Automation technology
Automation technology
Due to the growing importance of process automation the area of automation technology is taking on an ever
greater role in industrial operations. This applies both for standard operations in production as well as for
vocational training. Today automation technology almost always involves drive technology, closed-loop control
and computer engineering. Due to the rapid developments in microcontroller and computer technology,
automation has become one of the most innovative and breathtaking of all the areas of electrical engineering
and electronics. Add to that the fact that novel industrial solutions like decentralisation and visualisation require
new vocational training systems. Furthermore, the hitherto sheer multitude of manufacturer-dependent software
products has been replaced by the international standard IEC1131-3. Contemporary programmable logic controls
will now be programmed in accordance with standardised rules. All of these demands mean that there is a need
to have the automation technician of today trained on practice-oriented training systems which convey to the
student both the latest technology but also endow him or her with the required skills and competency.

The objective of PLC training is for the student to acquire practical hands-on skills. The prerequisite for this is
systematic-didactic instruction in both form and content. This allows the necessary knowledge and skills to be
conveyed in a practical, fast, effective and cost-efficient manner. The hands-on oriented experimentation and
training using the process simulators and the process simulations are designed to meet these requirements. As
such these training systems constitute the foundation for teaching not only the fundamentals but also advanced
PLC programming.
The PLC universal system simulator was designed especially for PLC basic training. It is compact and
constructed according to the motto "set up, switch on and train". It is exceptionally well-suited to graphically
demonstrate open-loop and closed-loop industrial applications. By using the masks up to 24 different technical
processes and models can be simulated.

System connector module to extend the basic unit for SIMATIC S7-
300 controls for the simple connection of process models without
having to carry out extensive wiring of the individual lines.
Effecient and didactically sensible training on the highly complex production systems found in industry is only
feasible to some extent in automation technology. Thus training systems must be used which graphically
demonstrate system interdependencies and that can be explored by the student without directly affecting the
production process. PRO/TRAIN for Windows is a training system which allows various automated processes to
be depicted and simulated at a work station for practical hands-on experimentation.
The training system consists of software, hardware and teachware. The software simulates and graphically
depicts typical, technological processes, machines and drives on a PC. The software models are graphically
detailed and realistically depicted both in terms of design as well as operating response. For each model there
is the possibility of performing process analysis in demonstration mode. Malfunctions are realistically simulated
in the process simulations for practical experience and can be initiated randomly or simulated by the user using
the keyboard. Control errors are identified and logged by the software. The switches and pushbuttons needed to
operate the models are already integrated into the respective simulations. The use of real hardware for operation
and monitoring, e.g. an Operator Panel, is easily integratable. The I/O interface connects the PC via the serial
interface using the signal inputs and outputs of a PLC control unit. As such process models with digital
actuators and sensors as well as analog final control elements and signal generators can be connected and
controlled. The actuators incorporated in the model can be controlled directly by the PLC and the switching
states of the signal generators are transmitted to the PLC. The signal level for connection to the PLC has been
selected so that any given industrial-type PLC can be connected to the interface. The input and output signals of
the process are accessible on the interface and can be checked by means of electronic measurement. Each
model package has an in-depth, state-of-the-art online help using browser technology. These contain general
descriptions of the simulation models, control exercises as well as sample PLC programs. The control programs
are generally applicable system function charts documented in accordance with the IEC-1131 standard. The
input and output signals are outlined in the statement lists and IQF reference lists. This guarantees simple
translation into the respective programming language.

"Closed-loop liquid level control" is a practice-oriented experiment set in applied control technology designed
especially for didactic purposes. Due to immediate, visible nature of the controlled variable, i.e. "the level of the
liquid", liquid level control is an extremely graphic experiment and is thus particularly well suited for an
introduction into automatic control technology. The controlled system or liquid level basin is characterised by the
fact that it has a medium response time. Thus experiments can be performed rapidly and the student can
simultaneously monitor how the experiment is proceeding. The experiments focus on determining the most
important parameters of controlled systems with compensation and the set-up and optimisation of control loops
with continuous and discontinuous controllers. The liquid level basin has a plain form on which the foils can be
attached to facilitate the marking of the liquid level as a function of time. The character of the controlled system
can be modified by using various sliding partitions (delays of the 1st and 2nd order). 4 different outlet drains can
be set on the filling basin and the inlet can be set as desired either using an ascending pipe or versus the filling
pressure. Because of its modular design, the training system can, with the corresponding supplements, also be
used for automatic flow-rate control and to explore measuring techniques.

The animated illustration of the models simplifies understanding of how the models respond to programming.
What was previously indicated by means of flashing LEDs or by additional software can now be replaced by a
compact system.
By activating the PLC system’s digital outputs, the models can be manually controlled without difficulty, so that
students can investigate precisely how they function.
The models are shown in animated form on a touch panel and are
controlled via the digital I/O of the PLC system to which they are
connected. As for genuine models, it is possible to receive the

Assignment list
You will start with direct communication via the I/O of a PLC system. A conveyor belt will then be connected to
an AS-i bus to provide an introduction to bus systems in general. The bus system which is most widely used in
industry, PROFIBUS, is dealt with second, while the concluding section is formed by a conveyor belt control
system implemented in PROFINET.
This means that a single system is controlled via four different means of communication.

IMS furniture
The IMS furniture system is used together with the Industrial Mechatronics System. The mobile trolleys can be
used for individual components or sub-systems. In order to build complex, mechatronics systems, the trolleys
can be lined up alongside one another and can be supplemented by frames to accommodate training panels. A
power console allows the trolley to be equipped with a wide variety of 3 HU modules. The trolleys can be
extended by means of various add-ons attachable to the aluminium rails to make up a multi-function PC
experiment trolley.
CID 1 - RFID
Standing for Radio Frequency Identification, RFID involves contactless identification and localization of objects
and permits automatic detection, storage and networking of digital data.
The "RFID" training system is a practical environment for learning how pallets at an automation facility are
identified by means of system function modules. The system can also be used to provide instruction in network
configuration by means of PROFINET.

Today automation technology is becoming more and more tied up with drive technology. Concurrently
programmable logic controls are normally used as the overriding control system. In addition to the possibility of
controlling the drive amplifier via digital and analog inputs and outputs, the use of a fieldbus even provides the
possibility of having the process data and parameters read from or written into the drive amplifier.
