VERIFICATION

AND VALIDATION
OF MUSCLE
SENSING DEVICE
GROUP 12: KIMBERLY CROWLEY, SASHA SOBOLEV, MARIA WANNER
Project Update

The primary goal of this project remains to be

creating a device to predict and monitor muscle
spasms in patients experiencing PLMD and RLS.
Project Update

Two EMG muscle sensors

will be used
Vastus lateralis
and gastrocnemius muscle

Verification Plan

A verification plan was

constructed based on the
technical specifications
outlined in the progress
report.
Verification Plan
Specification: Safety

Battery heat test

Radiated heat must be less than 25° C
Heat test with thermometer connected
to a data viewing program

Material
Cannot cause pressure
sores or irritated skin
Verification Plan
Specification: Power

The battery must be able to

last at least 10 hours
An ammeter will be used
Verification Plan
Specification: Durability

The device must be able to withstand

nightly tossing and turning.

Verification Plan
Specification: Software and Data Transfer

EMG data - 500 Hz

Accelerometer - 50Hz
Transfer rate of 2,300 bytes/s
Verification Plan
Specification: Detection and Prediction

Detection Prediction
75% of all contractions Algorithm created
Test on group member based on training data
Predict 50%
Verification Plan
Specification: Size and Portability

< 3 lbs
< 154 cubic cm
Entire device should fit in a
small backpack or purse
Verification Plan
Specification: Usability and
Comfort

Instructions created
Participant should learn how to
use the device in under 30 min.
Client will wear the final device to
evaluate its comfort
Validation Plan

Three Primary Needs

1. Detect spasms
2. Analyze data
3. Predict large contractions

Final device will be worn by the client for

several successive nights to determine if
meets these 3 primary needs.
