READINESS
I. Goal(s)/Objective(s)/Standard(s)
A. Goal– Students will understand how to make healthy decisions regarding the food they eat daily.

B. Objective(s) – After completing the activity, students will be able to discern which food items are
healthy or unhealthy.

C. Standard(s):
IAS: K.7.1 Identify healthy behaviors to improve personal health and wellness.
ISTE: 3.a. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and
to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
II. Materials & Management:

A. Materials: Enough food to pass out to each student (strawberries, grapes, carrots), white board,
computer, pictures of healthy & unhealthy foods, Healthy/Unhealthy food quiz video
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnfTHsdTodA), worksheets for independent practice
B. Time: 45 min
C. Space: Students are in desks majority of lesson, some coming to carpet for sorting activity.
D. Behavior: class dojo monster points, I will be handing out extra fruit/veggie snacks to students on
their best behavior-looking for good listeners and cooperative learners.
E. Technology: computer for video and showing unhealthy pictures.

III. Anticipatory Set—We all have favorite foods, don’t we? Food we really love to eat and when we get that
chance to have it we feel really happy, right? What are some of your guys’ favorite foods? Call on five to six
students to answer. Those all sound tasty, my favorite food is hamburgers, I just love them! But, it is so
important to remember that some foods are considered healthy for our bodies and some of them are not. The
foods that we have talked about so far, do we think they are healthy or not healthy? Call on a few students.
Yeah, so some of the foods were unhealthy, and those foods are okay to have sometimes but it is important to
remember how beneficial healthy foods are. So, who has eaten something healthy so far today? Would you like
to share? Call on a few students that raised their hands. Wow, good job, those sound very good, and I want the
rest of you to be thinking about the different foods that you normally eat throughout a day and how you might
make healthier choices.

IV. Purpose: Today we are going to be talking about healthy versus unhealthy foods and what they might do to
our bodies. Healthy foods will help better your life and keep you active and engaged throughout the day.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION

V. Adaptation: (ACEI 3.2)

A. Remediation – If students finish any task early give them more pictures to sort through to identify
healthy and unhealthy foods.
B. Exceptional Needs- Allow wait-time for students who have trouble processing auditory information
slowly, be patient. Possibly re-ask the questions, and re-tell the instructions.
VI. Lesson Presentation

Input Modeling/Modeled Practice – I brought in some tasty treats for us to try today and I would like you all
to eat these healthy snacks and then tell me why you think they might be healthy. Pass out a few strawberries,
grapes, and carrots to each student. While they are eating pull up a few pictures of unhealthy foods for them all
to see (French fries, cake, burgers, poptarts, etc.) and explain why they are unhealthy. A lot of these foods are
unhealthy for us because they make us weaker and our bodies do not respond well to them when we eat them.
Unhealthy foods that are really high in fat and sugar make our bodies sad and we cannot function as well as we
could if we were to eat healthier options. So now that we have eaten some of our snack, do you have any idea
why these fruits and vegetables are considered healthy? Call on 2-3 students. So, healthy foods, like fruits and
vegetables are great because they make our bodies and our minds stronger. Healthy foods boost our energy and
give us all the nutrients we need. There are a lot more healthy food options besides fruits and vegetables, can
anyone give me more examples of healthy foods? Call on 2-3 students. Yeah, we can have chicken, eggs, salad,
and so much more.

Checking Understanding – I will be continually checking for student understanding by asking questions
throughout the lesson, walking around the room checking on their worksheets, and answering any questions
they have. I will make sure they are active listeners while I am explaining by calling on those who are doing
well throughout. I will ensure that the students are engaged by discussing things they can relate to.

Guided Practice – Now that we know some of the benefits and examples of healthy foods, let’s try and sort
them into their correct place. I have pictures of healthy and non-healthy foods and I want us all to try and put
them where they are supposed to go. Have a chart on the white board with sections labeled “Healthy &
Unhealthy” then provide a variety of pictures so kids can see the various options to each category. Call up
students who are ready and listening well to come sort pictures with me and the class. Make sure each student is
attentive and listening to where each food is being sorted. Good job class, you really seem to know your healthy
versus unhealthy foods. I like how much you guys are learning. Next, we are going to be working on a
worksheet to show that you can really find the healthy foods!

A. (ACEI 2.4 & ACEI 3.3)

Independent Practice – I will be handing each of you a coloring worksheet with pictures of foods on them, I
want you to color ONLY the healthy foods. Color really nicely, then turn it over on the back and you have to
circle all the fruits red and all the vegetables green. Scaffold what they are supposed to do on the document
camera. If you have any questions raise your hand and wait for me or Miss Carder to come help. Allow time for
students to complete worksheet activities. Okay I want you all to finish up your work and put them in the
finished baskets, if you did not finish that is okay, you can work on them later or take them home to finish up.

Closure – Now that we have learned all about healthy and unhealthy foods we are going to try doing a little
game to try and see if you guys can spot the healthy versus unhealthy food items they give. So, let’s try that now.
You guys can yell out your answers and I will be listening for correct repsonses. Play the Healthy Unhealthy
Food Quiz on Youtube. Wow, good job guys! I hope you learned so much today and will change some of your
eating habits to healthier choices! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnfTHsdTodA)

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT (ACEI 4.0)

Formative: Walk around while students work checking for completion and understanding of the task. Closure
questions will give me an idea for what they have learned and how I could improve in the lesson next time.
Summative: Ask students in a few days about the things they have been doing to eat healthier rather than non-
healthy foods.
REFLECTION AND POST-LESSON ANALYSIS

1. How many students achieved the lesson objective(s)? For those who did not, why not?
2. What were my strengths and weaknesses?
3. How should I alter this lesson?
4. How would I pace it differently?
5. Were all students actively participating? If not, why not?
6. What adjustments did I make to reach varied learning styles and ability levels?
a. Bloom’s Taxonomy
b. Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences
7. Did the student accurately understand the differences between healthy and non-healthy foods?
8. Was there enough support for learning?
9. How did the students do with the mostly independent work?
