Critical Thinking and Expression

Being able to objectively analyze and evaluate a certain issue in order to form a judgment

is an important skill to acquire in life. This is critical thinking and is something that I have been

able to grow in over my years at Brigham Young University in the Spanish major. Being able to

think critically is important but also being able to express those judgments made through the

research process is just as vital. For the argumentative essay requirement, I decided to upload a

paper that I wrote about the injustices found in the short story Paco Yunque which was written

by the Peruvian author César Vallejo. In this paper, I proposed that the social injustice in the

world leads to bullying, which was present in Paco Yunque. In the paper, I analyzed the history

of bullying and social injustice and cited many works to prove my point to be true.

The next section of critical thinking and expression was the research paper and I chose a

paper that I wrote about Pachuco Spanish. This is a form of Spanish that is present in Mexico. In

this essay, I researched the history of the Pachuco Spanish such as where it came from and some

of the expressions that come from this area of Mexico. In the process of writing this paper, I had

to do a significant amount of research to be able to understand the topic and be able to create an

organized conceptual paper. I cited many sources that I found by doing research in the library.

Throughout this process, I had to think critically and then I had to gather all the information I

learned and had to express it all in a cohesive way.

Throughout my time in the Spanish major, I have been able to improve my quality of

thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing the knowledge I have received.

This is a skill that will help me throughout my life. I plan on continuing my education after

graduation and pursuing a Master of Healthcare Administration. The skills that I have learned

and acquired throughout my time at Brigham Young University will help me as I pursue higher
education. There will be times throughout my career that I will have to solve a healthcare

problem and it will require me to think critically through all the possible answers and problems

to be able to come up with the best solution. I will continue my mastery of critical thinking as I

finish at BYU because it will help me to be a better professional. I can continue to practice by

looking at problems and searching for ways to solve these problems.
