My Mentor
My mentor’s name is Valerie

Has a bachelors in nursing and
has been a nurse for over 20
years
Works in the NICU at Clear Lake
Regional Medical Center
What is ISM?
ISM is an advanced Course
course designed for Requirements
students wishing to
 Document a minimum of 3 hours
mentor an adult of mentorship each week
professional in a chosen  Complete a journal each week
course documenting mentorship
experiences
 Complete an ISM professional
portfolio, a mid-term presentation,
and all of the required
assignments
 Create a product and a
presentation at the professional
level and present to a panel of
graders
Project
 Project topic: Gastroschisis
 This is when the baby is born with its intestines outside of it’s body.
 I chose to do Gastroschisis because I find it interesting how this happens
and also how often common this is.
Key Points
 Causes of gastroschisis

 Treatment for gastroschisis

 Recovery after treatments

 How often is gastroschisis seen

 How and when this is diagnosed

 How gastroschisis affects the

baby in the future
Current Event
Baby girl born with her bowel OUTSIDE her tummy survives after
two-year wait for op to put it back in place
 The article explains how this young girl was born with
gastroschisis. Normally the intestines are put back into the
body right away, but with her they waited 2 years to
operate. She spent a lot of time in the hospital, even when
she was older. She continues to have surgeries even at the
age of 8. She received a cosmetic operation. They had to
put her into an induced coma to let her body heal. She still
has to regularly go to the hospital for check ups.
 This connects to my project by showing how gastroschisis
can affect the baby in the future. Even 6 years after the
operation was done to put her intestines back into her
body, she stills continues to receive surgery due to the
gastroschisis. She also continues to spend a lot of her time
in the hospital.
Research
Things I will need to research:
 Why Gastroschisis happens
 What are the long term and short term effects on the baby
 What are the treatment methods
Product
Educational booklet
 Explains what Gastroschisis is and why it happens, the
effects it has on the baby, and treatment methods
 My product will be similar to the one I made last
semester just with different information
Conclusion
 I hope to that I get to see a baby with Gastroschisis and see how it is
treated so that I am able to learn more about it. I also hope that this project
will help me understand why this happens.
I would like to thank…
Valerie for being my mentor and
teaching me throughout this semester
My evaluators for taking time and
coming to my presentation
Mrs. Click for choosing me to be in this
class and giving me this opportunity
My Mom and Dad for helping through
this process
