THE BACKDROP :
We live in interesting times. Our social lives and every facet of business is driven by a digitally tuned world. If
Facebook, with two-billion users, were to be a country, it would be the most populous nation on earth. Uber is
valued more than GM and Ford combined and yet doesn’t own a single vehicle. Without possessing a single
room, Airbnb is worth more than the 100-year old Hilton. Apple does not own a single factory and yet is the
most valuable company on earth. Digitally-enabled Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft are the
most valuable companies today. Whatsapp, a company with 450 employees, was bought for a stratospheric $19
billion. Welcome to a heady digital world!

Clearly, India has been morphing into a digitally savvy nation. India has been going through significant digital
transformation. The identity-establishing Aadhar is a
unique example of empowering citizens of the country
through technology. The inclusive vision of the government
has manifested through Jan Dhan which empowers the
economically weaker sections of the society. The Smart City
initiative is likely to change the face of our metropolis. With
states vying with each other in the race to digitalization of E-Governance, the country’s landscape will
radically alter. With this clear vision, the present government is pushing ahead with the Digital India initiative
to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and a knowledge infused economy.
