Diary

Day 1
My aim for today is to begin creating the DVD menu. Before I begin I will set up an ILP, a
sources document, a diary, a checklist, a budget, a client liaison sheet, a legal and ethical
report, and an evaluation. I will need to make sure that I set up the right stage size before I
begin creating the splash page for the DVD menu. Before I import my images, I will edit the
logo on the software Photoshop and I will re-design my ‘Music Menu’ button and the ‘About
the Band’ button.

I created my logo on Photoshop by importing an image and

painting certain parts of it red. I used the lasso tool to go around
the edges before I painted the parts red, this helped to make
sure that that I did not paint anything else red.

I re-designed the ‘About the Band’ button on Photoshop. I

got a blank layout of a newspaper layout off the internet
and used the clone stamp tool to erase the title at the top
of the image. I then used the font, Old English Text MT, to
replace the newspaper title. I changed it to the title of one
of the band’s albums (News of the World). I changed the font again to Trajan
Pro 3, and I add the name of the button, ‘About the Band’.

I re-designed the ‘Music Menu’ button on the software

Photoshop. Imported an image off the internet of one of
Queen’s golden albums. I set up a new window where the
background was transparent. Then I used the crop tool to edit the image
down to a smaller size. After which I used the elliptical
marque tool to outline the album and move it on to the
transparent background. Once the album was on the
transparent background I use the font, Trajan Pro 3, to
create the title. I created the words separately because I
needed to arc the words so that they would fit around the
album.
I also edited the robot on
Photoshop and put it on
to a transparent
background so that when
I import it onto Director I
can put it into the corner
of the contents page. I
used the magnetic lasso
tool to go arounds the
edge before I pressed control and moved the image
onto the transparent background.

On Photoshop, I also edited the Hot Space album cover. I

needed to separate all the squares so that I could have them
ready for the band’s information page. For the pictures
featuring Freddie Murcury and John Deacon, I had to use the
clone stamp tool to remove the albums name from the
images.

I changed my stage size to the client’s requirements, which was 1024 x

768.

I then imported the images and buttons onto the cast menu by selecting
File and then Import. I selected the images that I wanted to use for the
DVD menu.

Today I have learnt how to create a transparent backgound on

Photoshop, and how to use the clone stamp to erase things. On
Director I learnt how to change the stage size and how to import
pictures.
Day 2
My aim for today is to begin putting together tha DVD menu, I want to have completed the
splash page and have put in two working buttons that close the DVD menu and lead to the
contence page.

For the background I

used an image that I
had found on the
internet. I dragged
the image on toi the
stage and then
expanded the image
so that it filled the
shole of the stage.
I then extended the
Sprite length to
Frame 100. This is so that the image remains as the
background throughout the DVD menu. As I finish the
DVD menu I will change the legth of the sprite length
because the DVD menu may be longer or shorter than
100 frames.

I dragged and droped the

redesigned logo on to the stage
and made the size of the image
larger. I repositioned the image
so that it was near the top of
the stage but also so that it is
central on the stage. I extened
the sprite length to Frame 35.

I needed to create the text that

goes at the bottom of the logo. I
used Photoshop to do this. I
imported an image of
the logo and then
opened up a new page
which had a
transparent
background.
I then used the magic
wand tool to outline the
letters of the logo so
that I could then cut
and move the letters
onto a transparent
background.

Then I needed to
change the colour of the
letters so I used the
magic wand tool to ouline the letters again but on the
transparent background. I then used the paint brush
tool to paint over the original colour so that the new colour was
red. To make sure that the image is saved with a
transparent background, I will save it as a PNG. I
then imported the image into the software Director
where it was added to the cast list.

I then dragged and dropped the image

from the cast list onto the stage. I
enlarged the image and repositioned it so
that it was in the centre below the logo. I
also extended the sprite length to Frame
35.

