Computations:
For Soil Properties Before and After Test

Mass of soil/specimen (Ms)= M soil+plate – Mring= 176.74g – 68.7g = 108.4 g

Mass of dried soil (Md)= 91.57g
Mass of water (Mw)= Ms-Md= 108.4g – 91.57g= 16.47g
Moisture Content (MC) = ( Mw/ Md )* 100 = (16.47/91.57)*100= 17.986%
Density (ρd) = Md / volume= 91.57g/ [(π/4)(6cm)2(2.5cm)] = 1.30g/cc
Density (ρ) = Md / volume= 91.57g/ [(π/4)(6cm)2(2.5cm)] = 1.30g/cc
Volume, V = (π/4)(D2)(h)= (π/4)(0.060m)2(0.025) = 7.06858x 10-5 m3
Volume of soil, Vs= Md/Gs ρw= 0.09157/(2.65)(1000) = 3.45547x10-5m3
Volume of Voids, Vv= V-Vs= 7.06858x 10-5 m3 - 3.45547x10-5= 3.6311x10-5m3
Void ratio, e = Vv/ Vs= 3.6311x10-5m3 / 3.45547x10-5m3= 1.046
Porosity, n = 1/(1+e)=1/(1+1.046)= 0.488

For the result based on the reading in the apparatus

>>>Loads
Note: In the apparatus scale used was 1:10 therefore the loads (kgs) need to multiply by 100.
Then, convert the kgs units to Newton (1kg=9.81 N) to make it the Normal Force
Test 1 = 5kgs x 100 = 50kgs x 9.81= 490.5N
Test 2 = 10kgs x 100 = 100kgs x 9.81= 981N
Test 3 = 15kgs x 100 = 150kgs x 9.81= 1471.5N
Test 4 = 20kgs x 100 = 200kgs x 9.81=1962N

Then, used the converted units to get the value of the Normal Stress using the Area of the
ring=2827.43mm2

Test 1 = σ= (490.5N / 2827.43mm2)(1000) = 490.5kPa

Test 2 = σ= (981N / 2827.43mm2) (1000)= 981kPa
Test 3 = σ= (1471.5N / 2827.43mm2) (1000)= 1471.5kPa
Test 4 = σ= (1962N / 2827.43mm2 ) (1000)= 1962kPa

>>>Shear Force
Note: In the reading on the shear force the unit used was kgf, therefore convert it to Newton
(1kgf=9.81 N), then used it for the value of Shear stress using the Area of the ring=2827.43mm2

Test 1 = σ= 23.8 kgf x 9.81 N=(233.48N / 2827.43mm2)(1000) = 82.58kPa

Test 2 = σ= 35.2 kgf x 9.81 N=(345.31N / 2827.43mm2)(1000) = 122.13kPa
Test 3 = σ= 69.1 kgf x 9.81 N=(677.87N / 2827.43mm2)(1000) = 239.75kPa
Test 4 = σ= 74.6 kgf x 9.81 N=(731.83N / 2827.43mm2)(1000) = 258.83kPa

In the Graph: Normal stress vs Shear Stress

Cohesion, c= 25.508 kPa

Angle of internal Friction: Using the result of Test 4 and the y-intercept
tan (ϕ)= 258.831-25.508/ 693.916= 18.58o
