Professional nursing meeting experience (4 hours)

Guide for Reflection Using Tanner’s (2006) Clinical Judgment Model
Introduction

What professional nursing meeting(s) did you attend and where was it located?
 The meetings I attended were the CVAS March Editions. It was three different phone meetings. The first
was regarding the lab, second was Cardio Vascular Interventional Radiology, and third about the OR.
Although it was over the phone, there were members sitting together in conference rooms in hospitals
throughout Richmond and in South Carolina.
Background

Describe the purpose of this professional nursing meeting? Describe the agendas of the group and subgroup. What
type of issues did they address?

 These monthly meetings are held to keep all of the hospitals on the same track. If a new product was
introduced in their units, they have had a month to test it out and can give us their evaluations. They are
able to report the pros and cons and determine if it is something they really need on the unit. Then,
members in the meetings in charge of the financial aspects would give us their input. They would say if it is
financially smart to invest in this product or if we should go with a different vendor that has products with
the same concepts. In these meetings, the members can also propose new ideas or new products they
would like to test out.

Noticing

What did you notice about the professional nursing meeting initially? Describe what you saw, heard and did during
the meeting?

 I thought this meeting was very innovative. There were members from all different hospitals, such as SMH,
SFMC, Mary Immaculate Hospital, and MRMC. There were also representatives from hospitals in
Kentucky, Baltimore, and South Carolina. Since it was a phone call meeting, it was very convenient and
easy members to attend. In addition to the phone call, there was also a link to the online presentations so all
members can follow along. During the meeting, I sat, listened, and took notes on information that I found
helpful or interesting.

Interpreting

Describe what you thought about the information being discussed. Have you been involved in similar discussion
during your previous student nurse experiences? Describe the similarities and/or differences to those encounters.

 Since I am on the ortho unit at SMH, the Cardio Vascular meeting was the one that stood out to me the
most. The presentation was based on the product, DuoDerm. This product is something I constantly use on
the unit so learning about the history and how it came into the hospital was very interesting. The presenter
talked about other products similar to the DuoDerm, but DuoDerm was found to have has far less adverse
events than the other products. I have been in similar situations because nurses on my unit have asked me
about this product. I have given them my opinions, and they took it into consideration. In the meetings, the
members are encouraged to give their evaluations and input.

Responding

Describe stresses (both positive & negative) you experienced as you responded to the new learning or the challenge.

 A positive was that the meetings were very informative. Although the members are all scattered, it was
great to see that they are still able to collaborate and work together no matter where they are. No matter
where they are, they are all kept up to date regarding events and problems in the different hospitals. They
respected each other and were very professional in giving their opinion. A negative was that it was hard to
follow along because I did not know who was who. Different people would chime in, but I had no idea
what department they were from.

Reflection-in-Action

What role would you take being assigned to represent your unit in this group? What subcommittee would you like to
participate with and why?

 If I were to represent my unit, I would inform the group about the pros and cons regarding the product that
was mentioned in the meeting. DuoDerm is a popular item used on the ortho unit so I would speak on
behalf of my staff about the effectiveness of this product. I would like to participate with other charge
nurses on different units compare their experiences to ours.

Reflection-on-Action and Clinical Learning

What written evidence is available to support professional nursing groups and their impact on the development of
evidence based practice and improved patient outcomes. Cite/reference all journal articles that contributed to the
evidence.
 According to Masella, Balent, Carlson, Lee & Pierce (2014), “DuoDERM tended to outperform all
dressings in reepithelialization at 3 days, while Xeroform was least expensive, easy to use, and
demonstrated rapid reepithelialization.”

What is the value of professional nursing meetings both as a part of a healthcare system and within a professional
organization?
 These meetings provide information and education to all healthcare members. No matter where the
members are or what hospital they reside in, promoting positive outcomes in patient care should be our
focus. In order to do that, it takes trial and error and in these meetings, each individual has the opportunity
to speak up and explain what works and what doesn’t. From there, we are able to formulate and plan a plan
of care for the units.
Describe any changes in your values or feelings as a result of this experience.

 My values or feelings did not necessary charge as a result of this experience, but it gave me an insight for
the future. Our hospitals are becoming very innovative and use time effectively. Instead of making all
members physically come and attend a meeting, they are able to attend with just a phone and a computer.