After this, I dragged and dropped the

‘open’ button and ‘close’ button onto the
stage from the cast list. I extended the
sprite length of the button to Frame 35.
I then went back onto Photoshop because I needed to
create new versions of all the buttons. On the DVD menu, I
want to put rollover buttons on all the navigation buttons
so that when the curser is hovered over the button it ‘rolls
over’ to a paler version of the button. So, with all the
navigation buttons I am opening them up on Photoshop
and changing the opacity from 100% to 70%. This makes the
button look paler.

However, for some of the buttons I need to change the

opacity to 50%. This is because the button may be
monochrome or because there is not much distinction
between the shades of the colours on the button. This then
means that I need to lower the opacity more than 95%.

When changing the opacity of the buttons that lead to

the music videos, I will change the opacity to 65%. This
is because the background of the button has different
colours and shading to the other buttons. This then means that the
opacity level that was used on the other buttons will not have the same
effect, so I will need to change the opacity to a different level for the
buttons that lead to the music videos.

Today, I have learnt that to save an image so that it has a transparent background I need to
save it as a PNG. This means that I need to go back and re-save some of my buttons as PNGs
so that they will have a transparent background. I also learnt that changing the opacity of an
image you can make it paler and more transparent.

DAY 3
My aim for today is to have every page of the DVD menu laided out, ready for the buttons
and rollovers to be added. If I have time I want to add in some of the roll overs on the
buttons. I also need to have a client liason meeting as well as add to
my evidence check list.
I have finished the layout of the splash page and I am now moving
on to the layout of the contents page. I shortedned the frame
length for the sprites on splash page to 30 Frames each (except for
the background). I started the contence page on Frame 35 and put
the first image into Channel 6.
I dragged and dropped
the image of the robot
into the corner and
extended the sprite
length so that it went up
to Frame 65. I then
dragged and dropped
the buttons for the
music menu, the about
the band page, and the
back button. All their
sprite lengths were
wxtened to Frame 65. I enlarged the music menu button and the about the band button ao
that they were the same distance from the sides of the stage.

The next page that I

went on to lay out
was the music
contents page. I
started the sprites
at Frame 70. I then
dragged and
dropped the song
titles onto the stage
and enlarged them.

I then change the sizes of the song titles and lined them up with each other so that the
layout of the screen was neater and more organised.
I then added the album covers next to the song titles. I placed them roughly in place at first
and then adjusted their sizes and positions so that they looked neater and so that they were
next to the right song title.

I next went on to do the layout of the ‘About the Band’ page. I added in the images of the
band members from the Hot Space album cover and then arranged them so that they were
at the bottom of the screen. I started this page at Frame 105 and the page will end at Frame
135.

I then added a text box by clicking on the text tool and

then clicking on the area that I want the text to be. For
now, I will add a small generic bit of text about the band
which I will later change to proper information about the
band.
At this point I decided to shrink the pictures in the
lower left hand corner this was so that I could fit in
the ‘back’ button. I also change the sprite name of
the text in the cast list.

I went on to Photoshop to
create the music navigation
buttons. I got an image off the internet of
basic music navigation icons, however I will
create the actual button on Photoshop. I
used the magic wand tool to select the
button. I then pressed Ctrl on the key pad and
moved the music navigation icon to the blank
screen (which has been set up so that the
background is transparent). I then cropped down
the image before I saved it.

I re-opened Photoshop and created a new layer that has a

transparent background. I then used the elliptical marquee tool
to select an area of the page to be the button.
I the selected the gradient tool and drew a line from the bottom corner of the circle to the
top corner of the screen. Colour was then added into the circle

I then right clicked on

the layer and selected
Blending Option.

I then added an ‘Inner Shadow’ which

made the edge of the button darker. I
opened the image of the play icon and
used the magic wand tool to select the
icon and move it over to the red button.
I then clicked on edit, then free
transform and pressed the shift button
on the key pad to enlarge the icon.
I saved the button as a PNG and then
re-used the red circle for the rest of
the music navigation buttons. This
keeps the buttons consistent in look.

