Introduction

What is Mechanics of Materials ?

Branch of Mechanics which studies how structures behave
under mechanical loading

Structures: bridges, airplane wings, ships, pipe systems, cranes,

offshore oil rig, pressure vessels, shafts, muscle, thigh bone, …
Behavior: stress, strain, deformation, deflection, displacement,
vibration, fracture, damage, …
Loading: static, dynamic, axial, torsion, bending, shear, …

Introduction

Why study Mechanics of Materials ?

Providing future engineers with the means to analyze and to
design various machines and load-bearing structures so that
failure will not occur

Historical development
Dates back to the beginning of 17th century when Galileo
studied the effect of loads on rod and beams made of various
materials
Further development of experimental and theoretical studies
mainly in France by Saint-Venant, Poisson, Lamé and Navier in
the beginning of 18th century

Review of Stress and Strain

Definition of Strain

A measure of the shape change in materials due to

external loads. It relates the geometry of materials
after and before loading
Normal strain: due to normal stress
Shear strain: due to shear stress

KIG 1007 Mechanics of Materials 1 Assoc. Prof. Dr. A. Andriyana

Review of Stress and Strain

Definition of Stress

A measure of the average amount of force exerted per

unit area of a surface within a deformable body

Normal stress: force perpendicular to the surface

Shear stress: force parallel to the surface

Engineering stress: force per unit area of initial surface

True stress: force per unit area of current surface
