PURPOSE
The purpose of the assignment is to compare the theory of project management with
the practise of project management.

BACKGROUND
The manner in which project management is portrayed in theory (structured and
taught in the academic fraternity) does not always align with its practise (the way it is
done in the industry). These gaps and common areas need to be identified in order
to develop a complimentary relationship between the two.

THE ASSIGNMENT
In this assignment, you are required to identify a project of your choice (ONE THAT
YOU RECENTLY WORKED ON OR KNOW OF) and draw up a feasibility report and
a Project Charter and report. With reference to that project, come up with the
following:
A. Describe its nature, magnitude, expected duration, and other projects within
its PORTFOLIO. Specify non-financial project selection models that were
used in prioritising that specific project. Compare its rating compare with other
projects in the PORTFOLIO. Identify disparities between theory and practise
of project selection.

B. Produce the project`s work breakdown structure (WBS), showing all levels.
Highlight and comment on the differences a theoretical WBS and a WBS in
practice.
C. Draw the project`s Precedence Table and Project Network Diagram and
identify the project`s critical path(s). Establish the various relationships
between the activities. Draw examples from the diagram.
D. Draw up its Gantt Chart. To what extent doe the Gant Chart differ or resemble
the one proposed in theory?
