The controller box holds two AA alkaline or
rechargeable batteries. NEVER USE COMMON
CARBON BATTERIES, as they may release dam-
aging acid and void the warranty.
Replace the AA batteries when the battey level

eyepiece will automatically turn off when the
voltage is too low.

Shooting handheld or with a stand Self practice

Photographing one’s own iris in front of a

mirror is the best practice for a beginner. The
camera display image reflected in the mirror
allows for a precise framing putting the pupil

Iris shooting sequence
The IRISO lighting system incorporates 4
peripheral LED lights. Those can be com-
bined by opposing pair or individually lit.
Unlike frontal lighting, they do not hurt the
eye or damage the retina and give a better
apreciation of fiber texture and lacunas.
The two basic shots:
vertical and horizontal pairs
The minimum material to shoot of an iris
are those using horizontal and vertical
light pairs. The illumination is uniform
across the eye, and no area remain
unknown due to reflections.
Individual lights for texture and detail
Individual lights enhance fiber details and
moving shadows give important clues:
- tissues raised or sunk get accentuated
under a light crossing at a 90º angle
- the bottom of a lesion is better appreci-
ated if the light path is aligned and deeply
penetrates into it
- some discrete pigmentation spots as well
as textures in the absorption ring are only
perceived under certain light angles
- milky areas show their underlying details
under sideway lighting
These differences are valuable tools to
study aspects easily set aside for a lack of
information, and are the reason for shoot-
ing the full six pictures study of every iris

Comparing details in pictures
To ease comparing a same area in differ-
ent pictures, it is recommended to always
center the pupil into the central focusing
rectangle and keep the camera level with
both eyes’ axis. The resulting sequence
will look like the one shown on these
pages
Microscopic detail
The view on the left is an enlargement of
the previous full iris photograph. The
sharpness and detail richness results
from applying the "Advanced Techniques"
described page 16. Those increase
definition down to a microscopic level.
Identifying the patient
Prior to recording the irises, it is advis-
able to photograph the patient’s face, as
much to identify the person as to keep a
record of the general appearance. Doing
it in a cold manner will prevent a typical
portrait smile and also register the mood.
Select the “Auto” mode, slightly zoom the
lens and take the picture of the face.
Remember to set the camera back to “P”
mode to photograph the iris.

Advanced techniques
• The following techniques are intended to record
significantly sharper pictures.
- Increase the file parameters
Press the " FUNC.SET " button (1), find the "My
Colors " symbol and change to

A precise parallelism of the camera’s with the eyes’
axis ensures sharpness on the iris from side to side.
- Keep light on high, lower only with sensitive eyes

light to medium color, ISO 200 for dark eyes.Caution:
camera may be more sensitive to hand shake.
(3) - Avoid movements
The IRISO Table Stand will eliminates camera shake,
and have the patient look at a specific spot to minimize
eye movements.
- Multiple shots
This technique significantly improves picture sharp-
ness. (4) Press below “FUNC.SET” and select ,
Press “Menu” to program the values "0 sec./ 3 shots".
The option is automatically reset to off and should

After taking the identical 3 shots in a row, display
them on the camera screen and press the "DISP"
button (5) to show technical file information. A number
of MB will appear. Within identical series, the picture
(5) showing the highest MB count is the sharpest one.
Keep it and delete the other two identical ones with
lower MB.

Additional technical information
Reviewing pictures
The photographs can be displayed on screen and
zoomed (1) in order to see tissues with more detail.
(1) Options to show the images on a larger screen are to
download the files to a computer with a USB cable
(not supplied), to connect the camera to a TV set
using Canon cable AVC-DC400ST, or to use an
Eye-Fi brand wireless SD memory card to transmit
pictures to a computer or tablet as they are taken.
Check the camera manual for more information.
Downloadable software from Canon detects the
connection to a USB port and automatically down-
loads the pictures to the computer
Resolution and compression (2)
(2) We recommend selecting the larger image sizes, L or
M1, combined with Fine quality compression.
An 8GB card will hold more than 3,000 such images.
Resizing picture for iridology software (3)
(3) The IRISO images produce excellent results in iridol-
ogy programs, although the higher camera resolu-
tions have to be previously downsized. To do so, open
the picture, press "Menu", select "Resize " and
choose M2 (best quality) or S (smallest). This gener-
ates new smaller file appropriate for most software.
Direct printing (4)

The pictures can print directly via USB cable from the
camera to some Canon printers, or other compatible
with PictBridge. Check the camera and your printer
manual.

Maintenance
IRISO Xpert needs very little care to keep up. The
LED’s will last over 10,000 hours (i.e. 120,000 five
minutes photo sessions), the only attentions will be in
changing batteries and cleaning the eyepiece.
Eyepiece preventive care
The rubber eyepiece must be cleaned with alcohol or
a medical desinfectant wipe before or after each use.
At the end of every labored day, it is advised to apply
a siliconized lotion or cream to the rubber eyepiece
and leave it all night. An autopart tire gel or lotion will
work well at sealing and enhancing the rubber, and
will reduce makeup staining. It should be wiped off
with alcohol previous to using.
The rubber eyepiece is user replaceable with care,
contact IRISO for more information.

Troubleshooting
The camera repeatedly fails focusing
- “Macro” mode may not be selected
- zoom out until displaying "1cm - 50cm"
Images do not reach the expected sharpness
- avoid handshake when shooting (use the IRISO
Table Stand)
- have the patient stare at a precise point keeping
both eyes open
- use the self-timer multiple shots technique (p.16)
- refer to all "Advanced Techniques" section (p.16)
Lights reflections surrounded by a halo, picture
looks “milky”
- the front lens is collecting moisture due to cold
weather, cold camera or high humidity in the environ-
ment or coming out of the person’s skin. Proceed
quickly and shortly remove the camera from the face
every so often.
Sclera is too bright showing no detail
- the vertical pair of lights is recommended for sclera
