also consider doing this when you
are stressed or feel your anger building.
Almost any exercise will do, such as going
for a walk, a run, or lifting weights. You
might even combine this walk away
approach with doing something like taking
your dog for a walk or going on a hike.
Count to ten: Anger, like all emotions, has a
natural life cycle. If you are not feeding your
emotions, they will pass. When you focus on
counting – preferably slowly, it gives the
intensity of your anger a chance to come
down.
Use self-talk: It can help to have a mantra to
repeat to yourself, such as, “this too shall
pass”; “let it go”; or “relax.”
Once you are calm enough to think more
clearly, consider whether this is a situation
that you would be wise to just let go. While it
can be tempting to leave well enough alone,
there are some situations that need attention
or else they will simply return – and possibly
return with a vengeance. If it is important to
address, now is the time to:
Think before you speak or act. If possible,
break the tension with humor.

If you are tired of doing it all (or more than your fair share) in your
relationship, you are not alone. When it comes to this dynamic,
many people harbor annoyance that often grows to frustration and
sometimes to resentment. It can be enough to end relationships, or
kill the heart of them even when couples stay together.
But this imbalance can often be managed, if not totally fixed.
The dream scenario is to sit down with your partner, explain your
observations and frustrations, and then watch them change their
ways. If that works for you, no need to read further. But it’s usually
not this easy. The imbalance is often based in personality styles –
you are generally a more responsible or proactive person. And if
you’re a woman, some of the issue may lie, at least to some degree,
in our society’s deeply rooted traditional expectation that you do
more on the home front.
Still, you can address the problem with your partner and develop a
plan to change the imbalance together:
Identify the problem: Begin by thinking about how this dynamic
evolved into such a problem. Ask yourself what your part might be
in it. For instance, if you tend to like things done the way you like
to do them, your criticisms might have taught your partner to let
you take care of things. Or, if your relationship was always this
unbalanced, you need to ask yourself why you accepted it for so
long; and what has changed that you no longer do.
Next, find a time to talk about this when there is no tension and you
can share your observations dispassionately. Yes, it’s tempting to
avoid rocking the boat when all is well, but the conversation is
much more likely to go well during those times.
Be sure to give your partner a chance to respond. If they agree that
you are unfairly burdened, you can work together to change it.
If not, then it’s important to keep discussing the issue until you
come to some agreement.
Develop a plan: Have some ideas about how you’d like the
responsibilities to be divided, but be open to your partner’s input.
Express appreciation: When your partner shows more initiative,
let them know how much you appreciate it. I’ve found that many
people are hesitant to do this. They think, “Why thank someone for
something they should be doing?” But by recognizing their effort, it
can reinforce their cooperation and encourage them.
Revisit the topic, as needed: Change rarely happens smoothly. So,
when you notice that old patterns are re-emerging, bring it up with
your partner during a calm moment. Share how much you
appreciated the positive

and that you’re concerned

Calls for training by officials in North Carolina after police released video of an officer
punching and choking a black pedestrian have angered the county’s sheriff, who says doing

Three Democratic Buncombe commissioners issued a statement on Tuesday asking to fund
training for all law enforcement within the county, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported.
This comes just one day after officials released a video from 2017 showing Officer Christo-
pher Hickman subduing and punching Johnnie Jermaine Rush, 33, for allegedly jaywalking.
Rush can also be seen screaming in pain after being shocked with a stun gun.
Hickman is facing a felony assault charge.
Commissioners Al Whitesides, Ellen Frost and Jasmine Beach-Ferrara called it “a crisis in
our community,” saying it is “on par with the opioid epidemic.”
But Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan slammed the proposal as driving “a very anti-law
enforcement agenda” and “a slap in the face.”
“I read this statement this morning and was completely disheartened,” he said in statement
shared on Facebook. “Three of my Buncombe County Commissioners … basically told their
Sheriff and their Sheriff’s Office that the hard work we have done over the past twelve years
has counted for nothing.”
Duncan said officials “are taking advantage of this situation” that he says will “impact your
public safety.”
“Instead of addressing the very serious issue and making sure justice is served, they are ap-
plying what they see as the solution to agencies and officers who had absolutely nothing to
do with the Johnny Rush incident.”
The commissioners also are calling for a human rights commission and an independent team
to review body camera footage as a part of their proposal.

time she was just four, her biological mother had proven her-

care of her mother’s

Jason and Holli got married. The Stricklands had three other children but soon came to love
Haleigh like she was one of their own. After several years, they officially adopted her and

received a number of calls over the years regarding Haleigh’s well-being in the Strickland
household. Between 2001 and 2002, they received dozens of calls referencing how much

bruises and looking strangely unkempt next to her cousins. Each time social services
investigated the allegations of abuse, however, Holli said that Haleigh was clumsy and had just
bruised herself and the excuse worked, for a time. On September 11, 2005, 11-year-old
Haleigh was brought to the hospital. Her adoptive parents explained that she had lost
consciousness suddenly, but when the doctors examined her, they found that her brain was