Today I have learnt how to add text box on Director and how to use the grid as a way of
making sure that all the buttons and pictures are the same size and line up properly. I also
learnt how to use the gradient tool in Photoshop to create buttons.
Day 4
My aim for today is to fully complete the layout of the DVD menu and to and to add in all
the rollovers. I also want to add in animations on the album covers on the music contents
page. I will also add to my evidence check list as I start to make the navigation buttons work.

I began the first music video page, which is Bohemian

Rhapsody. I started this on Frame 140 in Chanel 26.
However, when I tried to drag and drop my music
videos onto the stage and the script, they would not
work. So, I have had to go back onto Premier to re-
save the music videos.

I had to then import the videos

again. I then dragged and dropped
the Bohemian Rhapsody music video
into the script and on to the stage.
I had to extend the sprite length to
Frame 1075. This means that each
music video will need a sprite length
of 935 Frames.
After that, I dragged and dropped
the music navigation buttons on
to the stage and adjusted their
size.

I added the back button and the image of the song

title. I also extended all the sprite lengths of all the
features on that page to Frame 1075.

I then went on to do the music video page for the song We

Are The Champions. I started on Frame 1080 and extended
all the sprite lengths on that page to Frame 2015.
I went on to do the music video page for the song Innuendo. I started on
Frame 2020 and extended all the sprite lengths to Frame 2955.

I then went on to do the music video page for the song

Don’t Stop Me Now. I started on Frame 2960 and
extended all the sprite lengths to Frame 3895.
I then went on to do the music video page for the song
We Will Rock You. I started on Frame 3900 and then
extended all the sprite lengths to Frame 4835.

I clicked on the panel above Frame 30 and opened a

Script Panel. I typed in ‘go to the Frame’ and then
closed the Script Panel.
I then clicked on the ‘OPEN’
button and then went to the
‘Code: Library’ and selected
‘Behaviours’.

I then selected ‘Navigation’. Then I selected ‘Play Frame X’ and dragged

and dropped it on to the ‘OPEN’ button. In the box, I typed in Frame 35.
This should now direct the user to Frame 35, which is the start of the
contents page. I will do the same process on all the buttons.
Whilst I was adding the navigation in I noticed that the music contents page did not have a
back button. So, I had to move the songs up so that I could include a back button.

I had to put the back button in Chanel 66.

Today I have learnt how to make navigation buttons

work and how to input videos on to the DVD menu.

Day 5
My aim for today is to finish making the navigation buttons work on the DVD menu. I then
want to make the buttons that control the music work as well. I also want to add in rollovers
on all the buttons. I want to add in the text on the band’s information page. Finally, I will
publish the DVD menu. I will provide evidence for some of these aims on the evidence check
list.
I finished making the navigation buttons
work. My cast list now looks like this:
I played the DVD menu through to make
sure I had put navigation on all the
buttons and that they all took me to the
right pages. When I was sure that they
all worked, I started to put navigations
on the buttons that controlled the music videos.
I went to the first music page (Bohemian Rhapsody) and then went
to the Library and clicked on ‘Behaviours’. I then selected ‘Media’.
Then I selected ‘Quick Time’ and then ‘Quick Time Control Button’.
When I had found the ‘Quick Time Control
Button’, I dragged and dropped it onto the
pause button on the stage. In the dialogue box,
I set the ‘Video button action’ to ‘Stop’.

I did this for all the buttons.

I needed to stop the video playing before the user can press play. So, in ‘Property
Inspector’, I selected the heading ‘Quick Time’. I then clicked on the box which said
‘Pause’ next to it. I then played the DVD menu through to check that the video didn’t
play before the paly button was pressed and to check that all the buttons controlling
the music worked.
I then went to all the other music videos and did the same process.

Next, I went on to do the rollovers on all the navigation

buttons. I firstly selected the image that I wanted to put
the rollover on. I then went to the library and selected
‘Behaviours’. I then selected ‘Animation’ and then
‘Interactive’.
I found the ‘Rollover Member Change’ and then dragged and dropped it on to the
image that I wanted the rollover on. I then selected the image I wanted from the
options and clicked OK.

