Project Background
These calculations are prepared to evaluate expected settlement due to dewatering required during
construction of Irrigation Reservoir & Pumping Station (IRR).
Purpose of Calculations
1) To calculate settlement due to increased stress due to dewatering.
Calculation of Settlement
Cc H § p 'p ·
S log ¨¨ o ¸¸
1 eo © po ¹
Where: Cc = compression index = 0.06 {values of all Geotechnical Parameters have been assumed}
H = height of consolidating soil layer = 12m
e0 = void ratio of sand = 0.68
p0 = effective stress under initial conditions = (16 x 1.6)+(11 x 4.4) = 74 kN/m2
'p+p0 = effective stress under final condition = [(16 x 4.5)+(11x1.5)] = 88.5 kN/m2
Bulk Unit weight of soil = 16 kN/m3
3
Submerged Unit Weight of soil = 11 kN/m
Conclusion :
1) It is concluded that at the maximum anticipated settlement expected at the point of dewatering will be
33mm.
2) Nearest existing road is 35m away; which is beyond radius of influence, hence the anticipated settlement
for the existing road due to dewatering for the Irrigation Reservoir & Pumping Station would be minimal,
i.e. less than 5mm.