Could enemies sabotage undersea cables linking the world?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Russian ships are skulking around underwater communications cables, causing the
U.S. and its allies to worry the Kremlin might be taking information warfare to new depths.
Is Moscow interested in cutting or tapping the cables? Does it want the West to worry it might? Is there a more
innocent explanation? Unsurprisingly, Russia isn’t saying. But whatever Moscow’s intentions, U.S. and Western
officials are increasingly troubled by their rival’s interest in the 400 fiber-optic cables that carry most of world’s
calls, emails and texts, as well as $10 trillion worth of daily financial transactions.
“We’ve seen activity in the Russian navy, and particularly undersea in their submarine activity, that we haven’t
seen since the ’80s,” Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, commander of the U.S. European Command, told Congress this
month. Without undersea cables, a bank in Asian countries couldn’t send money to Saudi Arabia to pay for oil.
U.S. military leaders would struggle to communicate with troops fighting extremists in Afghanistan and the
Middle East. A student in Europe wouldn’t be able to Skype his parents in the United States.
All this information is transmitted along tiny glass fibers encased in undersea cables that, in some cases, are little
bigger than a garden hose. All told, there are 620,000 miles of fiber-optic cable running under the sea, enough to
loop around the earth nearly 25 times.
Most lines are owned by private telecommunications companies, including giants like Google and Microsoft.
Their locations are easily identified on public maps, with swirling lines that look like spaghetti. While cutting
one cable might have limited impact, severing several simultaneously or at choke points could cause a major
outage. The Russians “are doing their homework and, in the event of a crisis or conflict with them, they might do
rotten things to us,” said Michael Kofman, a Russian military expert at nonprofit research group CNA Corp.
It’s not Moscow’s warfighting ships and submarines that are making NATO and U.S. officials uneasy.
It’s Russia’s Main Directorate of Deep Sea Research, whose specialized surface ships, submarines, underwater
drones and mini subs conduct reconnaissance, underwater salvage and other work.
One ship run by the directorate is the Yantar. It’s a modest, 354-foot oceanographic vessel that holds a crew of
about 60. It most recently was off South America’s coast helping Argentina search for a lost submarine.
Parlamentskaya Gazeta, the Russian parliament’s publication, last October said the Yantar has equipment
“designed for deep-sea tracking” and “connecting to top-secret communication cables.” The publication said that
in September 2015, the Yantar was near Kings Bay, Georgia, home to a U.S. submarine base, “collecting infor-
mation about the equipment on American submarines, including underwater sensors and the unified (U.S. mili-
tary) information network.” Rossiya, a Russian state TV network, has said the Yantar can not only connect to top
-secret cables, but could cut them and “jam underwater sensors with a special system.” There is no hard evidence
that the ship is engaged in nefarious activity, said Steffan Watkins, an information technology security
consultant in Canada tracking the ship. But he wonders what the ship is doing when it’s stopped over critical
cables or when its Automatic Identification System tracking transponder isn’t on.
Of the Yantar’s crew, he said: “I don’t think these are the actual guys who are doing any sabotage. I think
they’re laying the groundwork for future operations.”
Members of Congress are wondering, too.
Rep. Joe Courtney, a Connecticut Democrat on a House subcommittee on sea power, said of the Russians, “The
mere fact that they are clearly tracking the cables and prowling around the cables shows that they are doing
something.” Democratic Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan, an Armed Services Committee member, said Moscow’s
goal appears to be to “disrupt the normal channels of communication and create an environment of
misinformation and distrust.” The Yantar’s movements have previously raised eyebrows.
On Oct. 18, 2016, a Syrian telecom company ordered emergency maintenance to repair a cable in the Mediterra-
nean that provides internet connectivity to several countries, including Syria, Libya and Lebanon. The Yantar
arrived in the area the day before the four-day maintenance began. It left two days before the maintenance ended.
It’s unknown what work it did while there.
Watkins described another episode on Nov. 5, 2016, when a submarine cable linking Persian Gulf nations
experienced outages in Iran. Hours later, the Yantar left Oman and headed to an area about 60 miles west of the
Iranian port city of Bushehr, where the cable runs ashore. Connectivity was restored just hours before the Yantar
arrived on Nov. 9. The boat stayed stationary over the site for several more days.
Undersea cables have been targets before.
At the beginning of World War I, Britain cut a handful of German underwater communications cables and
tapped the rerouted traffic for intelligence. In the Cold War, the U.S. Navy sent American divers deep into the
Sea of Okhotsk off the Russian coast to install a device to record Soviet communications, hoping to learn more
about the USSR’s submarine-launched nuclear capability. More recently, British and American intelligence
agencies have eavesdropped on fiber optic cables, according to documents released by Edward Snowden, a for-
mer National Security Agency contractor.
In 2007, Vietnamese authorities confiscated ships carrying miles of fiber optic cable that thieves salvaged from
the sea for profit. The heist disrupted service for several months. And in 2013, Egyptian officials arrested three
scuba divers off Alexandria for attempting to cut a cable stretching from France to Singapore. Five years on,
questions remain about the attack on a cable responsible for about a third of all internet traffic between Egypt
and Europe. Despite the relatively few publicly known incidents of sabotage, most outages are due to accidents.
Two hundred or so cable-related outages take place each year. Most occur when ship anchors snap cables or
commercial fishing equipment snags the lines. Others break during tsunamis, earthquakes and other natural
disasters. But even accidental cuts can harm U.S. military operations.
In 2008 in Iraq, unmanned U.S. surveillance flights nearly screeched to a halt one day at Balad Air Base not
because of enemy mortar attacks or dusty winds. An anchor had snagged a cable hundreds of miles away from
the base, situated in the “Sunni Triangle” northwest of Baghdad. The severed cable had linked controllers based
in the United States with unmanned aircraft flying intelligence, surveillance and recognizance missions.