I then played the DVD menu through to make sure that this had worked. When I
was sure that it had worked, I did the same process on all the button so that they all
had rollovers on them.

Whilst I was inputting the rollovers, I tried to put a rollover onto the buttons that control the
music. But when I tried to play the music it did not work and the video started to pixelate.
So, I decided to not put rollovers on the buttons controlling the music videos.

I then went on to do an animation. I wanted

the album covers on the music contents page
to slide onto the screen. So, I made the stage
bigger so that I would have space to set where
the album covers start to slide from.
I then
clicked on
the first
album cover
and moved
it off the
stage. In the
middle of
the selected
album cover there is a cluster of
small circles. I clicked on the circles
and dragged them to the place where I want the
album cover to finish at. I played the DVD menu
through to check that the album cover did slide onto
the screen. When I was sure that it worked I did the same process on all
the album covers on that page.
I realised that I had forgotten to put rollovers on to the images of the band members on the
band’s information page. So I went and found the ‘Rollover Member Change’ in the Library
and dragged and dropped it onto the images.

I then needed to change the text. So, I went

on to the internet to find a website that
would tell me information about the band. I
then typed it up on Word so that all the
spelling could be checked before I copied and
pasted it on to Director.

I then needed to turn it in to a

scrollong text box. So I went to
‘Property Inspector’ and then
clicked on the tab called ‘Text’. I
then went to ‘Framing’ and then
changed it ‘Scrolling’. I adjusted the text box and then I change
the font to Source Sans Pro.
I needed to make the close button work. So, I opened a
Script Panel and typed ‘on mouse Up me quit end’. This
made the DVD menu close when the ‘CLOSE’ button was
pressed.

The last thing that I needed to do was to publish the DVD

menu. So, I clicked on File and selected Publish Settings. I
ticked the boxes ‘Window Projector’ and ‘HTML’. I
then pressed publish.

Today I learned how to learned how to make

buttons controlling music videos work, how to
create animations, how to add in scrolling text boxes, and how to publish the DVD menu.

Day 6 – Up Dating
My aim for today is to find another version of the Queen logo and add red tints to it. I also
want to find another version of the lettering for the logo.

I needed to find another logo that had a better quality so that it looked good when it was
larger. So, I
went on to the
internet and
found a new
logo.
I saved it and opened it up on the software Photoshop.

I then used the magnetic lasso tool to outline the

area of the logo that I wanted to make red. BY
doing this I could be more accurate in where the
colour was applied.
I then did the same process, however I used a darker shade of red to get different
shading on the logo. I then used the soft round mixer brush tool to blend the two tones
together.
I then applied (free hand) a much darker shade of red on the logo so that there was a bigger
difference in the tones. Again, I used the mixer brush tool to blend the colours together.
I also used the smudge tool to make the
blending neater and smoother.

I then saved the edited version of the

Queen logo as a JPEG.

I then went back on to the internet to

find another version of the lettering in
the Queen logo. I saved the image and
then opened it up onto Photoshop.
I opened another page
that had a transparent
background.

I then used the magic wand tool to select the lettering.

By pressing the Ctrl key, I could
then cut and mover the lettering
over to the window with the transparent background.

I used the crop tool to get rid of the

extra parts of the page. I then saved the edited logo as a PNG so that when it is imported on
to the DVD menu, it has a transparent background.
I have learnt how to blend colours using the mixer brush tool and the smudge tool.
Day 7 – Up Dating
My aim for today is to import the new logos on to the splash page and adjust the buttons
on the music video pages. I will re-do the button for the music contents page. I will also try
to re-include the rollovers on the images of the band members on the band’s information
page. I also aim to re-publish the new DVD menu.
I firstly imported the new logo images.
After this I deleted the old band logos that
were still on the stage.

I then applied the grid and dragged and dropped the new images on to the stage, then I
rearranged them so that they were central.
I then went on to
Photoshop and opened the
image of the golden
record. I then created a
new layer that had a
transparent background. I
used the elliptical marquee
tool to select the golden
record and then I pressed
the Ctrl key to cut and
move the golden record
over to the window with
the transparent
background. I
then used the
crop tool to get
rid of the rest of
the background.

