PROJECT TITLE:

FABRICATION OF ELECTRIC ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE

AREA OF RESEARCH:

ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SYSTEMS

MAIN INVESTIGATOR:

Dr. K. BHASKAR & Mr. P. PAVAN

ABSTRACT:

As gas prices fluctuate and environmental concerns continue to be pushed to the forefront,
we hear more and more about electric ATVs. For most of us, however, electric off-road vehicles
are still part of the great unknown. We know they exist, but don’t really know much about them.
Most electric vehicles share a few common features and tendencies. First off, they are almost
completely silent. This can be a little strange at first, as all you really hear is the sound of the tires
on the trail and a quiet hum from the electric motor, but you do get used to it. Another common
trait pf electric ATVS is torque. Electric motors have 100 percent of their torque available
immediately, so getting up to speed from idle happens very quickly. Horsepower generally peters
out quickly, however.

Maintenance is usually inexpensive, at least according to the folks that build them – we’ve never
had one for a long-term test so we’ll have to take their word for it. Electric motors have fewer
moving parts than conventional gas motors, which means fewer parts to wear out. You also spend
less money to run them as a full charge adds pennies to your energy bill, compared to whatever
you have to pay to fill up at the pump. Additionally, spark plugs, along with oil, air, and fuel filters
are all non-existent, so you never have to replace them.

The biggest concern most people have with electric ATVs is battery life. If you drive aggressively,
batteries will drain in big hurry. To help combat this, some vehicles come with several drive modes
that limit to varying degrees how fast the unit can go. Batteries are also heavy, so electric ATVs
weigh a fair bit more than their gas-powered counterparts. Also, batteries wear out over time and
replacing them can be quite expensive. Electric vehicle manufacturers, however, counter that the
money you save on gas and service should more or less cover the cost.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROECT:

The name itself specifies that it is an All-Terrain Vehicle, meaning it can be driven almost
on all surfaces including concrete roads, desert areas, rugged terrain, grasslands, etc. ATV’s are
designed to handle all types of roads and their problems like bumps, dips, hills, etc. They are
designed to give the convenience of driving around everywhere and reaching even remotest areas
inaccessible by other vehicles, which is their best benefit.

ATV’s are the popular vehicles of choice when the target is to have an adventurous ride that is fun
while being safe. They can be bought from a number of places, and thus thrill seekers have easy
access to these vehicles.

Those who prefer rides of the two wheeled variety will revel in the additional security given by
ATV’s as the varied driving experience makes it an appealing choice for exploration and
adventure, and those who prefer cars will enjoy the strong yet open ATV form and structure and
its versatility to handle terrains of all kinds.

ATV’s are built for resistance to various road stresses, and hence have tough bodies designed to
work well on rough, mountainous ranges as well as smooth roads. Border Patrolling, Farming, and
other agricultural activities benefit greatly from ATV’s and their tough, versatile and rugged
mechanisms.

ADVANTAGES:

 EVs better known as electric vehicles are pollution free. They run on batteries that are
powered through electricity.

 The engines convert almost the entire chemical energy of the batteries into motion as
opposed to the 20% of fuel energy converted by IC engines.

 These electrical motors offer a smooth and soundless operation. The acceleration is
strong and overall maintenance charges are low.

 These vehicles including the electric powered ATVs have a life cycle at the end of which
they need to be disposed. The battery is fully recyclable and can be reused as well.

CONCLUSION:

 The electric all-terrain vehicle was fabricated successfully and it has performed well in the
basic testing and has endured its maximum range.

 The overall of the vehicle is has been brought down to 283 kg.

 The vehicle has better acceleration compared to the previous version with a top speed of
46 kmph and a range of 100 km.
