CW 03 - Measuring Practice and Chemical Changes

1) Determine the density of the liquid that fills the beaker by following the steps below.
(Remember to show sig figs).

Mass of the empty beaker: 41.20 grams (g)

Mass of the filled beaker (on scale): 177.0 grams (g)

Mass of just the liquid: 135.80 grams (g)

Volume of the liquid (in graduated 60.7 milliliters (mL)

cylinder):

Density of the liquid: 2.53 (g / mL)

2) Watch the Chemical Changes: Crash Course Kids #19.2 video. What are the clues that help
us know when a process is a chemical change?
- Smells, color, taking heat, giving heat, light.

3) What are the clues that help us know when a process is a physical change?
- Color change, bent items.

4) Watch the Chemistry is Awesome! Ultimate Compilation of Best Experiments video. List the
names of processes below. Label the ones that you think are chemical changes and what
evidence shows this.
- Egyptian night experiment.
- Hot water, and dry ice
- Fluorite with UV light.

Name of process Type of change Evidence

Chemical clock Chemical Something reacts to change

to black

Fluorescein in UV light Physical Showed color

Barking dog chemical Light, and steam

Burning of trimethyl borate Chemical Heat, light, and gas

Sodium explodes in water Chemical Explosion

Golden rain Physical Glitter in water

Acetone flashlight Physical light

Egyptian night Chemical black/reaction

Burning of nitrocellulose Chemical Fireplosion, light.

3 layer liquid physical Non mix, but color

Bubbles with dry ice physical bubbles

Traffic light chemical Reaction to mixing

Dry ice and hot water physical Steam, no chsnge in color

5) Play with the Build an Atom simulation from the PHET website. Click on the Atom option
after the simulation loads up. What type of particle needs to be added for an atom to change
from one type of element to another?

Protons, and neutrons, increased, or decreased changed the element. Sometimes

making them unstable, or stable.