I now wanted to
add in text to the
golden record. So,
I created a text
box and typed the ‘Music’ in to
it. I made sure that the font was
‘Trajan Pro 3’.

I used the ‘Create Wrapped Text’ button

to open up a dialogue box. I changed the
style to ‘Arc’ and then changed the bend
to +83%.
I then did the same process
for the word ‘Menu’,
however, when I wrapped the
text I changed the bend to -
83%. I saved the image as a
PNG. I then re-opened the
image and lowered the
opacity to 50%. This was for
the rollover on the button. I
‘Saved As’ the images as a
PNG.

I then imported the images in

to the cast list on Director and
deleted the old version of the button off the stage.

I dragged and
dropped the new
button on to the stage and extended its sprite length. I now needed to add in the
rollover on it. So, I went to the ‘Library’ and went to ‘Behaviours’, then ‘Animation’,
then ‘Interactive’, and finally I selected the option of ‘Rollover Member Change’. I
dragged and dropped this over the ‘Music Menu’ button.

I checked that it worked and then made the ‘Music Menu’ button work. I went to the
‘Library’ and clicked on ‘Behaviours’, then ‘Navigation’, and then I selected the option of
‘Play Frame X’. I dragged and dropped this over the button and then typed on the Frame
that I wanted it to take the user to. I checked that it worked and
then saved it.
I next went on to apply the rollovers on the band member’s images on the ‘About the Band’
page. I went to the ‘Library’ and clicked on ‘Behaviours’, then ‘Animation’, then
‘Interactive’, and finally I selected the option of ‘Rollover Member Change’. I dragged and
dropped this over the first image of the band members.

I selected the new image and clicked ‘OK’. I did the same prosses on all band member’s
images. I checked that it had worked and then saved it.

When running the DVD menu through I noticed that the ‘About the Band’ button changed
its position when it ‘rolled over’. So, I went on to Photoshop to re-do the button.
On Photoshop, once the image of the newspaper was up, I created a new page which had a
transparent background.

I then used the rectangular

marquee tool to select, cut out, and move the newspaper. I then needed to erase
the text at the top of the newspaper so that I could replace it. I used the clone
stamp tool to erase the text.
I used the text tool to add in
the words ‘News of the
World’. The font is ‘Old
English’.

I then changed the font to ‘Trajan Pro 3’ and then created

another text box and typed the name of the button: ‘About the Band’.
I then saved this image as a PNG. Whilst the image was still on
Photoshop, I lowered the opacity to 50% and then clicked ‘Save
As’ and saved the image, again, as a PNG. The image that had
the opacity changed will be used as the rollover button.

I imported the images on to the cast list and then deleted the
old versions of the button off the stage.

I then needed to re-apply the rollover on the button. So, I went to the ‘Library’, I clicked on
‘Behaviours’, then‘Animation’, then ‘Interactive’, and then finally selected the option
‘Rollover Member Change’. I dragged and dropped the option over the button and then
selected the image that I wanted.

I then needed to make it work as a button again. So, I went to the ‘Library’ and clicked on
‘Behaviours’, then ‘Navigation, I then selected the option of ‘Play Frame X’. I dragged and
dropped this option on to the button and typed in the Frame that I wanted the button to
take the user to.

I ran the DVD menu through to check everything and then saved it.
The last thing that I needed to do was to change the positioning of the buttons that control
the music on the music video pages. I expanded the page from 50% to 100%. This was so
that I could be more accurate with adjusting the buttons.
The last thing that I needed to do was re-publish the DVD menu. I ran through the DVD
menu one last time to check things.
I clicked on ‘File’ and then ‘Publish Settings’.
I made sure that ‘Windows Projector’ and ‘HTML’ was ticked. I then clicked
‘Publish’.

I have confirmed how to add rollovers, make buttons work and how to publish the final
product.
