Burlington School Board statement of April 1, 2018.

BOARD STATEMENT:
The Board had the equivalent of a restorative practices session that was much needed.
We affirmed our commitment to equity and inclusion. We recommend that the new
Board invest in implicit bias training that is managed by the Superintendent, with a
trainer chosen by the Superintendent.

A core principle of restorative practices is that the party who perceives harm has the
opportunity to participate. We therefore recommend that a restorative practices session
be held with Superintendent Obeng with his input on the formation of the group that will
take part.

We held this meeting to fulfill our responsibility to review a report on an investigation of

racial bias that we commissioned. We as a Board also needed the opportunity to talk
together and to bring closure to the investigation and that was the goal of this meeting.
We affirm that the Board has the responsibility to monitor itself, in particular when there
may be discrimination towards its employee.
