EXAMPLES AND TUTORIALS
Question 1
Figure Q1 shows a floor plan where the
slabs are supported on beam AB, CD and
EF. Both slabs are designed as one-way
spanning and carrying a uniformly
distributed load design load of 5 kN/m2.
Ignoring the self-weight of the beam,
calculate the total load for beam AB, CD
and ED.

Answer:
Beam AB = 100 kN
Beam CD = 160 kN
Beam EF = 60 kN

EXAMPLES AND TUTORIALS
Question 2
Figure Q2 shows a floor plan where the
secondary beam is placed between beam
AB and CD. Given the uniformly
distributed load shown in the figure, find
the total load carried by beam AC, BD, EF,
and GH. Ignore self-weight of the beam.

Answer:
Beam AB = 50 kN
Beam BD = 50 kN
Beam EF = 60 kN
Beam GH = 100 kN
Beam CD = 160 kN

EXAMPLES AND TUTORIALS
Question 3
Figure Q3 shows a floor plan of a steel building.
The floor consists of precast concrete holow core
slabs. Loads are carried by the slab are as follows:

Unfactored dead load from selfweight of precast

slabs, selfweight of steel beams and finishing
= 5.0 kN/m2

Unfactored imposed load

= 4.0 kN/m2

Determine the maximum shear force and

moment in beam 1/A-B

Answer:
VEd = 63.75 kN
MEd = 79.7 kNm Figure Q3

EXAMPLES AND TUTORIALS
Question 4
Figure Q4 below outlines the structural plan for the roof of a single storey
building. The permanent (dead) load from the roof slab is 2.5 kN/m2 and the
variable imposed load is 1.5 kN/m2. Simple beam-to-beam and beam-to-
column connections may be assumed. For the unfactored self-weight of the
beams, assume 0.4 kN/m for the secondary beams, and 0.8 kN/m for the
primary beams. The height of the columns is 4.5 m. Use grade S275 steel.

a) Calculate the design loads on beams B1, B2, B3, and B4, and the end of the
reactions.
b) Calculate the design loads applied to columns C1, C2, C3, and C4.

Question 5
Figure Q5 shows a floor plan with two-
way spanning at the slabs. Calculate the
total load carrying by Beam AB, AC, BD,
CE, DF and EF. Ignore self-weight of the
beam.

Answer:
Beam AB = 68.75 kN
Beam AC = 31.25 kN
Beam BD = 31.25 kN
Beam CE = 11.25 kN
Beam DF = 11.25 kN
Beam EF = 48.75 kN

Question 6
Figure Q6 shows a floor plan with one-
way and two-way spanning. Show in a
diagram the type of loading and its
values carried by each beams shown in
the plan.

Answer:
Each answer should be presented in a diagram. The
answer is described as follows:
• Beam CE, DF, GH and IJ are carrying UDL of 15 kN.
• Beam EF carrying point load 7.5 kN at 2.0 m and 6.0
m from E, and UDL load 30 kN from H to J.
• Beam CD is carrying end reactions from beams GH
and IJ with 7.5 kN, UDL load of 30 kN at GI, and
trapezoidal load of 68.75 kN at AB.

Question 7
Figure Q7a shows a floor plan carrying characteristic permanent action (gk) and
variable action (qk) of 5.0 kN/m2 and 7.5 kN/m2. By ignoring the self-weight of
the beam,

a) Determine the loads carried by beam BE by indicating it on Figure Q7b.

b) Determine its maximum shear force and maximum bending moment.

Answer:
a) P1 = 411.4 kN, P2 = 57.1 kN, P3 = 42.8 kN, P4 = 57.1 kN, P5 = 411.4 kN, P6 =
430.2 kN, d1 = 5.658 m, d2 = 2.50 m, d3 = 3.0 m, d4 = 2.50 m, d5 = 5.658 m.
b) Vmax = 705 kN, Mmax = 4636 kNm.
