Designing Combinational Logic Circuit using Karnaugh Mapping

Introduction
In this activity you will learn how to utilize the Karnaugh mapping technique to simplify two,
three, and four variable logic expressions. Additionally, logic expressions containing don’t
care conditions will be simplified using the K-Mapping process.

Equipment
 Paper and pencil
Procedure

Perform all necessary tasks.

Design Problem 1:
Date of Birth

Suppose you want to design a display of your birthday. Using a seven-segment display
determine the truth table that represents the output (logic 1) for each of the labeled LED’s.
Note that by flipping the switches x, y, and z your date of your birth should display – including
the dash marks in between month, day, and year.

Truth Table

Boolean Expressions

Now write a Boolean function for each of the LED’s (i.e. A= xyz + ….; B=xyz + …).

Un-simplified: Simplified:

A = _________________________________ A = ___________________________________

B = _________________________________ B = __________________________________

C = _________________________________ C = __________________________________

D = _________________________________ D = __________________________________

E = _________________________________ E = __________________________________

F = ________________________________ F = ___________________________________

G = ________________________________ G = ___________________________________

Design Problem 2:

Every five years the dentist recommends that

you have a-rays taken of your teeth.
Although the dental hygienist is thoroughly
trained in administering these x-rays an alarm
system is put in place so as to prevent
accidental radiation exposure. There are
several switches in place that will trigger an
alarm indicating a possibly unsafe situation.

A Door used to be the only protection that

the dental hygienists had between them and
the radiation. I recent years technology has
rendered the door switch obsolete.

Protection must be worn by the patient this is often a lead blanket. A switch is in place to
determine whether or not the blanket is in use.

The x-ray Camera must be in an extended and locked position. A switch is connected to the
locking mechanism.

The Button used to capture the x-ray images must be pressed in order for the x-ray machine to
work properly.

Design a AOI circuit that will trigger the alarm if any of the above “unsafe” situation occur.
