4.2.2.1 Buckv Interface (Fioure4-11)

The Buckyoperatesas a peripheraldeviceto the Microprocessor

in the mammography
unit.The Microprocessor
acquiresstatussignalsfromthe Bucky,andsuppliesit with115
volt DC operatingpower and an analog Bucky drive signal. The followingstatus
information
is sensedby the Microprocessor.

A. Presence

B. GridHomePosition

c. Grid End Position

The analog drive signal suppliedto the Bucky by the Microprocessor

has two
thatcontrolgrid motion:
characteristics

A. Polarity- positivevoltagemovesgrid towardHomeposition;negativevoltage

towardsEndposition.

B. Amplitude- voltageapplied(absolutevalue)determinesgrid velocityin the

directionspecifiedby its polarity.

The BuckyDriverPC Board,locatedinsidethe Buckycase,providesdrivepowerto the

motorthroughan amplifier consisting
of op-ampU1.The BuckyDriverboardreceives the
+ and- 15 voltD.C.operating powerfromthe mammography unit.The DriverBoardalso
containstwoopticalswitches thatgenerateactivelowelectrical
statussignalswheneither
by a plateon thegridcarriage.
is interrupted Oneof the opticalswitches(U3)is actuated
when the grid is at its "HOME" position,
the other(U2)whenthe grid is at the "END'
position.Thesignals,"HOME"and"END",arepassedto the Buckycontrolcircuitryin the
mammography unit.

The U1 BuckyDriveramplifieris suppliedthe analogdrivesignalthroughpotentiometer

4.2.2.2 BuckvCvcle

A. PresenceDetection

Presence of the Buckyon the mammography unitis senseddifferently, depending

on the unit.Inthe M-lll,theAccessory Detectioncircuitnotifiesthe Microprocessor
thatthe Buckypatternhasbeenoptically sensedby the detectorunitin the image
receptortray.In mammography unitswithoutAccessory Detection capability,
the
Homeand Endsignalsare examined. Boththe Homeand Endsignalsare active
low.Whenthe gridis at the Homeposition, the Homepositionelectrical signalis
at "0",whilethe Endpositionsignalis at "1".Whenthegridis at the Endposition,
the End positionsignalis at "0" and the Homesignalat "1". Whenthe grid is
betweenHomeand End,both signalsare at "1". Mammography unitswithout
AccessoryDetectcapability lookfor one or bothsignalsto be "1" to indicatethe
presenceof the Bucky.

B. DriveHome

The Buckycontrolportionof the system'soperatingprogramwill not allowan

exposureif Buckypresenceis sensedand the grid is not sensedat the Home
positionwhenan exposure is initiated.
Sucha condition
willgenerate
a Buckyfault
(indicatedby screentext on the M-lll, and by ErrorCode 07 on other units).
Therefore, after Buckypresenceis sensed, the statusof the Homesignalis
sensed.lf the Homesignalis not at "0", the systemgeneratesthe appropriate
Buckydrivesignalto movethe gridtowardthe Homeposition.A smallpositive
offsetvoltageis continually
appliedwhenthe Buckyis idleto preventthegridfrom
creepingawayfromthe Homepositiondue to gravity.

C. Exposure

Whenan exposureis initiated,

the Buckydriveanalogsignalis switchedto its
maximum negativevalue, which moves the grid at maximum velocity,
approximately
200 millisecondsbeforex-ray emissionbegins.This velocityis
maintained
forapproximately (200milliseconds
300milliseconds pre-emission;100
milliseconds
duringemission).

By thistime, the Microprocessor hasdetermined the exposuretime, basedon the

exposuremodeandtheimagereceptor tray'sAutomatic Exposure Controlsensor.
The Microprocessor sendsdata to its on-boarddigitalto analogconverterthat

Duringtheremainder of theexposure,the Microprocessor cyclesthroughchecking
for a transition
of the Endsignal,indicating thatthe Buckyhasgonefartherthan

D. PostExposure

Afterthe exposure,
the Microprocessor reversesthe gridto returnit
automatically
to the Homeposition.

4.2.3 Auto-ApertureDetectBoard (Figure4-12)

The Auto-Apertureboard,whichis housedwithinthe beamlimitingassembly,servestwo

purposes:it relaysthe statusof the beam limitingcomponents, and it controlsthe

lf the statusof APINandAPOUTindicates thatthe currentpositionof the smallaperture

6.1 GENERALINFORMATION

Becausethe technologist usesthe lightfieldto collimate

the x-raybeam,it is important
thatthe
bordersof the lightfieldcoincidewiththe bordersof the x-raybeam.

The x-ray beam bordersare controlledby the apertureused and the positionof the single
collimatorblade.Aperturesare suppliedto correspondwith focal spot size and cassettesize.
Threeaperturesare usedwiththe M-lll unit:the 18 x24/24 x 30 centimeter auto-aperture,
the
D-shapedspotaperture,andthe coned-down aperture.

LightFieldbordersare controlled in the samemanneras the x-raybeam- by the apertureand

by the positionof the adjustable
