ANALYSIS OF A SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM

USING

STAAD PRO

NWOSU AUGUSTINE

April 2015
Module 1 Analysis of a simply supported beam
2015

This training manual is intended for beginners, this exercise will work the trainee through the
basic features of STAAD Pro: Modeling, Loading, Assigning supports, Analysis and Post processing.

A verification exercise is done at the end of the analysis using STAAD Pro. to compare the result
with a traditional manual calculation

At the end of this module the trainee would have basic knowledge of

 Modeling of simple beam.

 Loading of uniformly distributed beam.
 Assigning different types of support.
 Interpreting the result from the analysis.

VERIFICATION OF STAAD RESULT

1. MAXIMUM BENDING MOMENT.

M=wl2/8
Self weight of beam per meter= 0.45x0.23x23.5616=2.438kN/m
Total moment =(( 2.438x52)/8 )1.4 +( (5x52)/8)1.6 = 35.668kN.m

Compare with STAAD result.

2. SHEAR FORCE.
Total self weight =(2.438x5)1.4 = 17.066kN
Total live load = (5x5)1.6 = 40kN
Total load = 17.066+40 = 57.066kN
Load at each support = 57.066/2 = 28.533kN.

Compare with STAAD result.

ASSIGNMENT.

Analyze the member in STAAD Pro and extract the following from the Analysis.

1) Maximum bending moment = …………kN.m

2) Support reaction = ………..kN

3) Draw the bending moment diagram ignoring the Self Weight of the member.
