Intravenous Therapy

Procedure performed in a medical section

Intravenous infusion for antibiotic therapy

This is a type of treatment that involves delivering liquid substances into the vein. Use of

syringe at higher pressures can be preferred as the most suitable intravenous route for the

administration of the injection. Use of pressure supplied by gravity (infusions) may also provide

effective administration for the injection of the liquid into the vein. This therapy is used for fluid

replacement as it termed as the fastest means to deliver medications as well as fluid replacement

throughout the body. This therapy may also be used to correct electrolyte imbalances as well as

blood transfusions (Arvikar, S.L. 2015).

Details needed to determine to determine the CPT code needed

Determine the initial code, there are certain details the coder should consider the following

especially in the case a patient suffering from Lyme disease:

 Procedure to be performed is injection of penicillin and ceftriaxone into the vein of the

left hand.
 The organ where the procedure will take place which is the left hand.
 Patient’s condition- acute dissemination, facial palsy
 Synonyms of the procedure to be performed- injection of penicillin and ceftriaxone,

single vein, left hand.

 Abbreviations of the procedure

Diagnosis / treatment of neurologic Lyme disease

Intravenous Therapy

Physicians can prefer to use intravenous antibiotic therapy to diagnose as well as treat

patients suffering from Lyme disease. There are two common test for diagnosis of Lyme diseases

such as Enzyme immunoassay and immunoblot test. Intravenous antibiotic therapy should be

applied especially when the signs and symptoms of the disease have been supported by a positive

serologic, cerebrospinal fluid titer by immunofluorescence assay etc. (Halperin, J.J. 2015). The

physician should identify the signs and symptoms that are associated with Lyme disease. For

example, if the following signs and symptoms are reported, then the doctor is required to use

intravenous infusion therapy to treat the patients who have expressed neurological forms of the

Lyme illness. The doctor will treat such patient with antibiotics like penicillin and ceftriaxone:

Painful radiculoneuritis, Atrioventricular nodal block, Facial palsy, Erythema migrans, Acute

dissemination, Lymphocytic meningitis etc.

The doctor is supposed to inject the two drugs intravenously into the vein over a period of

30 to 60 minutes. The physician may also prefer to give penicillin directly to the lining of the

chest cavity, joints as well as on the surrounding of the spinal cord.

The accurate CPT code and the necessary modifier

The physician will have to report a CPT code of 96365- (injection of penicillin, ceftriaxone).

Application of a modifier to the procedure

The doctor performs the procedure on the vein so the modifier, in this case, is the vein. So the

complete CPT of the procedure to be reported by the physician should be 96365-single vein

(injection of penicillin and ceftriaxone; single vein).
